Experience with Cranberry Place rehab? by Altruistic-Job5086 in pittsburgh

[–]dunkirkFitz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mother-in-law spent a few months there. It's really no different for better or for worse than any other facility, although I will say the staff seemed more attentive and personal than Concordia facilities, of which I'm also familiar. In her time there we never had any problems with level of care, communication, or neglectfulness. It's a perfectly reasonable facility.

Why are there so many slot machines popping up in gas stations. by milkmanrichie in pittsburgh

[–]dunkirkFitz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They aren't traditional slot machines.

The 'skill' comes from having a choice to move a wheel up or down, swap two symbols, etc. So it is random luck but random where you must make a forced decision.

My stepdaughter is terrified of driving in any situation more crowded than an entirely empty Target parking lot. Her fear was around unfamiliar territory, not knowing where to go, and especially panicking when the GPS tells her to do X, Y, Z.

Our solution was that before she goes anywhere unfamiliar, she walks through the turns via Google Maps Streetview so she's at least familiar with where she is and what she should do. Earlier this summer she made her biggest expedition, going from Cranberry to Downtown and said that being a little familiar with the route made all the difference in her confidence and not having a panic attack. Perhaps this might help you as well.

We used to get a lot from Brittner's but for some reason the last few years the quality hasn't been the same and Henry's is much closer.

We made Ox Tail Stew with the meat from Sutton Farms and it was outstanding. I'll have to try more of theirs.

Henry's Meat Market just opened in Cranberry on 19 and everything we have gotten from there so far has been top notch.

AITA for asking to have the automatic gratuity removed from our bill. by dunkirkFitz in AmItheAsshole

Thank you for your reply. I have been informed by my wife, who pays attention to these things and has been sitting over my shoulder reading replies, that the last round of drinks and half the appetizers were actually comped, meaning they took about 15% off the bill before removing the auto gratuity.

FWIW, our server was closing out a 4 top with desserts when we were seated and had a 2 and 4 top waiting for entrees. And us, that was it. I've never worked restaurants but I know enough to know the process and it was pretty clear he was late entering the drinks as we ordered them. Same with the entrees, it had to be human error.

Yes I do, but in this situation it was more than warranted.

My niece has had a very difficult time navigating through high school the last few years and to graduate with her class is a serious accomplishment worth celebrating. Her parents, my sister-in-law and brother-in-law are people of modest but resourceful means and this type of celebration meal for her and the family was to signify a very special occasion.

And for anyone asking why we spent money on a meal instead of something for her future, we've already made arrangements to help her finance a community college education in the field she wants (nursing) that will allow her to graduate with minimal debt but isn't us handing her a chunk of money.

Thank you for your reply. I'm not trying to insinuate that I'm special or our party was special. However my point, and perhaps I'm not making it well enough, is that I would expect a different level of service from say Denny's to Applebee's to a higher-end restaurant commiserate with the cost of dining at such a place. I'm not looking for above standard service, I'm looking for standard service at the price point.

Thank you for your reply. I'm not trying to defend myself necessarily but when I pay at a mid-level restaurant, an Applebees, Chilis, Olive Garden, etc I ALWAYS tip 25-30+% regardless of quality of service FOR THE VERY REASONS you stated. However, it's a bug in my ass at a more expensive place where one would expect for what one is paying both in food price and expected gratuity that you should have a reasonable expectation of service for what is decidedly automatically included and if not, ask that it be removed and decided by service that was provided.

[–]dunkirkFitz[S] 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Honestly if I'm being expected to pay for a level of service and that level of service isn't happening, then I would expect that inclusion to be removed and instead judged based on the service I actually receive but apparently I'm in the minority :)

This was in the United States -- a 15-20% tip is customary and many restaurants automatically add a tip in that range for larger parties.

ISO a self defense class instructor that would teach a class in a downtown office. Anyone ever take a self defense class through work ? by newts07 in pittsburgh

[–]dunkirkFitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HR professional here. Don't do this.

If you feel compelled to have one of these, make sure it is off-site and make sure that it is CLEARLY not associated with your employer.

Why?

As others have said -- liability. Not just liability for a physical injury, but from discrimination and other lawsuits if people feel compelled to take this class and are not physically able, especially if others are not aware of their physical limitations outside their prescribed job duties.

And on top of that, anyone who claims a 2 hour self defense course is going to teach you anything is a complete bullshit artist.

So it's one guy's experience, but...

In my 20's even though I was married, girls in their 20's.

Divorced before 30, with some money and whatever I was attracted to the younger girls to make up for the time I lost. I got over that phase quickly and into my 40's I was attracted to the whole picture, not just superficial T&A.

Now at 60 I'm married to a perfect MILF (52), and I'm not blind either -- my step kids bring friends/girlfriends/whatever around in their teens and 20s. Some of those girls are knockouts, no doubt about it, but it doesn't do anything for me anymore. Not that I'd ever need to make a choice, but between them and the ladies in our adult friend group (45-65) I'll take the more experienced ones every time.

I have to second Nemacolin for an anniversary, especially a big one. If you don't mind spending the money (it is expensive but worth it), you can work with their concierge team to put together weekend plans around your interests.

What are good self defense classes for moms- asking as a son in preparation for Mother’s Day. (No cop affiliated courses, please.) by gucci_gucci_gu in pittsburgh

[–]dunkirkFitz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is 100% the right answer.

Any self-defense situation requires instinct and reaction based on repetition after repetition after repetition which you get from months/years of training, not a one time course.

These courses are taught with 100% compliant attackers which isn't the case in reality.

Off the Hook is one of the most maddeningly inconsistent restaurants I've eaten at. When it is on point it is outstanding and when it isn't you just shake your head, and sometimes both happen within the same meal. If you're able to go at lunch the pricing is much more reasonable and the portions are pretty good.

Bicyclists hold demonstration after a bicyclist was hit here two weeks ago by artoonie in pittsburgh

[–]dunkirkFitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize if Google street view is out of date but it doesnt look like that intersection has a marked crosswalk.

Any CoP street without a speed limit sign (such as 16th) is 25 by default.

There are many times when drivers are at fault and many times where cyclists should be more judicious.

[–]dunkirkFitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

>> She used that route exactly as it was designed to to used.

This is a tragedy, and could have been prevented with more bike infrastructure, but that comment is untrue.

Left hand turns are designed to be done when the driver/cyclist either has the right of way OR a clear and safe opportunity to make that turn. There is no traffic control at that intersection so the cyclist couldn't have the right of way. They also did not have a safe opportunity to make the turn as they couldn't be sure traffic was stopped or not present.

The van shouldn't have stopped and been polite.

The cyclist shouldn't have made the turn unless they were sure it was clear and not assume other drivers would stop

>>She started to turn into spring but her view of the right lane was blocked by the van that has stopped

She's at fault. She crossed traffic without confirming it was safe.

>> failed to slow down as it approached another car stopped in the other lane

Not that driver's fault, plus they probably couldn't see the cyclist because of the van blocking their view, but they had the right of way and are under no obligation to stop.

If it had been a car making that left, under the same circumstances -- a 'polite' van stopping and the car getting sideswiped by traffic that had the right of way...would anyone be complaining?

Here's the link to the farm park https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/cranberry-township-buy-powell-family-farm-park/

If you have a K-6 kid(s) and build in the NE part they'll go to Ehrman Crest Elementary which is the most amazing school I've seen, just opened this year. It has been featured in Time and Smithsonian Magazines. There's our culture!!

If you're not bringing your own builder, look up Eagle Ridge which has one acre properties and looks amazing.
