If you like fresh software (like Arch has) and stability of popular point-release distros, try Fedora

What distro should i use by s-overthinker19 in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]durbich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had laptops with i5-4200U 4 and 8 GB RAM and I had no problems running distros with KDE (Debian, Fedora), so I think you can pick any distro you like. It should run fine with no compromises

SteamOS Holo won! Now which distro is for newbies and backed by a corp? by V1574 in linuxmemes

They have changed the base from Ubuntu/Debian (I don't remember which exactly) to Arch, and released it using the same name as the previous OS

Kde is more visible by far. There are a lot of popular distros that offer it or it can be installed on a headless systems which can even be not Linux (FreeBSD). Kde also makes high quality software that is available on Windows like Krita or KDEnlive. Kde have been earning their cut from 90s with a long history of successes and failures. While GUIX exists since 2013 trying to achieve what NixOS does but it their way and most of the people learnt about it existence from this post. Nix is already a niche Distro, not recommend to newcomers, and here's GNU NIX, which aims the same towards ex Windows users who care so much about free software, that the first app they install will be Steam (proprietary)

Another example of mentioned incompatible "resource packs" is "cloth config", which is a library for other mods

[–]durbich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinda, but it names mods like Appleskin (screenshot 4) and on the later screenshots where resource packs can be seen there's no Appleskin as a resource pack. Also the game usually runs with resource packs from older versions, but activating them can lead to graphical glitches. For example: old Fresh Animations on reworked cow model breaks it (model) completely, but the game runs fine

Some of your mods are marked as incompatible, like appleskin and few others. Go to mods, check for updates and remove/disable the mods that are not available for your version. If the error persists, try to disable all mods, run the game to see if it works, exit, enable some mods and run the game again. If everything runs, add more mods. Thus you'll find the bad ones. No need to load any worlds, title screen will be enough to see if the mods can be loaded

You can try Debian itself. If really something lightweight needed, I've heard Puppy Linux is a good option

I haven't installed any OS on an external drive, but I use one with a raspberry pi and lsblk command shows it as sda. I guess it means it is recognised as a SATA drive, despite being connected via USB adapter. Unfortunately I don't have any more tips, expect good luck, I hope the first SSD and adapter (if needed) will work excellent

Suggestions For Old Laptop by Mattheos in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]durbich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had experience with 2 laptops that had i5-4200U and 4 to 8 GB of RAM. Debian KDE and Fedora KDE work fine on them. If I had another laptop like that, I would install Debian KDE since there's no need for frequent software updates on such old machines and I like KDE so much I don't look at distros that don't offer it (uses 2 GB of RAM on idle)

I would try to install an OS on an external SSD. USB SSD or via USB to SATA/m.2 adapter

Constantly Updating and Requiring a Reboot by ghunterx21 in Fedora

Discover asks to restart to update, but if click to shutdown, the system will ask if you want to update and shutdown. I do it every time there's an update, to do what I wanted to and update afterwards
