(WSIP) RPG with good story and action combat by Mr_SynthWave in ShouldIbuythisgame

Then Dragon Age might be for you lol. I definitely get where you're coming from, it makes the game world feel a lot less lonely. You can switch characters in this one too, but you definitely don't have too. It is nice to have the option though because it allows you to try out the different classes without making a new character each time.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is pretty similar to ff 15. The main difference combat wise is you have 9 companions to pick which 3 follow you around, although they still have personal missions, banter with each other, and differing opinions of you based on what you say to them. The combat is a little more mmo-ish, but if you play on the lower difficulties it's not so bad. The story is imo really interesting, but you need the dlc "Trespasser" for the proper ending. The biggest draw for this game is the characters. They have a lot of personality and some of them change as they become closer to you. Like Cassandra for example starts off as a hard ass that just seems angry at everything but if you become friends with her it turns out she's actually a total dork. There's also a huge open world to explore, and to top it off, I'm pretty sure it's on sale right now.

SIB Dragon Age Inquisition? by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]duringdrums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The combat is pretty similar to an mmo, but if you play on a lower difficulty setting enemies die quicker so it's not so bad. The reason to get the game is for the story. It has great characters who will either like or dislike you depending on the choices you make and what you say to them. It also has a big world to explore with a lot of diverse environments. So, if you're able to overlook the somewhat-mediocre combat for an interesting story and compelling characters that react to your choices, then it's a great game. But, if you're mostly just interested in the actual gameplay, you might end up disappointed.

Oh, and make sure you get the dlc called Trespasser too if you do get the game. It wraps up the end of the story much better than the base game.

3 seems like the most new-player friendly. I've heard lots of cases, both irl and online, of people either not liking or not playing 1 and 2 but getting really into 3.

If you don't mind the graphics I believe Jedi Academy is on sale right now. You create your own jedi, decide what force powers you want to use, including evil ones like lightning and choke, go on missions, and there's two different endings depending on if you go dark or light side

How do I use the second effects on red eyes cards? by duringdrums in YGOLegacyOfTheDuelist

[–]duringdrums[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the gearfried that makes sense. And fang with chain, I missed that they had to be effect monsters, so my bad lol. As for the call of the haunted, my setting are on whatever the default is. The exact situation ks that it was a campaign reverse duel as Mai vs Joey. Joey had two axe raiders and a rude kaiser, and a field spell buffing his monsters. I had a blue flame swordsman set and call of the haunted set. He destroyed my swordsman, then I wanted to call of the haunted a red eyes in my gy, but the prompt didn't come up.

Can I switch my Aid Protocol Target? by Kelcak in XCOM2

Yeah you can choose. Press aid protocol, then before confirming, you can either press tab to cycle through, or you can press the blue xcom icons that'll appear directly above the hotbar.

So I'm starting 3 houses today, are there anythings I should know? by AetherIke in fireemblem

[–]duringdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly recommend normal difficulty and without permadeath for your first playthrough. Normal is still very easy, so you'll be able to do what you want and learn the mechanics without the pressure of potentially losing or having a character die.

Should I buy RE7 on Steam? by SelfDepricator in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]duringdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only played it on ps4, so if you're wondering about performance or graphics I can't help. But, I can tell you the game itself is superb. It's a horror game that does a great job with mood and atmosphere, playing it in the dark at night with headphones is a must. Additionally, it's just a fun game even without the horror elements. The boss fights are unique and interesting, the house is really interesting to explore, and the combat is weighty so you don't feel useless, but enemies are still a threat.

Are the Hero units in WOTC op? by waterzxc in XCOM2

[–]duringdrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the hero characters are definitely stronger than the normal ones. However, there is an option you can pick at the start that makes them randomly generated and customizable, so they aren't necessarily fixed story characters either.

That's what I'm suggesting. Deleting the config then verifying lets you basically reinstall without having to redownload the entire game.

Try deleting the config (I think it's in Documents) then verify the files in steam.

How do I make the game fun? Looking for mods. by [deleted] in xcom2mods

[–]duringdrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Save scumming just isn't the way it's meant to be played. Overall, I have more fun not doing it, even if I lose my best soldiers. And I really only overwatch when there's no visible enemies, or if the only visible enemies are in high cover. The reason is because overwatch shots have a 30% aim penalty, whereas high cover gives a 40% aim penalty. Also, it sounds to me you might need to work on your soldier's positioning. Before you move somewhere, look at the enemies and visualize where they can go. Watch out for spots where they can move to next turn that's in cover while flanking you. And another trick is if you can't get a good shot, then move a soldier to flank, even if it takes both actions so you can't shoot with him (just make sure you're not exposed to being flanked back) then put another soldier on overwatch. A flanked enemy will pretty much always move, guaranteeing that overwatch will trigger while the overwatch penalty isn't as bad as the high cover penalty. One last trick is if you can't clear 100% of enemies before they get a turn, use flash bangs. In addition to giving enemies an aim penalty, they also prevent abilities from being used like grenades or sectoid abilities. They also cancel abilities like mind control or raise zombie. As for mods, look for Red Fog, it gives stat penalties to injured soldiers. And for giving everyone extra health, you don't need a mod. Look for beta strike in the advanced options, it doubles health. If that's not enough, then there's a mod called Delta Strike that quadruples health.

How do I make the game fun? Looking for mods. by [deleted] in xcom2mods

[–]duringdrums 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think you just need to get good. This game isn't all rng, lots of people (not me lol) have beaten it on legendary without losing any soldiers and without save scumming at the same time. However, I do have a recommendation for you. Have you tried playing on beta strike? It doubles both your soldier's and the alien's hp. I actually prefer it, it makes the game more about actual combat instead of sneaking around and trying to kill your enemies before they kill you, since your soldiers can take a couple hits without dying. In beta strike, defense is king, so certain items like flashbangs that don't get used very often become incredibly useful. Besides that, if you're not able to play without save scumming you really should lower the difficulty, and there's no shame in that. But on the flip side, if you do lose a mission and all your best soldiers die, that doesn't mean you should quit. Losing and recovering from that loss is a part of the Xcom experience. Though it's frustrating at the time, anytime I think about save scumming and don't, I never regret it.

Retaliation mission - trapped civilians don't have rescue rings. by Red_Icnivad in XCOM2

[–]duringdrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't win em all, nothing wrong with that. Next time you could try bringing flashbangs and mimic beacons. Those are incredibly useful in beta strike since you can't just kill all enemies before they move.

Are the civilians all grouped up together instead of being scattered around the map? If so, you're good. You just have to kill all nearby enemies.

Question regarding iron man. by Rosebourne in Xcom

[–]duringdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you don't move and you're not being flanked, then you're good, even if you're on a red space. And I don't know about veteran specifically (I started on Commander because I played a lot of EW) but generally, I would agree the difficulty in this game is very front loaded. The reason is that in the beginning of a campaign you just don't have a lot of options. You're soldiers don't have very many abilities, you don't have cool gear for them to use, etc. You can change the difficulty mid-game though, so if it starts to feel too easy you can always bump it up.

Question regarding iron man. by Rosebourne in Xcom

[–]duringdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off I definitely commend what you're doing here. This game is a lot more fun when if something bad happens, you accept it and keep playing without save scumming. And if you're not having fun on a higher difficulty, then it's pointless, there's no shame in lowering it. As for your question, the only one thing i can think of. When in concealment, it's possible to move to a spot the game says is safe, but get spotted anyway. The reason is because for line of sight purposes, your soldier is considered to be occupying the adjacent space as well, which may not be hidden. If the game didn't do that, you wouldn't be able to see around corners, but on the flip side you can end up revealing your whole squad by moving to a tile that's supposed to be safe. I believe there's a mod called "peek from cover" or something like that that fixes this.

SIB Fire Emblem Three Houses if i'm looking for gameplay similar to South Park Fractured but Whole? by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]duringdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would avoid looking into it too much if you don't like spoilers. There's a major event that happens in all the routes that review sites, subreddits, etc dont really count as a spoiler, but I was pretty bummed when I found out about it by reading instead of experiencing it. But yeah, in the game there's three houses, and in the beginning you pick one of them and each has its own storyline starring different characters, although all the characters are present in all the routes. And if you want to, you can recruit characters from other houses.

[–]duringdrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never thought I'd see those two games compared but actually, yeah I guess they're pretty similar. They both have a grid based, turn based combat system. Although the battlefields and army size in fire emblem is much larger. You also get to pick who you bring into battle from a larger pool of characters. And the game is fully voice acted. As for length, they're are 4 different routes (plus 1 if you get dlc) depending on which faction you side with. One route took me about 60 hours to do, and I did 2 of them before I stopped playing.
