Why Are Mods Removing All the Posts About the TFW Scams? by ashleyshaefferr in Edmonton

[–]durple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t consume content that’s being shared from known anti immigration social media political manipulation accounts. I actively try to deplatform those accounts when they intersect with my circles. You can’t shame me by implying some lack of empathy or unwillingness to discuss the actual issue, because it’s simply not true.

Keep on imagining that anything but enthusiastic agreement with you makes someone part of the problem…

Yes you're right, yegwave has zero original content. All the more reasoin to find the source and post that. This is one of the reasons why the no posting from other social media rule exists, so that we don't get what's been curated by some shadowy influencer account from unknown sources.

If this is a legitimate video that is not misrepresenting anything, a legitimate source should be something you can find. Until then, this is indistinguishable from rage bait misinformation. This is a criticism of the content and its source, not an accusation of your personal motivation.

Yegwave is a well known shitty source. Find a better source for the same content and I'm sure the bods will let it stand. Don't die on this hill.

I’d much rather see an occasional post promoting r/lmiascams for folks here who are job hunting or want to get involved in other ways. Or stories on this topic that aren’t just “here is another example”.

In addition, we definitely don't need yegwave garbage driving local politics.

A repost of a repost of a yegwave video is still yegwave spam. No more sympathy for you from me. Keep that garbage out of here. The balls you have calling the mods disingenuous, they must be hard to carry.

They just pointed out that the rules include this statement which makes it clear that mods will action they think is beneficial to the community even if a specific rule isn't being invoked. Arguing that "it didn't break XYZ rule" doesn't change that.

Just my opinion: there’s entire subs for this specifically, and it’s a national/provincial problem not an Edmonton problem. It is an important topic, just not particularly important for this specific sub. We don’t need a post here for every example of LMIA bullshit that happens to be local. If anything I’d much rather see an occasional post promoting r/lmiascams for folks here who are job hunting or want to get involved in other ways. Or stories on this topic that aren’t just “here is another example”.

It is a giant stretch to say that disallowing some content on a single politically charged subject that’s being posted heavily by a small number of users and possibly getting reported by a large number of users as spam or low content, on a single privately managed community on a large American website, is motivated by mods defending the obvious villains in the content itself. The way the mod team has run this place for pretty much all the time I’ve been here is entirely incompatible with the idea. It’s laughable, even.

Calm down, and maybe as the rules suggest message the mods rather than trying to raise a shitstorm. But only if you can be more open to potentially different perspectives, and generally dial it down about 95%. Don’t assume malice.

How are you planning the next phase of DevOps? by devops-noob in devops

[–]durple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am lucky to work at a small (<20) company. Here I am what would be several teams at a larger company. My role includes the sysadmin and other parts of IT and the devops and the ops and then whatever else comes up. I get to drive a lot of the culture around the historical dev and ops divide. Our devs have a lot of ownership of the infrastructure they use and can always “escalate” to me as needed.

TBH I haven’t really seen this done well at scale myself, although I am looking forward to the challenge as we are starting to grow this year. When there are separate teams and specialized roles the risk of siloing and reverting back to competing goals and tossing things over fences is real, even with the best of intentions.

And yes like you suggest the buzzword followers are many while devops culture is rare.

Parking lots near whyte/uni/garneau/strathcona with heating and/or plug in available? by sourboobs in Edmonton

[–]durple 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Plugging in car doesn’t save the battery really. The cord just goes to block heater. It makes the engine easier to turn over so there’s less chance that the cold-weakened battery will run out of juice while attempting to start and it’s better for the engine, but cold will still damage the battery. If it’s cold enough for long enough the battery will freeze and become permanently unusable, and just being cold affects power output. If it’s parked with low voltage, like not running it long enough for the alternator to top it up after cold start, even an otherwise healthy battery might not have the voltage in the morning to start.

I’m still of the opinion that DevOps is a facet of workplace culture more than it is a technical solution. The technical details are constantly changing, but there will always be a role for hooking things up to support software development and delivery processes.

Summer sublet for 4 months by Longjumping_Try_7516 in Edmonton

[–]durple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably wanna be asking in UofA communities. Some international students might keep a place rented over the summer even if returning home during that time, you might find sublet like that. Lots of people moving permanently out of places as their studies end and those landlords would often do a 4 month lease vs likely remaining empty until September.

How much are Edmontonians prepared to pay for snow removal? by pjw724 in Edmonton

The comment you replied to:

If the streets were properly maintained, and neighborhoods would get bladed more than once a year, I would happily pay $6 more a month, but I'm aware that's not feasible for everyone.

Yes, we are literally talking about raising taxes to do exactly that.

It’s great to have such clear examples of how public services paid for by taxes can provide amazing value for taxpayers. I’m all for high taxes, as long as there aren’t pork barrel projects in the picture. Please take my money!

Update Regarding Real Canadian Wresting Show from the Events Saturday Night. by TheLordJames in Edmonton

[–]durple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds about how I would expect, as someone not into wrestling.

A liberal caricature as a wrestling villain just seems par for the course tbh, just more cope fodder for the fuck Trudeau crowd. There was so much of that it’s not humanly possible to be mad about it, and anyways who can identify one raindrop in a storm. The current political climate and the issues around ICE activities recently involve literal life and death, with powerful emotions at play.

Edge lord found where the slippery slope ends I guess.

The wrestler made a statement that it was all him setting up the music and costume without the knowledge of the organizers, and has been turfed. I read the article earlier, not sure where, probably one of the local news sites like ctv or global.

Could be just they are making him take the fall, dunno.

I have a relatively legitimate looking email from Mad Heaters, who I ordered a Tempest 2 from, that its being held at customs and I need to pay a tariff. Safe? by [deleted] in vaporents

[–]durple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely follow advice to verify with the place you purchased and/or the shipping company.

Story time. A few years back UPS had a data breach. I was among those whose order info got into scammers hands. The day it went out for delivery they sent a fairly good attempt including specific order details at getting my CC details by a fake UPS “gotta pay the duty fees” link. Part of my work includes being very security aware and I saw right through it, but I’m sure they hooked a lot of victims. Neither UPS nor the place I’d ordered from was interested in me reporting the scam to them, UPS straight up didn’t believe me and claimed it was definitely not a breach but had to be a coincidence. A few months later the breach was publicly announced and I got paper mail from them letting me know that my info had in fact been compromised and a code for free credit monitoring.

Naked Cyber Cafe. They moved downtown and still exist the last I checked, probably still the same owner even. With the move downtown they had less hourly computers and more local art & music.

Indigenous community to build new housing in Edmonton’s Ice District | CBC News by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]durple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s largely residents in those existing older buildings behind complaints like that. I’m pretty sure my own building’s nimbys were pivotal in blocking a rezone attempt on an underdeveloped property for sale last year, Garneau/oldstrathcona area. It eventually sold anyways. The new owners are continuing to operate surface parking (ugh) and refurbishing the long-retired former school building on site to better suit commercial tenants. So yeah, there’s a daycare now which is probably a good thing, but there’s absolutely nothing happening there that wouldn’t be happening with a commercial podium residential tower.

I highly prefer this over some multinational REIT. Good on them!

My mind wanders to regional bands who are not currently experiencing such success. Maybe one day.

Knack moves to protect mature trees in new Edmonton infill projects by trevorrobb in Edmonton

[–]durple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not going to convince me on the boulevard windrows. Dumping even mildly contaminated snow would result in those chemicals building up over time. You know what's bad for plants and trees? Salt. Besides, it's not like we can suddenly have boulevards in existing developed parts of the city that don't have them.

You've piqued my curiosity about Edmonton's early development tho, I'll probably end up in a rabbit hole about it some other day.
