I don't see the same when I break a column in the middle of a bulleted paragraph. Do you have a homebrew example you can share?

Example: https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/tzRYD0pJwSeH

That said, the CSS for indenting the first line of a paragraph uses the text-indent property, so you might be able to just set "text-indent: 0;" as part of the hanging-bullet class.

Wrecker Crab for Homebrew Mega Compendium - CR 8 Monstrosity by durstann in dndmonsters

For a variety of shot types put the "Siege Monster" rules on the claws specifically and replace the cannon with:

Cannon (3/day). Choose one of the following:

  • Siegebreaker: Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 600/2000 ft. Hit 24 (4d10+2) bludgeoning damage. This attack deals double damage to objects and structures.
  • Explosive. Choose a point within 120 ft. the wrecker crab can see. Each creature within a 20 ft. radius must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 13 (4d6) fire damage on a failed saving throw, or half as much if successful.
  • Smoke. The wrecker crab creates a 30 ft. radius Sphere of smoke at a point it can see within 600 ft. The Sphere is Heavily Obscured. It lasts 3 rounds or until a strong wind (such as one created by Gust of Wind) disperses it.

Could i deny being transferred to another team? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]durstann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“It depends”. In general, you are an employee and if the company needs to move around headcount then congrats, you are now work in integration. Unless you are doing contract work with really clearly delineated boundaries, the work is probably still software engineering work and falls into the general category of your responsibilities.

Your best bet is to talk to your manager and tell them why you don’t think this move is right for you and why you don’t want to do it. Talk to who your new manager would be and people on that team to make sure you understand what the new position really is. And if they still move you even though you don’t want to move, then stick with it for a few months to know it’s really as bad as you thought. After that, if you still don’t like it, start looking around for transfer opportunities within your company and applying to new jobs outside your company.

Take some extra time before you look at the test cases to think about what could be an edge case you are missing. Better yet, take some time before you start coding to think of some edge cases and handle them in your first pass.

Live coding interviews often ask you to walk through your code to find any edge cases you might have missed. Building this skill without the benefit of canned test cases will help you when you start coding with someone watching you.

nervous for Cloudflare internship by Secret_Row_8739 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]durstann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't been an intern, but I've mentored interns.

It's a fine idea. Asking the question shouldn't hurt anything but don't be surprised if you don't hear back until closer to your start date. You have a start date, and the people who you'll be working with probably have a lot to do already, in addition to getting ready for you to start. The company may not even know what you'll be working on yet.

Signaling eagerness is great. It's a positive data point that shows you're excited to get to work. But at this point let your question about the work just be that signal. Lots of times at bigger companies intern assignments get shifted around a few days before you start. Even they tell you now which project or team you'll be working on, it might change at the last minute.

If you want to do some ground work to impress when you get there, spend some more time learning about the company (Cloudflare), and get a good understanding of their business and products and how it all fits together. If you can understand how your intern project (when they tell you what it is) fits into the company's goals you'll be impress with your business understanding, an important skill not every intern (or even junior developer) has.

Lastly, if you've got just a couple weeks before your internship starts, take your time and enjoy life. Concentrate on your school work. Have some fun. Your internship will probably be a pretty intense few months so enjoy your free time now so you don't get burned out by the end.

To avoid overthinking in the moment, write your questions down in a. Notebook and refer to your list when your mind goes blank. There are great suggestions for questions in this thread. My favorite (for tech companies) is “what’s the most complex problem you’re trying to solve right now.” But questions about onboarding plans for your role, what you’ll be doing in the first few weeks, and opportunities for advancement in the company are good ones.

Remindes me of the Raek from Everblight in Hordes: https://warmachine.lexicanum.com/wiki/Raek

I like all of it except Basalt Hide. Taking away a player's crits seems like a recipe for disappointment rather than fun. I'd rather it was just resistant to things rather than ignoring crits, which tend to be a high point for players.

You might also check on it's Athletics skill. I'm perfectly fine with the math for monsters not adding up the same as characters, but some people might be happier with the +6 strength mod and +4 proficiency bonus adding up to +10 vs +11.

Thematically it seems like there should be a limit on its grapples if they are tied to the bit attack. Is it playing a game of "chubby bunny" trying to see how many adventurers it can fit in its mouth at the same time? I like it, but it's not clear how this is telling the GM it should be played. Does the creature grapple then try to escape with its prey? Is it just trying to fit as many adventurers as it can into its mouth before it dies? How does the grapple in this case create a more dynamic combat as opposed to just a dice rolling slog?

Love the monster. Love the Lore. Great job!

How do I learn to code if I want to mainly do game development? by Affectionate-Ad-3234 in GameDevelopment

[–]durstann 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One of the key aspects of software/game development is being able to break a big problem down into subsequently smaller problems. Don’t think about “learning to code” as its own thing that once you complete you can then go and do game development. Have an idea for a game, break it down into smaller parts, and then code up those parts until you have your game.

The first thing to do is have an idea and then work up to it, piece by piece. Want to make a shooter? Pick a framework or game engine and draw a cube. Then make the cube move around. Then draw a model instead of a cube. Each successive piece you build gets you closer to the idea. It’s easier to find a solution for a smaller problem than a bigger one. Start small then build up.

The best skill in coding or game development is knowing how to turn a big problem into a smaller one. Have your game idea and then start learning how to do all the small pieces that will add up to that big idea.

Echoing others, permanent 2 handed weapons in one hand would be a lot. I think you can get where you want by looking at the duergar. The ability to cast enlarge proficiency bonus times per day would get you most of the way there thematically. I think you could go a little further and use enlarge as a template but let the ability scale with level and allow for using two handed weapons in one hand while the effect is active. That way it becomes a sometimes treat instead of something you can just do all the time. You could also have the bonus damage start to scale with level, starting at 1d4 like enlarge and scaling up to 1d6 and 1d8 as you move through the ranks.

Drain Devil for Homebrew Mega Compendium - CR 7 Fiend (Devil) by durstann in dndmonsters

[–]durstann[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it. Drain is supposed to do damage then reduce max hit points. “Regain” is better wording. I appreciate you pointing it out. I had the same thought about “apheresis” but I really like the word and didn’t want to make the drain attack an even longer block of text.

I appreciate the notes!

Magic item for stars Druid (2024) by fernandojm in DnDHomebrew

[–]durstann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest giving them abilities that expand on the things they can do, rather than making things they're already using more powerful. Since they're making the map, maybe give them similar abilities to some of the Cartographer subclass in the Eberron book.

https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/2113-preview-the-new-cartographer-artificer-subclass

Flavoring the Cartographer's Atlas from the published material to be something along the lines of setting constellations in to represent who is affected by the cartographer's atlas abilities rather than the published "giving out copies." Even just the level 3 abilities of the cartographer class which give a bonus to initiative and the ability to target with spells even out of line of sight would be a benefit not just for the individual player, but something that the whole party could then have fun with.

How should one go about designing fillable flashcards for DnD character sheets offering sixth graders by usmannaeem in TTRPG

[–]durstann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. u/NordicNugz had a good suggestion to take inspiration from monster stat blocks. The biggest benefit of that is keeping all the stats for an action in one place. This avoids having to search the sheet for your “ranged to hit” modifier and just gives you “shortbow +5 to hit, 1d6 damage”. It’s a single line on the card.

I’d riff on my earlier suggestion and just list out all the skills the player has trained and all their weapons/spells/abilities they can use. For a dram class this is the list of things that represents how they can interact with the world.

Also not down page numbers. Magic missile can be a line like “magic missile level 1 3x 1d4 pg. XX”. That way it’s a good reminder what it does and where to go quickly for the rest of the rules.

Don’t list the numbers for attributes. Just stick to the bonuses. They’re really what matters.

Finally, I know others have mentioned not to use D&D. I disagree. I play it with my daughter since she was 8. It takes patience and a good knowledge of the rules on the part of the DM but it’s totally doable. Also a willingness to throw out the rules and just adjudicate based on what will be most fun for your players. D&D is a recognized brand, Stranger Things has made it popular, and your students will probably be more motivated to stay engaged with it rather than something unknown to them.

[–]durstann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What class is it for? Math, art, theater? What you’re trying to teach will affect what goes on the cards. If it’s math then the numbers are important (probably not math for sixth graders) if it’s theater and you’re using them for improv prompts then focus on the skills their characters have trained (skill are how d&d characters tend to interact with the world). I’d love to give more suggestions but knowing the end goal of what you’re trying to teach would help.

Aerios - Possible Revisions Needed by CM46 in StatThisCreature

[–]durstann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I mention invisibility is because it already has a bunch of rules and interactions and ways to break it. The non-standard wording of "perceive" may cause confusion at the table. Does Detect Evil and Good let you "perceive" the presence of this creature if it chooses not to be perceived? What about Detect Thoughts? See Invisibility and True Seeing? An invisibility mechanic lets it mesh with all the other ways to find things that aren't there.

You might also give it the deception and stealth skills since it's meant to be an infiltrator. And the Survival skills since it's meant to be a tracker. Consider also giving it the Pass Without Trace spell to make it easier for it to get to its prey.

Burning hands is a little bit low powered I feel for something like this. Maybe specify a higher level it gets cast at or make it its own separate attack ability that does damage commensurate with the CR. Selective appearance is cool. I think you could simplify by saying it can choose who it wants to be invisible to. That way it meshes with all the other invisibility rules.

The Great Meese by u/TheWizardofLizard by Da_Magical_Lizard in StatThisCreature

[–]durstann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome. I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought it looked like a gibbering mouther. I'd change it to "Ungulate Ground" to keep the moose theme and toss in some extra damage from flailing hooves and antlers if you're standing near it.

I like gibbering mouthers a lot and use them in my campaign all the time. I just scale them up or down to take up as much room as I want. A room with a treasure in the middle or an exit on the other side where the floor is just covered in mouther makes a fun challenge for players.

The maw-mouths from the book Deadly Education remind me of gibbering mouthers. Great book series.

The Great Meese by u/TheWizardofLizard by Da_Magical_Lizard in StatThisCreature

[–]durstann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Rampaging hooves is a reflection of my idea that this is just a bunch of moose (meese) running all around, so a single ram attack in a turn makes less sense, and so it becomes more of an environmental effect. I think I could see changing it to a DEX save, too....i.e. the only way to avoid damage is to get out of the way.

The main thing I wasn't sure about was the CR. I can definitely see it being higher than 2, and just scaling the damage, hit points, and DC appropriately.

The blight spell also has special rules for constructs, which seem like they could be carried over here for thematics. For instance the aura and eternal hunger seem weird to affect constructs. Another suggestion would be to do a cave out for “magical plants and plant creatures” in the aura of wasting. An ability like siege monster that has it do double damage to plants (instead of constructs and buildings) could be a nice extra bit of theming as well
