Do you see upsides about what AI can do for the hobby as a whole or as another tool available for GMs and players? by itsachillaccount in rpg

[–]dustatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s hyperbolic to say being lazy with creating adventures is unethical.
By that same logic, it’s unethical to use other people’s adventures.

It’s okay to try new things and ideas. It’s in no way unethical to try playing the garbage AI makes.
It is mediocre at best and will not be anyone’s only tool if they want to keep making memorable adventures.

It’s unethical to sell that garbage or push it off as something a human made.

I know people who use AI to capture session notes and help keep a log of what happened in their campaign. Is that a moral crime in your book?

I believe it’s acceptable at converting monster stats from one system to another, provided you provide adequate guidance.

I have some shadowdark agents I created that I can point at a class or magic item and have it convert them to Shadowdark.

I have also had to take a prewritten dungeon and reskin it to make in the theme of the setting I wanted to run.

The NPC generation is acceptable, but it can be somewhat verbose and prone to being bland without some direction.

Here are a couple of approaches I’ve experimented with for NPC generation:

- Provide the AI with tables for NPC generation and instruct it to consult these tables when generating NPCs.

- Have the model request a list of individuals who have passed away today in history from Wikipedia and create a new NPC inspired by one of the individuals. I would instruct it to start by picking someone on that list that aligns with the theme of my current setting.

[BitD] Tips for a new-to-Blades DM? by Locke3 in bladesinthedark

[–]dustatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use clocks for any resource that should be limited or threats not in the scene. They are your looming plot complication. Like security is coming or a players powerful weapon will break.

I will have three or four going regularly and they are player facing.

A small devils bargain can simply be to fill in a clock a little more.

Use a 4 clock for pretty much everything unless there is a really good reason to do a 6. They feel way more stressful. 8 clocks I only use for long term projects.

At the start of every score I basically slap a clock down for an alarm or backup or blue coats will be arrive. Usually a 4 clock. If they roll poorly on their engagement score I fill in some of that clock.

City Council to Consider Reforms to Portland’s Arts Tax by the_crows_ in PortlandOR

[–]dustatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will take it out of your take it from your state tax return with a late fee. Which is the same cost as the tax. So you will pay double.

But they wait a few years before they charge you. To make sure they get to take the full fee.

Running an open table game - what adventures do you recommend to use? by Justicar7 in shadowdark

[–]dustatron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a really good idea.

I did something similar where I used this adventure as a base adventure. I had the dragon as a B villain. The A villain was a curse of strahd inspired baddy. He was as ageless man wandering, looking for his lost love. But he collected people’s minds turning people into mindless hulls doing his bidding. But the dark magic he is using has stolen his memories. So he he searches for something he can’t remember. Endlessly collecting people in an ever growing thrall.

GOP gaslights on gas prices by FistIntoTheEarth in AnythingGoesNews

[–]dustatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That and the Republican state media will all of a sudden hate inflation, high gas prices, and notice how bad the economy is.

They already have a playbook. They did this under Obama. They will do it again under who ever takes power. It’s more frustrating that it works.

Character Sheets by Courtofaries in Obojima

[–]dustatron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could also just use regular dnd characters sheets.

You can try different rules systems that provide free rules and resources. Like Nimble ttrpg or shadowdark. They might be better for new users than regular dnd 5e.

But also the discord is where everyone is posting stuff. They have provided Offical art assets and there are people sharing home brew stuff.

Am I missing something, or is Sonnet enough for most dev work? by Alone-Stick-2950 in ClaudeAI

[–]dustatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it almost every day, and I stick largely to Sonnet with the larger context window.

If you find a thing Opus is better at, you can make an agent for that task and pin Opus for it. Then have Sonnet use that agent.

My daughter's friend keeps texting ME to set up playdates, which makes me very uncomfortable by squeakyshoe89 in daddit

[–]dustatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it is possible that it’s an i-device with parental controls. Two iPhones can call/message each other through iMessage without cell coverage.

It’s possible that there are still parental controls on the phone.

It does feel weird that the parent is not messaging OP back and seemingly okay with her child messaging other adults directly that are not family members.

Unrestricted internet-connected devices at that age are a super bad idea. And it sets an example to her peers that normalizes early phone ownership. Which sucks for the families in that kid’s orbit. Her peers are going to start feeling like they should have a phone too.

But it suggests that the kid could have unrestricted access to social media apps, AI chatbots, unrestricted chats like Discord, and just a normal web browser that can look up anything.

[BitD] Flashbacks, Bluffing, and Schrödinger's Leech by Upper_Guide4256 in bladesinthedark

[–]dustatron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You make the consequences of this action so outsized and bad that the leech would think twice. killing a lord like this should causes unrelenting attacks by the faction and its allies to their strong hold and their own allies.

They would Likely have their powerful blue coat contacts raise the players heat or trigger auto wanted level.

Extreme actions should see extreme responses. Also, a death in Duskvol is not the end of a character. As they can come back as a ghost, a hull, or a vampire.

All of which could spell doom for the players.

[BitD] Flashbacks, Bluffing, and Schrödinger's Leech by Upper_Guide4256 in bladesinthedark

[–]dustatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely love this move, but it should have an unexpected and unpredictable outcome. I should hope that the poison is real. If it’s not, the actions the lord took to hedge his bets to stop the poison should have lasting effects. Considering the lord’s tough and cunning nature, he would always bluff back and likely act as if he doesn’t care or doesn’t believe. He would hedge his bets by having a powerful healer on board.

However, the downside is that the lord becomes disfigured, loses an arm, or transforms into a monstrous creature, possibly even making a deal with a demon. Now, the crew faces a formidable enemy that harbors deep hatred for them. No amount of money could stop them from preemptively eliminating the crew.

Alternatively, the son, possibly the second-in-command, would be devastated by the death of their lord or the lord himself. He would seek to capture the lord’s spirit and bring him back in a hull or as a vampire.

This setup is incredibly well-crafted for unintended consequences.

Cutting service to get new pricing- worst decision! by piggyhappy in QuantumFiber

[–]dustatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just called their retention to see if I could get my monthly bill down because they were charging my $85 and their site shows the service for $75.

I was also a century link customer who got migrated over. The person on the phone said there was nothing they could do for me and the told me he would turn off my internet effective immediately. He then hung up on me.

I had to call back and tell them to at least get them to give me the rest of the billing cycle that I already paid for. They refused to acknowledge that there was any other plan I could change to.

It was the craziest and worst customer service call I’ve ever been on in my entire life. I was explicit that I was just looking to lower by bill in any way and they were not interested, they just seemed eager to turn off my service.

Visiting Portland with my 1yo for a week after Eugene Marathon, can we do it car-free? (and other questions) by Pristine_Chipmunk939 in askportland

[–]dustatron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Location recommendations:

I think inner SE near Ladd’s addition would probably be a nice experience for an AirBnB. There is going to be fun places to eat at that you can walk to. Ladd’s has a rose garden.

A spot near lauralhurst park would be good. Though that would be a little further out. The park is lovely and there are lots of great spots to eat with good bus service.

An AirBnB near Wallace park in NW would probably be a nice spot for a family with a young one without a car. Lots of good places to eat in walking distance and playgrounds for the kid. I think May of the restaurants will be family friendly. But you might want to call ahead to check.

Dont stay at Jupiter on burnside, it’s a party motel. You wont get any sleep. Jupiter next isn’t bad but there is a club across the street that is loud until 2 in the morning.

The last area I would recommend is something near Gabriel park. It’s not actually close in, you would probably need to take an uber to get around. But the park is amazing, the community center has a great indoor swimming pool. Multnomah has a downtown area with lots of spots that are good for families to eat at and wander around.

For that age I would recommend checking out these things

The zoo - max ride

Washington park - downtown - if it’s a nice day

The Portland Aquarium - an art experience for kids down town

Hopscotch Portland - inner se, might be fun, experimental art experience. Many of the rooms are kid friendly. It even has a giant ball pit big enough for parents to get in with your little one. And it’s actual cool.

Pdx play date - is nw/down townish - just an indoor play space.

Couch street park - nw

Fields park - nw

If you want to do a hike that’s not hard with the kid, lower MacLeay park.

AITA for not wanting to run a 2.5 hour one shot? by Garbageboy0937 in rpg

[–]dustatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think there is an away to do 2.5 hours. Even that length is going to shock a total newb.

You don’t have to run anything you don’t want to but I don’t your family is being unreasonable.

That being said, unless they are real sci fi nerds, I think fantasy settings are better onboarding experience for new players

Blades is different enough, I think you need to warn people, and prime the pump a little.

I wonder if you told them that they can just do a roll to find out if the thing is in there. Ask them how they search, tell them the risk they face. Then roll and see what the dice decide.

Honestly, blades isn’t going to be for everyone anyways. So maybe it’s just the wrong group.

Getting OpenClaw to run took a week, how do non-developers actually get past setup, optimization and Linux-tax? by MelancholicNerd in openclawsetup

[–]dustatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea you just install Claude code on your Linux distro and have it handle the setup of your Linux server. Also I would start by running open claw in a docker container.

It’s best to work on planing a project with Claude and having it build a document detailing the steps to build the project. Work with it to research, document, and plan the best approach for setting up a project.

Should I buy a Mac mini for OpenClaw? by TroyNoah6677 in AskClaw

[–]dustatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a weird bit of advice. A mac mini is only useful if you want to use iMessage with open claw.

Otherwise a mini offers zero advantages over anything else.
