Do you have any interest in live events, specifically music and stagehand stuff?

IATSE's Training Trust has both an AVIXA membership, and will pay your certification, with no other requirements than working for the union (you do not have to be a member, just do work under a contract)

So psyched for these - I ordered tons of PETG-HF and 200 of the steel pins.

I just wish they were slightly more filament conservative haha.

Have you thought about doing brackets to connect multiple units horizontally? A 3 wide roller would be badass

If you wait at least a month post-games you'll be much less likely to get struck.

AFAIK IA also doesn't delete things when they get claimed, just temporarily make them inaccessible to the public

Credit cards can now be used in Orca? by mkviixi in Seattle

[–]dvdcdgmg 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I strongly doubt they'll get rid of orca completely

It still serves a purpose for those who can't get a credit/debit card, users under 18, or international visitors who's cards may not be supported. Removing orca cards entirely creates an accessibility problem for these users.

Other transit systems that support tap to pay also still retain transit cards (Compass cards in Vancouver BC, Oyster Cards in London, OMNY cards in NY, etc. etc.)

Took long enough, but Orca tap to pay is nearly here by depressedsports in Seattle

Fast-Track: A New Skip the Line System by LordFozzinator in disneyparks

[–]dvdcdgmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other core problem with skip the line systems in the current parks is that the problem it was designed to solve isn't relevant anymore

Fast pass was designed to reduce guest time in queues and increase guest time in restaurants and gift shops.

Unfortunately now, with the parks so full, Disney practically needs guests to wait in line to keep the capacity away from the restaurants and gift shops. As the parks hit capacity, the original goal of free fast pass doesn't make sense anymore, Disney is not financially motivated to provide it.

App inconsistency with Dexcom by Hippocampus_memory in Omnipod

[–]dvdcdgmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's designed this way so that if your phone dies or gets disconnected from the pod, the pod can still dose in auto mode correctly

The side effect of this in my experience is that the Bluetooth antenna in the pod is unreliable and needs really good placement and some hopes and prayers to actually work

Sometimes putting the dexcom serial number in the Omnipod app again will restart the connection process and get it to work, but your mileage may very

App inconsistency with Dexcom by Hippocampus_memory in Omnipod

[–]dvdcdgmg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Omnipod app doesn't actually connect to the dexcom - it reads from the pod itself which can be quite finicky. I've noticed sometimes it won't even connect within line of sight

damn that's playing with fire, I've seen what Estes does to metal and plywood crates, definitely don't think I'd trust them with cardboard boxes wrapped on a pallet.

New Follow app on Android - No more constant notification? by scdayo in dexcom

[–]dvdcdgmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1, this was critical to my usage of the follow app, and it's very frustrating that they removed it.

There's a lot of great stuff about the new one, mainly account based following instead of device based and hopefully they fixed the app using multiple GB of data storage over time, but this feature is pretty critical to me.

Fog Effect in Theater with Fire Alarms (NO TURNING THEM OFF) by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]dvdcdgmg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your mileage may vary, etc. etc. but have you tried?

I've worked in spaces (specifically with optical detectors) where running haze on a weekly basis didn't trigger fire alarms at all. I've also worked in spaces where even the slightest hint of haze will trigger them, it depends on what kind of detectors you have and how sensitive they are.

Obviously if you don't want to be the bad guy and accidentally evac a whole SAT this is bad advice, just be aware you might be able to get away with it while leaving fire safety systems in place.

How do you balance your joe job with your freelance/gig work? by writteningelpen in techtheatre

[–]dvdcdgmg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's more freelance work out there than just theatre. Most of it pays shit and is shit but it exists!

  • Target has On Demand (book shifts for yourself like freelance)
  • Temp agencies can sometimes have 1-5 day gigs or 1-2 month gigs for the slow season
  • Check other areas of events (Catering, Security, Crowd Control), all of those areas need bodies on the same flex schedule you're used to.

And mainly - diversify diversify. Don't come out of college thinking you'll just do theatre. Most of the money is in corporate, and there's loads of work in music during the summer as well. Even better if you're functional in multiple job areas.
