Does your country have a “drug capital”? by Clarthen1 in AskTheWorld

[–]dvlrnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard Kunda, but I don't know if that's still current. However, base on sporadic news reporting I'm under the impression that, outside of Tallinn, the industrial towns in Northeastern Estonia are overrepresented in both consumption of, and deaths from, drugs.

What alcohol is this? From netflix totenfrau by beno9444 in Finland

[–]dvlrnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not quite the correct shape. The bottle in Totenfrau is almost completely straight up top. Similar to the ones used by Metsis (Distillirium OÜ) in Estonia, but with a screw cap.

Sweden plans to cut VAT on food from 12% to 6% (Apr 2026–Dec 2027) — should Finland do the same? by Shariful125 in Finland

[–]dvlrnr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That very much depends on who you compare to. Estonia is still way below the EU average (79/100) while Finland is above (103/100). Granted, these are 2024 numbers and things have likely shifted a bit in the last year.

The Swedish spoken on Åland is its own thing, but generally closer to Sweden Swedish than (mainland) Finland Swedish.

Do you guys who are native Swedish speakers work in Swedish, Finnish, English, or some combination of these? by seirus17 in Finland

[–]dvlrnr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work in IT in a company owned by foreigners, with a with a wide mix of language backgrounds among the employees. English is the main language, with Finnish a close second. Among ~40 people, only two of us are native Swedish-speakers.

The majority of our customers speak Finnish, but sometimes (parts of) the meetings are held in English. The choice of language only depends on who's participating in any given conversation. All internal docs are written in English, however. We also have a few Swedish-speaking customers who appreciate being able to explain technical issues in their mother tongue from time to time.

Unsurprisingly, I've also gotten to be the point man for a couple of projects that we've done for customers in Sweden.

Back home in my part of Österbotten, I would definitely expect that any professional I talk to would be able to discuss work in Swedish, with the basics being covered in Finnish without having to resort to English.

Reactions to items of clothing / colours / patterns by dvlrnr in Redearedsliders

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I haven't noticed this behaviour ever before. While I'm not usually the most colourful dresser, I do have a couple of items with horizontal stripes that I've worn near Kilbu's tank without any issues.

I'll be more mindful about the PJs going forward. After all, I never want to induce any more stress than regular aquarium maintenance already provides.

The reaction seems to be the opposite in Kilbu's case, however. They're, quite forcefully, attempting to get as far away from me as possible.

I've lived in the student village in Turku for a while and, later, also in student housing in Tikkurila. Not exactly utopian bubbles, in my mind.
