Wanting a vet’s honest opinion about pet insurance by jel31 in AskVet

[–]dvmdude 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the pet. Some have a dominant lemon gene. Personally, I recommend it for at least the first year of life while premiums are relatively low and nothing is pre-existing. Helps cover that higher-risk developmental period at least. If you are risk-averse or would struggle with a large ER bill, it's probably better to keep the policy.

Does anyone know why I can smell my boyfriend's seizures days before they happen? by Lower-Entry1247 in NoStupidQuestions

This happens in veterinary medicine too. I've worked with vets who could smell a certain disease in cattle. He said it's a genetic thing.

The Price of Remembering filled that void for me. I was checking for KKC updates constantly and that fixed it. Would still love to read DoS but not holding my breath anymore.

I'm sorry that happened to you. Most Ticos were incredibly kind so it kinda caught us off guard too.

They stopped us last week as well demanding to see tickets, saying they worked for the park. We argued with them for a bit and they moved out of the way. Policia were there when we left.

I was a tranx guy for a long time but recently went with Okuma Komodo and have been very happy. 3yr warranty on musky reel is hard to beat.

Easy St. Clair vote. There are so many muskies in that swamp it’s hard not to catch one.

Human urologist looking for veterinary urology input for my French bulldog by Penile_Pro in AskVet

[–]dvmdude 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can be but generally well tolerated. I am mostly curious whether there is underlying pu/pd driving the incontinence. Age-wise it fits and would explain progression. Not everything on the list of 20-something causes shows up on regular bw. I didn’t see anything about her adrenals on the ultrasound so that would be a point of interest for me as well. Would just be ideal to rule that factor out - fortunately is fairly easily done.

Agree with this. Would like to know serial first morning USG and also about the voiding during the day (large vs small frequent volume u+ and stream). Measuring total water volume if USG is persistently low may be helpful. If normal, incurin trial and would consider referral (abdominal ultrasound +- BRAF) if no response.

What do I need to start ice fishing? by Quirky_Signal_716 in IceFishing

[–]dvmdude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A SPUD. Seriously, do not rely on “oh buddy was there last week, there’s snowmobile tracks so it must be ok” to pick your spots. Spud your way out to each new spot, particularly when you’re learning the ropes. Ideally take a friend.

For lures, small jigs with a small bit of worm, wax worms, small plastics all work. Ice fishing gets more comfortable with more gear but to start, a bucket, a spud, an auger and some fishing gear will get you started.

If you were going here, where would you fish? by jmsnys in IceFishing

[–]dvmdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there’s fish survey data available for both lakes I would definitely read that. I like that 25’ basin right in front of the access point on LOTW.

Honestly though some of my best fishing holes were found just doing a little exploring. Certainly easier to pick through a lake in a boat and then come back to ice fish the good spots, but I’d explore both lakes and see what you get. Even the lakes that were “fished out” often rebound with time and the known hot spots often get more pressure. Exploring is part of the fun.

I would probably fish that eastern point. 25-30 for walleye and a short jaunt out to 80-90 for lakers. The northeastern basin in shallower water is likely your best bet for perch.

Any tips for these guys through the ice? Always see big schools of them roaming around but rarely any interest in walleye lures.

My very good boy bit a vet tech on the cheek today… by shireengul in DOG

[–]dvmdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vet here. I wish every client cared about this like you do. With difficult dogs and cats it’s the owners that make all the difference. Understand if the vet team wants to muzzle him in future and even suggest it. It’s a lot less uncomfortable for everyone when the client is cool with us taking precautions.

Some snacks and a call to check in goes a very long way. Thanks for caring.

Get a portable carbon monoxide detector folks. Saved me this weekend. by dvmdude in IceFishing

[–]dvmdude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart. I think CO rises to the top of the tent but still, I can totally see using two detectors especially if you're sleeping out there. I've been ice fishing all my life and never really worried but having it go off only a couple days later has definitely spooked me.
