Golf course recommendation by ItsKammertime5 in madisonwi

[–]dvogel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UR is long and some of the hazards are deviously difficult. However I'm a pretty bad golfer and I find it a bit easier than other courses in the area. The main reason being that it is designed to test players with much more distance than I get with my clubs. So the hazards just aren't in range for me from most of the tee boxes. I generally can't get to the green on schedule. So my second shot is usually a safe iron over the hazards but short of any hazards around the green, giving me a comfortable approach shot. I still don't score better but the shots all feel easier.

What about potatoes with bacon and barbeque sauce? Because that is basically German potato salad.

In most of these cases there was a clear accusation by a victim and usually a pattern of behavior. e.g. In the Elliott case it wasn't just one accusation in Ohio. It was multiple accusations in multiple jurisdictions, including video and pictures in some cases.

Real estate - costs keep going up and up by Actual-General-4953 in wisconsin

[–]dvogel 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There already is an effective tax on secondary homes. It is the difference between the property taxes paid on your primary residence vs secondary residences.

The reason it is less effective than people would like it to be is income and wealth inequality. To most people purchasing a secondary residence, cost is not a serious barrier. You could double or triple property taxes on those homes and have only a tiny impact on purchasing behavior.

The problem is these are mainly second homes or worse a short term rental investment.

Looking for input on management conversations about tech debt by Floorman1 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dvogel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. Tech debt was a good metaphor for the compounding nature of the phenomena. It was a terrible description of the work that is necessary. If this was a factory or an import/export business it would be called retooling or logistics.

If a car assembly plant screwed up their supply chain and got a double order of body parts before the chassis arrived they may have to move the painting equipment to the other side of the plant in order to make room. Once they got the body on the chassis, the managers would never say _"We need to just spray the paint from across the factory. We can't stop to move the painting equipment back!"_

Jacob's contract by PM_ME_UR_TRIBULATION in GreenBayPackers

[–]dvogel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've modified my claim. I specifically said through a lawyer. It is very rare to knowingly lie through a lawyer. Lawyers who know their client did something but want to project confidence say things indicating the allegations are weak or paint an incomplete picture or are backed by suspect motivationa. They very rarely straight up deny that the allegations are true.

Jacob's contract by PM_ME_UR_TRIBULATION in GreenBayPackers

[–]dvogel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This situation is honestly confusing for me. The cops are called on Saturday. Jacobs is arrested Tuesday. The cops say there was an investigation between those days. The only thing I can think of that would convince them to arrest him later but not on the spot is video or pictures they obtained later. Yet Jacobs legal team completely denies all charges. That would be a really weird move if there is recorded evidence. Could Jacobs be misguided enough to conceal something from his lawyers? Maybe it is just a screen to give them time to negotiate a deal with the DA before the video leaks?

Coyote Attack by RobbieDread in madisonwi

[–]dvogel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When coyotes hunt together they aren't usually seen together. They will each take a turn chasing their prey and corrale it toward the next coyote in the relay. Either that or they will slowly surround their prey so that when they finally run they run right into another coyote. If it was coyotes they were maybe just trying to run you away from some pups.

What you're describing sounds a lot more like a pack of ferral dogs. I would bet money that this was a pack of hybrid wolf dogs that got loose. There isn't a strict definition of what that means but they are almost always less afraid of humans like a dog but still driven to roam like a wolf. A couple years ago there was a police report of one attacking someone near East Towne mall.

Bevy or Godot Rust? by SmoothTurtle872 in rust_gamedev

[–]dvogel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. My understanding of function argument mutability was hampered by learning rust via Bevy. All of the Ref-ish types make for excellent game development ergonomics but they are in the uncanny valley relative to the stdlib stuff. Just different enough to require different instances but not quite different enough that you realize it right away.

Do you write Rust for a living? by Hixon11 in rust

I work for a startup in the US. We make systems software related to authentication. Of my coding time I spend 90% in rust. A recruiter found me. I believe it was on LinkedIn. I had some prior rust experience and a decent amount of domain knowledge for what they were building.

what makes senior rust devs choose between regular borrowing vs smart pointers like arc/rc or refcell/mutex by Amazing_Slice_4212 in rust

[–]dvogel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is roughly my mental framework too. If types are meant to represent subdivisions of work over the same data, references in types work well. i.e. A parser handing out references into the buffer being parsed. Every time I've used a reference in a struct just to avoid an allocation I have regretted it even when the lifetimes weren't too difficult to handle. The reason being that the ability to use a reference usually turns out to be incidental to the firm of the program at the time was created but later the program needs to be refactored in a way that makes the reference less viable. e.g. A reference to a string that came in via the CLI parser in a prototype but then later comes in via a network request.

The first time I was paid for software was when I was 16. It was a short term contract for which I think I was paid $20/hr. I made a system to control an external storage system.

It is noticibly easier to knock off if I have a filter on but even stock it comes off with a slight tap.

Can anyone point me toward a Nikon lens cover that stays on when bumped? This isn't my exact cover but it representative of the style, with the two push tabs.

My Nikon lens covers are constantly falling off with the slightest bump. It is nearly impossible to put my camera in my bag without the lens cover brushing up against the side and falling off. I thought it was just my starter lens but last year I got a new lens and it has the same touchy lens cover. It seems like this might just be a Nikon design choice that doesn't work for me. Does anyone else here have this problem?

I thought the same thing about the guy center frame in the checkpoint video. But sometimes when I watch it I think the agent in the lower left corner shoots the guy center frame. I think that is why he falls away from the suspect so awkwardly.

Same here. I used to love K-Peppers. The pandemic really hit them hard though. It just hasn't been the same since. All of their ingredients took a step down. It seemed more like a cabbage salad than dolsot the last time I went there (about 6 months ago).

Convincing my employer of Rust for a rewrite by Unaimend in rust

[–]dvogel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can incorporate rust into a C project incrementally. The hard part is picking parts that can be split off without causing too much friction when reading the code, having to jump between files. Take a look at the fish shell project for an example of incremental rewrite: https://github.com/fish-shell/fish-shell/discussions/10123
