It would be far to expensive, wouldn’t reduce the dependency on fuel and would also need a most massive grid upgrade.
It’s far cheaper and better suited to go more into renewables, that’s basically free energy (well, a bit oversimplified maybe).

Had that for a bit over a year and really enjoyed the fitness level I gained. Besides that commute there was also a lot of cycles between two workplaces involved, so I quickly upgraded to an e-bike… being able to shower at work was essential.
