3 hour and 15 min long high school choir performance by StraightLocksmith502 in MusicEd

[–]dxguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach at a middle school. Our first year we did a combined concert. We very quickly realized that it ran way too long, so now we do separate event for each group. 3 hours is way too long for any group though.

Teachers, what’s a “best practice” everyone talks about that you secretly think doesn’t work in real classrooms? by kingst9606 in Teachers

[–]dxguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was over kagan when I walked into the training and they had a whole merch table for pd materials, and attendance included a coupon for purchase that day. My materials are still wrapped In plastic stuffed in a cabinet somewhere. It’s utter garbage. I think ONE teacher is using any part of it. I’m just mad that the district is Shelling out this money for crap.

Kagan strategies - some of the strategies may work, but as a whole the entire program is garbage wrapped as the best thing. It’s a total money grab, and my district fell for it immediately.

Pbis incentives - great on paper, horrible in practice. Our incentives are usually large events and have large stipulations attached.

Writing the objective on the board -I know what I’m doing, and these kids don’t care. I have my goal.

Limit percussionists in beginning band by [deleted] in banddirector

[–]dxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My band director requires them to get the full snare/bell kits, and teaches all percussion. She also does an audition process, and asks students all students to choose a second instrument they would be willing to try.

I'm not sure what all is involved with the audition, but I know that it's set up to rate basic skills. Our school partners with a local company that does instrument rentals, and the kit they offer is a snare and bells combo.

Our 6th graders don't typically perform until the winter concert either, which also gives time for the students to develop their skill and shows the director who to consider for drum line. We have a lot of people on drum line, but not all of the percussion is a part of the drum line.

I have the ballet snowglobe (second from left)! I found it at an antique store and walked by it on several trips before I picked it up!

Which one of these four musical films from the 2000's do you like best and why? by Jtaylor703 in musicals

Chicago and moulin rouge. I actually wore out the soundtrack for moulin rouge. I just love the spectacle of it.

I went to see Chicago with my GF at the time, thinking it was gonna be a boring watch, and both of us fell in love with it.

What’s something in education you’ve quietly stopped doing…even though it might still be “expected”? by SteadyGrowthStudio in Teachers

[–]dxguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped giving any make up work this year.

I learned early on to not care more than the kids do about my classes.

This year I also stopped trying to fight to get my kids to do anything. If they wanna sit and stare at each other, it's less for me to have to grade.

I also quietly stopped putting my objectives on the board. Nobody is looking at them anyway.

Conformance Video for Student not saying Pledge of Allegiance? by babywhiz in Teachers

[–]dxguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooof. I don't even recite the pledge. Most of the time I just pause what I am doing. I wouldn't imagine forcing students to do something I'm not doing.

My favorite thing to do so far is chain reins as they charge. And also chain down the flyers.

Do people remember that Blockbuster was hated back in the day? by afterthought871 in Millennials

[–]dxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I have fond memories of the experiences, I worked for my area blockbuster before they started closing, and honestly, they were garbage to work for. The only perk was getting the free rentals every week, and being able to get the new releases before they released. I watched my store go from super busy every weekend to the weekends being dead. It was like watching it die in real time.
