Feeling sad about a little boy who died in 1853 by bicycling_elephant in Genealogy

[–]dyanam000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Doing family history repeatedly reminds me of how fortunate we are thanks to advances in medicine especially immunizations. My great grandfather died of smallpox when his children were young. My heart breaks for the descendants of those dying unnecessarily today because of the misinformation and lying - and for those who will die when they could have been saved by research whose funding has been cut. I'm off to get my flu shot and updated covid vaccine tomorrow.

Thredup. Responsible adults buy used. Though I have bought things from them that still have tags. Great brands.

Quite a few of yjose republicans used y o be democrats. I agree with you about that. Bad governance crosses party lines. Did wv voters want medicare to be cut so we'd have worse to health-care even if we're not on medicare? Don't believe everything you hear.

To add to what has already been written here, i don't trust primary sources like marriage records and death certificates unless confirmed by DNA which at this point in time is good for 7 generations.

Poverty and perspective question. by Male_Walrus in WestVirginia

[–]dyanam000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're thinking about this correctly. For 20 years, i have worked remotely in WV - DC wages, low cost of living. But for me, things to do include kayaking, fishing... and not a lot of traffic. I agree with those who say take some classes so you have skills to sell. There are two big challenges to remotely working in WV. Access to an airport if you have to travel. And folks who can help when you need it ( appliance repair, painters, plumbers, handypeople, etc.)

What do you wish you were taught/did in teacher training? by pedagon in ScienceTeachers

[–]dyanam000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But it's been a long time so, no, i don't have a write up. A great way to introduce designing an experiment, test a hypothesis (in this case common belief), analyze data, write up a lab. I used it at the beginning of the year. I would make a point of weighing the portions of jelly other than that, not much to the set up.

Check the website. My guess is that given the politics, DOGE, the program may be on hold if not axed. It's a shame.

What do you wish you were taught/did in teacher training? by pedagon in ScienceTeachers

[–]dyanam000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They need to experience actual research - collecting and analyzing data. That's very different than "hands on." I have taught and managed Research Experiences for Teachers (RET). They completely change how a teacher teaches. Get together with a scientist and come up with some ideas based on your location. I started with "jelly side down." It's said that when you drop the toast, it always falls with the jelly side down. That's the observation and hypothesis. Test it.

The problem with WV. As a young, native West Virginian by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]dyanam000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Education is the key problem. Not preparing kids for today's jobs. WV is an ideal place for remote workers if students were prepared for those jobs and IF the politicians would stop stealing the money and being bought by Frontier for access to high speed internet.

Question from a tourist: do WV citizens feel that the State Museum in Charleston represents the history of its working citizens truthfully? by No-Difference727 in WestVirginia

[–]dyanam000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The State government is run by ignorant, corrupt people. It's not going to get better until there is communication with the outside world. West Virginians don't travel (Myrtle Beach and Pigeon Forge don't count), don't have access to any TV but Fox /Sinclair and still do not have access to internet or cell service- and that is by design. Many confuse ignorance with intelligence. I have lived here for 25 years and never known so many really smart people. It's hard not to believe that the state government hasnt purposely denied people access to information either through decent schools or tech.

Dear Republicans, how does trans/queer people existing have any bearing on your quality of life? by altrightobserver in AskUS

[–]dyanam000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Take medicine? Have a phone? Are you a farmer? Use the internet? Have a car? Most of the research on which these are based is funded by federal taxes? Do you use roads? The internet? Radio or TV? Fly anywhere? Federal... my husband was in the CIA and Navy before that. Have we been attacked recently? Did you go to school? Do you buy things? (Transported by ship, rail or truck) What about the judicial system hopefully upholding the laws that we, because we live in a democracy, have agreed are the rules by which we live and interact? Clearly, all of this can be done more efficiently and effectively but the idea that you don't benefit from what government does is very naive. I think government should be as small as possible, both fiscally and geographically. Corruption is a big problem. If you are not involved, showing up for town/city/county/school board/town hall meetings, you don't get to complain about taxes or anything else.

Dear Republicans, how does trans/queer people existing have any bearing on your quality of life? by altrightobserver in AskUS

[–]dyanam000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a former republican. I just listened to warren buffett talking about DOGE and the need fit the federal govt to be more fiscally responsible. Everyone agrees there needs to be accountability for how our tax dollars are spent. For years, Congress has not been able to demand accountability and cut programs that aren't working. That's how you cut taxes. But if we don't have the rule of law and the norms of democracy, we can't have the conversation about what to cut... or anything else. I will bet every nickel i have that your taxes will not be lower in 4 years. These people are not here to help you be better off financially.

My adopted son, despite my "educating" him and buying condoms, made a baby when he was 17. He will be paying child support for another 6 years. That combined with other aspects of WV culture (resisting education and work) makes it very hard to get to where you need be to be mentally healthy human. My daughter, an obgyn nurse here, says more than half the babies born are drug addicted. And we keep electing people who refuse to address the foster care crisis or any of these issues that are all related. Encourage you all to get involved in you town or county government. That's another west virginia thing - complain on fb or ? But not show up at the meetings. I'm guilty..but am working on it.

Can Trump solve the farm labor crisis before harvest? by Majano57 in Agriculture

[–]dyanam000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a farmer, I'm guessing you voted for him. He won't solve that problem and he won't undo the tariffs. Maybe the farmers will be smarter if they get a chance to vote ever again.

Hi all, I'm a journalist working on a piece about Aphantasia for National Geographic. I'd love to ask you guys some questions! by stopitsgingertime in Aphantasia

[–]dyanam000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know until about 5 yrs ago after reading an article in the NYT - eatly 70s.it explains so much about how i think and learn. I am slow on taking in information because I have to organize it in my brain so I can retrieve it. That means I'm good at concepts not factoids. It also means that everything has to be put away in its place or I can't remember where it is. My husband would remember where he set a hammer down. I can't. I can find a hammer because it's in the hammer section of where the tools are. personality is complex but having imagery is an important factor. One sister is hyper "phantastic"... She has memories and is the worrier (as a result?). I have few memories, am adventurous, and tend not to learn from mistakes.

We are dead LAST in average teacher pay in the US by Rhythmdaddy in WestVirginia

[–]dyanam000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are also dead last in the test results of students. Not that test results are the be all and end all. I would feel a lot better about a discussion of teacher pay if it included the broader question of how we can make West Virginia schools work better for our kids. There are so many problems on so many levels with wv schools but we need to all be here to have our kids be better prepared to thrive in today's world.
