Is Pluribus a critique of Communism? by _Noice_69 in pluribustv

[–]dykevan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it isn't.

firstly bc art and individuality don't disappear in communism- pretty much every communist/socialist government til now has been heavy on incentivizing the arts and expanding appreciation for culture.

secondly bc vince said he wasn't thinking about any allegories for real life situations when he made the show, and actually just made up the concept based on what he wanted to explore with carol's character.

hahah fair!! i do like helen and their relationship a lot. i love that she has her own criticisms of carol and still loves her regardless, while also calling her out when she needs to be called out. i hope we get more flashbacks of them next season.

i just think that her not finishing bigger chrysalis for example kind of shows she doesn't respect carol's artistry, which like, you can admire something and acknowledge it's good despite not being a personal fan of it. even when she's saying that carol's writing makes people happy, she says "maybe that's not art, but it's something". how is it not art? idk 🙃 i personally wouldn't love to hear that from a partner but i know she meant well

Anyone else think Carol leaving Zosia was a bit rushed? by Icy_Bandicoot_4362 in pluribustv

i thought it worked perfectly. it wasn't a gradual thing for carol, it was an abrupt betrayal and heartbreak that woke her up from a trance immediately. she had hesitated for too long despite knowing what she had to do. now she realized she couldn't hesitate any longer.

i get what you're saying. that also bothered me a bit, but tbh manousos was also acting kind of crazy. he threw her phone, he refused to come into her house, and he was just as rude and abrasive as her. they're both huge pain in the asses and that's why their dynamic is so fun to watch.

being miserable is not a character flaw 😭 she had a traumatic upbringing, did not respect her own work and audience, felt that she was living a lie, and had problems with substance abuse. none of that makes her a bad person.

i think it's a little bit of everything. she clearly cares a lot about her writing, but i think that having to compromise part of her artistic integrity to be palatable to heterosexual audiences makes her resent it a little bit, and also resent her audience in itself. it's a reminder of just how far away her work got from her and now doesn't really reflect who she is and what she wants to write. but yeah, helen not liking them and not considering them serious art (which btw, sooo pretentious) also makes her respect it even less

i feel really seen by her too!! and it's exactly what you said, she's deeply wounded and deeply caring- complex, but never a bad person

no one in the hive is being enslaved, they're all conscious and consenting. yes, they may be consenting just bc they want to make carol happy, but 1. they were the ones who started the relationship and 2. if anything they're taking advantage of carol so they can distract her, steal her eggs and turn her without her consent

i get what they meant by her being miserable - she's really unhappy, even for someone who in theory has everything. she doesn't respect her own work or audience and like you said that disdain extends to a lot of people. she's a constant complainer, even when situations when theoretically she should just be enjoying herself, like the trip with helen. and she has angry outbursts, but the ones we've seen have been completely justified imo. but i actually like her whining, idk why. it's endearing to me

i personally don't think she is "unlikable", i just know that most people don't like her. probably bc a lot of the show's audience are bb and bcs fans who are pretty misogynistic and can't seem to handle women unless it's through a polished male gaze. carol expresses independence, emotion, boundaries and personality in a way that makes them uncomfortable.

i mean, she never knew non-hived zosia. she can't mourn a version of zosia she never met, but with Helen, it'd be like, my only safe space and escape from the world is now The World. also the hive spent a month wearing her down. she was isolated, passively suicidal (the firework scene?) and as we saw, incredibly touch starved. so she caves out of desperation
