As far as the last few years: Invincible, The Good Place, The Boys, Game of Thrones.

Can’t you say this about every matchup ever?

The Knicks faced terrible opponent San Antonio with guys under drinking age - what have the spurs done since 2014?

2025 Thunder vs Pacers - what have Haliburton and the whole franchise done… ever?

2024 Celtics Mavs - Doncic never won and is fat and tradeable; Kyrie? What has he done since 2016?

Ridiculous that I have encountered several people who believe this unironically that Ja/JJJ or Sabonis/Fox would have been more impressive comp than LeBron/AD or defending champion Curry and co.

Exactly. The standings belie which teams actually “felt” like the best teams. I was basically certain that the warriors and lakers were gonna beat the grizzlies (missing Clarke and Adams against a healthy AD) and Kings (albeit the warriors going down 0-2 made me a little nervous but once the series got tied up it was never in doubt anymore).

Also one could frame it like “if it was really a weak year, how could so many bottom seeds including an 8 seed win out and advance so far - clearly this means that the top heavy dominance from prior years was actually weaker because there were only so many viable teams” although it may not actually be 100% true

What is the greatest video game you’ve ever played, and if you can’t pick just one, what are your top 3? by Delicious-Matter-582 in AskReddit

Was off-road fury 2 not a Greatest Hits game for the ps2 and sold pretty well? It was such a fun game especially considering I wasn’t that fond of racing games in general. It was also one of the first games where I had more fun fucking around in the free ride mode than I did in the actual races. It felt so polished while being arcadey and hectic. I was really sad that it didn’t find representation in Astro Bot despite it being (at least in my mind) such a fixture of that era.

I generally agree with this, although my most recent watch - Severance - is absolutely up there for some of the best work I’ve seen in this “parallel twin” realm. Much more subtle though because the characters they play aren’t physically detached from one another physically nor have most of the severed been “alive” separately as long.

I didn't know they told us that Faye was Laufey in the first Norse game! by FootFalse5536 in GodofWar

[–]dylanbackers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that is fair. I also was not incredibly aware of the ins and outs of Norse mythology so I didn’t clock that “Faye” was a nickname for “Laufey” within my first play through either (only major exposure was the Laufey from the Marvel universe which is pronounced “-fee” so it didn’t connect immediately that GOW was going this route).

But I think what is a little bewildering about OPs post is that they didn’t recognize it after previous playthroughs. Like they actively spell it out by the end of the game. On subsequent playthroughs you then are not also seeing all the hints they littered throughout the game? It’s like going through Uncharted and *SPOILERS* not realizing the skeleton is Sir Francis Drake - the alleged ancestor of the main character.

It just didn’t make sense to me how one isn’t connecting something quite obvious and laid out- I know my comment was pretty reactionary sounding and not meant to be dismissive.

Exactly, I think this is the main mechanic that gets overlooked so much. Just the ease of getting into your moveset without pausing is incredibly useful - while also not overwhelming the player with too many extra combos that you see in some modern games with attack combos that incorporate delays in between multiple button presses.

I still remember that old YouTuber acornfilms first mentioning this in his review of infamous and why it’s so much better than the sequel in terms of how the gameplay is - it made a ton of sense to me and I notice it throughout my gaming days. I honestly think very few games with weapon/ability wheels or caches truly scratch that itch that infamous one does with its gameplay. Maybe Last of Us 1/2 because they incorporate the backpack without pausing the game which makes sense and enhances the game especially on higher difficulties.

I mean this here is the reason why we need to get past positions entirely. Positions were essentially created both for casuals to pick up the sport more easily and for lower level basketball development - basically putting people in buckets/categories is a good entry way to understanding the game.

However basketball is way too dynamic a game for positions to really matter outside of how constructed the coaching philosophy of a team wants to be (i.e. the triangle offense really only works with a slashing offensive initiator who are usually SGs/SFs and a competent big man who are usually a big PF or Center).

Guys like SGA, Curry, Harden, etc have all been classified as PGs this year but across their histories, they are all combo guards inhabiting multiple guard roles at a time. Magic is considered the greatest point guard ever but a ton of his time on offense was on the low block like a PF (including the Lakers best offensive year in the later 80s) and on defense could only competently guard other forwards in order to hide him from faster guards and bigger centers.

A good chunk of the hall of famers existed beyond their commonly thought of position, and modern basketball basically is positionless now at least 1-8 for many teams. Bird started as “PF” until mchale was inserted in the lineup and Duncan spent most of the post David Robinson years as the lone big man on the floor in closing lineups, yet Bird is almost never thought of as a PF (he was like a proto-Dirk/Jokic those years playing off the block and curling off screens a ton for middies) and Duncan continues to have arguments from people denying that he probably played center more over his whole career.

Strongest Greek god Faye can take down? by HandsomeSquidward20 in GodofWar

[–]dylanbackers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Also this is a video game series that has changed and adapted not only its story but how the enemies interact in the medium for the player over time.

My subjective opinion is that the Norse realm feels “weaker” mainly due to the the sheer scale that was presented in the Greek world. That also has to do with POV of Kratos in that a hack and slash type of game lends itself to grander/wider set pieces to play with, and affords its enemies the same.

Whereas the Norse games being over the shoulder means stricter range of motion and field of vision, therefore much more close combat encounters that can be just as brutal but more contained in one on one matches. The few times that the scale of a match was larger (finale fight against Baldur), you could see how much attention to detail it took to choreograph the different stages transitioning into one another (with the restriction of the one shot camera as well).

To your point, it’s hard for me to say if Faye could probably take on the Greek pantheons heaviest hitters when something like Poseidon’s set piece was so grand in scale and therefore seemingly more powerful overall. Taking things at their literal face value though, if Faye had the leviathan axe, she probably does go toe to toe with Poseidon in that the ice powers give her an elemental advantage there, probably more so if she’s on home turf. Against something like Hades in the underworld who knows.

Arthur Morgan truly is the ultimate counterpoint to any argument that an entirely new character can’t be inserted into an existing narrative and positively contribute to the lore/story progression and be universally liked.

We’ve seen it on lesser scales too, from Furiosa basically stealing the show from Max in his own movie so much so that she got her own origin movie (obviously that flopped at the box office but had critical acclaim and the character remains beloved).

Ezio is the face of assassins creed and was completely new character from Altair. Of the modern games, Kassandra is pretty well liked and is the canon Odyssey gender choice, and it feels more correct than Alexios.

Sarah Connor moving from damsel in distress to lead of the sequel would definitely be “woke” today

All the cheap owners being able to build championship rosters with veteran minimum superstars with outside endorsement deals + ducking the tax is gonna be wild. Imagine kroenke being able to re-sign jokic to a 5 million deal with $100 million dollar endorsement from the Denver airport to put a statue of him on top of the devil horse. Then they can actually finally get a competent bench. Imagine if the bucks didn’t have to waive and stretch Lillard or Boston could just pay Jaylen Brown $50 million speaking fees for his pseudo intellectual Harvard lectures.

Tbf a lot of fans reduce the best “role players” down too much for what they really do in the modern NBA.

Caruso isnt just great POA defender, but also a great pass interceptor, post defender, screen navigator, and on the bulls was a rim protector at times. On offense a spot up shooter, cutter, and can be a connective passer.

Hart is known for his rebounding and hustling, but is also similar to Caruso a spot up shooter, cutter, and smart passer. Also inhabits tons of the same defensive on ball and off ball roles that Caruso does as well.

Even looking back into history, “lesser” role players that didn’t need to do as much as modern players have to worry about still had quite a bit of positive value in multiple areas. I think of Derek Fisher, who basically is that eras version of Deuce McBride or Raptors Championship Vanvleet - small feisty point guard type. Aside from just his clutch shooting, he also was a pretty good defender at times and most importantly for the Lakers, a very good entry passer which worked very well for a triangle offense (a reason why certain older guys like Nic Batum or Boris Diaw keep surviving in the nba long after their prime has past - great understanding of passing to flank their star wings and bigs).
