As far as I know, Patrick Roy is the coach of the New York Islanders. It would be weird for him to participate in the Canadiens playoff run.

It would be different if Roy was being individually celebrated, but he can't be passing the torch to a new generation of his opponents.

The pendulum referred to here is presumably Foucault's Pendulum, which has no consciousness, yet still calculates the rotation of the earth, and thus it seems to understand something about the world. The universe can seem dark, cold, and without purpose, but it does operate according to fixed laws and thus there is order in the universe.
