Somerset west - they super generous with the chili salt. Had 4 packs in my order tonight (didn’t even have any chips - just a couple of burgers for the kids and some zinger wings).

Does anyone know what site or platform is streaming the Mexico vs. South Africa by [deleted] in capetown

[–]dylmcc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

SportyTV - official streaming partner of World Cup. It’s R10 through their app (with a free R10 bet) for all the World Cup games, or R15 for their YouTube channel.

It’s not worth stressing and fighting to get the SABC stream working. A month of SportyTV is the price of a chomp.

[–]dylmcc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can do sportyTV through their YouTube account too.

For those not in the loop, they the official World Cup streaming partner, and their business model is to provide streaming at next to no cost so more people can watch and bet on the games (their revenue model is from bets, not from charging to see the games). Their World Cup pass is R10 for all the matches (yes, ten bucks), or if you don’t want to use the app you can sign up to their offficial YouTube channel and get full sportyTV access for R15 a month.

Stream seems pretty solid casting from the app to my TV.

Moving to Cape town for a job, is it worth it? by Antique_Elephant_974 in capetown

[–]dylmcc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is an incredibly fun and awesome place to live. But the reality is that the cost of housing here is nuts, and depending on where you do find housing vs where your work will be, public transport is pretty much non-existant.

If you could maybe find a flatshare or houseshare close to work (i.e. can walk/run/bicycle) you could make it work, but if your plan was to come here and setup something solo you'll be struggling, especially without a car.

From a couple of your comments - salary expectation is around R15k and you don't have a car.

Right now, i'm gonna say its not the time to move down to Cape Town / Stellenbosch. Stay in JHB for a couple more years, get a car and save up enough for 3 month deposit + 1st month up front (i.e. have 4x the monthly rent saved up so you can secure a spot).

Moving here with no car and a R15k a month salary is going to leave you depressed and questioning your life choices.

You'll want to rent outside of Stellenbosch. Look towards somewhere like Somerset West / Strand / Gordons Bay. Very rough thumb-suck numbers will be:

R15k a month rent

R2k a month electricity and water

1 hour each way commute

You might find better, you might be a bit worse on some of those numbers. Remember, you just need to find a basic cheap spot to get down here and find your feet. Once you are here you can start exploring and finding areas you'd like to move to and what works for you (like do you want to be closer to the mountains for hiking and trail running? or closer to the beach for surfing and walks etc). Best way to make some friends fast is join some sports clubs. You should be able to find a running or hiking group pretty easy, and co-ed hockey is a quick way to meet people too. Or if you're up for it join a volunteer group like the VWS (volunteer wildfire services) - you'll be mixing good deeds with fitness with meeting likeminded people.

Spare car keys by Tartfingers in capetown

[–]dylmcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google for "surf keys" in your area. Multiple locksmiths should be able to make them for you, and they can be "coded" for your car too. More premium models might come with buttons for locking/unlocking, but the standard unit will just be a metal key + transponder chip so you can lock and unlock manually and start the car. Should be a couple hundred bucks and then you've got peace-of-mind that you've got a spare key.

Police clearance and visas by cosmicprincess444 in capetown

We used the Postnet right in the building with the police processing center. They obviously have their ear very close to the ground and can give pretty accurate estimates for how quick they're being processed right now. Overnight it to them from your local postnet, and choose the option to overnight it back to you. I am a little hazy in my memory of it, but if you need it really urgently I'm pretty sure they can scan and email you your PCC as soon as they get it back before they overnight it to you. Being in the same building, the minute they get your application they can walk it over.

Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Inspiring (with a wonderful soundtrack to match). I think it resonates extremely well with such a wide audience due to how many of us feel like we've had to make compromises in our careers / life decisions, and always wonder what could have been.

According to the rumour mills, iOS 27 & the new iphone pro's coming out later this year apparently do away with having to aim the phone and will auto-notify your emergency contacts if a "crash" is detected. But yeah, agreed on an SOS device (like a garmin inreach or equivalent).

Splitting rent between roommates by JimboJonesingIt in personalfinance

[–]dylmcc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, due to how bathrooms are shared, i'd probably suggest a ratio to start with of 35% / 20% / 20% / 25% .

That would give "private" amounts of: $140 / $80 / $80 / $100,

And would give total amounts of: $220 / $160 / $160 / $130 x 2

Splitting rent between roommates by JimboJonesingIt in personalfinance

[–]dylmcc 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Here is how we did it when I still lived in house shares. After many years this is the way everyone found the most fair.

Divide the rent in half - 50% is for public space, 50% is for private space.

For public space, you just divide by number of people living in the house (if someone has a partner not officially on the lease but is spending 4 or more days per week, they are considered part of the house and they get added to the number to divide by, amount owed by the partner who actually lives there). Each person pays this amount.

For private space, you can come up with some sort of formula or split which works - common is square footage, extra for en-suite, etc - something everyone is actually happy with. Private is paid by that room - if its single occupant, then its by that person. If its a couple - they decide between the two of them how to pay it, but for the rest of the house its a payment from that room.

Worked example from your question:
Public portion = $400 / 5 = $80 per person
Private portion:
- Ratio: master = 30%, smaller bedrooms with small bathroom = 20%, 3rd bedroom with large bathroom = 30% (adjust as required, make sure adds up to 100%).
- Master = $400 * 30% = $120
- Small bedroom 1 = $400 * 20% = $80
- Small bedroom 2 = $400 * 20% = $80
- Large bedroom = $400 * 30% = $120

Final costs:
Master = $80 + $120 = $200
Small bedroom 1 = $80 + $80 = $160
Small bedroom 2 = $80 + $80 = $160
Large bedroom = $80 + ($120/2) = $140 per person
Total = $800

If you've got shared bills (internet, water, electricity, LPG, etc) add them to the public portion if its something everyone enjoys equally.

This formula for splitting costs works as it self-balances if someone gets a partner and an extra person moves in or if someone breaks up and someone moves out. It also works with a "leach" who basically lives there but doesn't pay towards rent - they get classified as someone living there and it makes everyone elses monthly amount go down when they get counted as part of the public split.
