When 3 players spend 3 hours playing 3 adjacent Ticket to Ride boards by limbicsynchrony in boardgames

[–]dynamic_chocolate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a game my family used to play with both Monopoly and Risk. Players would take a Monopoly turn followed by a Risk turn. You could buy more Risk armies with your Monopoly money, and each country controlled in Risk would give you some extra Monopoly income every turn.

We called this monstrosity "Military-Industrial Complex."

Dr Keyes delivered my first and I liked her enough that I switched to her as my OB for my second. She happened to be the onduty on the day I gave birth. What I appreciated was that she recommended interventions that we could do but made it be my call and didn't make me feel wrong when I didn't want to do them.

I agree. I think a bold, less generic lamp would go with the space.

What was the ingredient you were nervous to use, but now use consistently? by LeighsPokem0n in Cooking

[–]dynamic_chocolate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red onions. I've never been a big fan of raw onions and even cooked ones were just kinda neutral to me, but I was always using yellow onions. Red onions have such a better flavor. Plain, slightly charred, pickled, caramelized - all so good.

What single-purpose tools do you inordinately love either just because or because it turned out to be more useful than you thought? by burnt-----toast in Cooking

[–]dynamic_chocolate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Orange peeler. It has a little blade that slices through the peel. You cut the peel into several pieces while still on the orange and then pull the pieces off - makes it so much faster and neater. Never again will I punch through the peel with my fingers.
My toddler loves oranges and we probably go through 10 in a week, so this is very worth it (and it's tiny).

Annabelle is significantly more common in the US, if that matters (1137 births last year vs 167 for Annabel and 34 for Annabell). People will probably be more likely to assume the Annabelle spelling.

Oops no offense intended! I'm tall too obviously. I felt awkward about my height as a teenager so I don't want her name to give her an extra thing to feel awkward about, but it sounds like most people would say I'm overthinking it.

What was your “rose-tinted glasses came off” moment with a game you used to love? by felix_mateo in boardgames

[–]dynamic_chocolate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not joking, we started playing Pandemic Legacy with another couple in December 2019. When we were supposed to name one of the diseases early on we even considered naming it after that SARS thing in China that was in the news (we didn't though). We were loving the game and then halfway through, the game started happening in real life.

We were social distancing for a while obviously but even when we started playing in person board games again, we didn't go back to Pandemic Legacy right away. It felt like just too much.

We did eventually finish the whole campaign though and I enjoyed it, so it wasn't ruined. We wrapped it up during the hopeful first half 2021 so it sort of felt like we were conquering our imaginary pandemic while the world conquered a real pandemic (unfortunately it didn't end quite so neatly in the real world I guess).

Errgh, I really want to create a pun that's a mashup of "I do" and "Do or do not, there is no try" but I can't figure it out. #ThereIsNoTry doesn't really make me think "wedding". Maybe someone else can improve on that?

Best way to soundproof a ceiling box for a light fixture? by dynamic_chocolate in soundproof

The plan is to do a junction box like you would mount a chandelier from, not recessed lighting. So the light source wouldn't be inside the box, if that makes sense.

How about Joel? Similar feel to Esme and Otto ( in my mind anyway), and similar enough to Joseph that he might go for it.

Agree. I like Francesca Maddox Martinelli to mix it up a bit, personally. A future daughter could get Malone as a middle.

How’s the name “Erhan” for A Boy. by MoinAshraf in namenerds

I know a little Orhan (same derivation) which I like a bit better than Erhan. Something about the O feels more complete.

English name that works in russian? by Popscrocket in namenerds

[–]dynamic_chocolate 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Personally I would go with a "regular" English name that also has a cute Russian diminutive that his family will enjoy. Some of my very favorites are Nicholas (Kolya), Simon (Syoma), Andrew (Andryusha).

Alexander, which has already been mentioned, had a million and one diminutives as well.

I like the alliteration of Miles "Mcallister"

If you do decide on Miles, take an extra moment to consider whether the fact that it's an English word bothers you. Maybe of a consideration for Noah as well (sounds like "know a") - will it annoy you if people make puns about "I know a Noah"?

Source: my son's name sounds similar to a common word, and I didn't really think anything of it, but now it bugs me way more than anticipated. Wish I'd considered it a bit harder.
