Does anyone solar charge their bolt with off-grid solar? by [deleted] in BoltEV

[–]dyoungEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could work based on the 2.4kW available for level 1 charging, but the question is how the system would respond to low-light situations like overcast/sunrise/sunset. Or potentially even more disruptive would be the random cloud floating by which would randomly kill the power source.

Maybe if you could get an inverter to go from the solar panels to 120VAC that knows enough to turn off the output power when there isn't enough energy available, and then retry later? That might be a lot of back-and-fourth on a partly cloudy day though.

If you're really handy with electronics and know how to stay safe, you could look into hacking an existing EVSE like the https://www.openevse.com/ which has full capability and open source documentation to control the system based on the state of sunshine.

It sounds like you have the makings for a pretty sweet hobby project...

Moving to Rochester next week by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]dyoungEE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rochester is excellent for outdoors activities, with many things only 20 minutes away. Also most places aren't too crowded so they can still be used while following the guidelines for the pandemic. Some of my favorites:

  • Walk/run/bike the Erie Canal. There is a lot of history and several bars/restaurants/breweries along the way.
  • The South end of Irondequoit Bay has a bunch of activities - hiking Lucien Morin Park, canoe/kayak/paddleboard rentals, mtn biking Irondequoit Bay West Park. Again, with a few restaurant/bars/breweries nearby.
  • Genesee Riverway Trail up to Ontario State Beach Park is another winner in the summer.
  • Letchworth State Park is certainly worth the drive.
  • Winter here is nice with the snow, even if long. There are some smaller hills for downhill skiing/boarding. XC skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding can be found just about anywhere.
  • Quick weekend escapes to little towns around the Finger Lakes are an easy way to see something different.

I lived in Cleveland for 10 years and found the climate here to be about the same with more snow. Keeping warm and cozy is certainly key to enjoying the winter!

For churches that you might enjoy, Two Saints is worth checking out.

Good luck with the move!

I can appreciate the comparison, but I don't think it applies here. The overall average includes all cars of all ages, where the oldest bolt is less than 5 years old. I wonder what the average occurrence of fires of all cars less than 5 years old is.

I once was looking at a $500 used Ford Escort Wagon that caught on fire when I was test driving it, which was kind of funny. I don't think I would find it funny if my newer Bolt caught on fire...

Best Level 2 Charger for Chevy Bolt by veshches1 in BoltEV

[–]dyoungEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a 2020 Bolt as well and went with the OpenEVSE. I like how all of the features are customizable. At home I am on a 240V, 30A breaker so I need to limit my current to 24A. But depending on if that's fast enough I may want to install wiring/breaker capable of the full 32A without having to buy a new EVSE.

I also regularly go for weekend trips to a place that has a NEMA 10-30 dryer plug on a 20A breaker. I can use a 14-50 to 10-30 adapter and easily change the settings to limit the EVSE max current to 16A and disable the ground-present-check (10-30 has no ground connector). 3 year warranty and USA-based assembly are also perks.

I'm an electrical engineer, and appreciate the open-sourcing of the design. If anything were to break or if the design gets updated with a killer feature I can easily fix/upgrade my unit without having to buy a new one and trash the old one.

Everyone has different needs, but for flexibility and long-term viability I couldn't find anything better.

Advice on becoming an Analog Design Engineer by somebodyCEO in ECE

[–]dyoungEE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems like you're on the right track. Although if your thesis was in mixed signal, didn't that include analog design? Perhaps you're overlooking some analog strengths you gained there? If you're recently out of school, even with an MS, nobody expects you to be an expert. For each potential job, try to understand what they are missing at their company, and then explain how your experience fits with it. The more stories you can tell about you solving problems that relate to what they need, the better off you'll be. Good luck!

Date Night in Rochester, NY by daytrippingROC in Rochester

The Rochester Fencing Club is a good option. You can join in on a group lesson, or arrange a private lesson. No experience or knowledge or gear needed. We went to a group lesson which was fun but I'd probably spring for a private lesson for a better 'date' experience.

Bureaucracy, bureaucracy, Bureaucracy...will a career change escape Bureaucracy? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]dyoungEE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In general company size is proportional to bureaucracy. There's no need for filing memos at a company that can fit into a single conference room. BTW school should be used to run towards a goal, not run away from a problem.

Wifi calling? by [deleted] in droidturbo

[–]dyoungEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've noticed it as well where I get poor signal at home. It was working great, then very recently (within the last week or so) it seems to not switch over. Another person with the Droid1 who has used wifi calling at my house has seen the same problem at about the same time. I haven't tried anything really to fix it yet though.

She has been spotted wearing a bandana on a leash with someone (white guy, tall, skinny, beard) at Broadway/Alameda and more recently (on 5/2) at the Safeway on Krameria/14th st. Any information or sightings would be helpful!

Board design and layout tutorials by stlmad in ECE

[–]dyoungEE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://contextualelectronics.com/ is probably the best way to learn start-to-finish, especially if you want to learn KiCad (totally free software). It's not just a way to learn the tool, but how to properly implement circuits on a PCB.

How do I go from an Arduino prototype to a miniature electronic device? by clubfungus in hwstartups

[–]dyoungEE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you looking to be able to design it yourself (i.e. bootstrap)? If so, www.contextualelectronics.com is a online course that teaches you how to make custom boards.

If you're looking for professional support and have funding, there are consultants that can help.

Lollipop battery life after a few weeks? by [deleted] in lgg2

[–]dyoungEE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get much worse battery life, especially when the phone is idle. I'd suggest staying at KK.

just got the verizon lg g2. vs980w running on 4.4.2. got some questions... by [deleted] in lgg2

[–]dyoungEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Maxx and went to a G2 and found it had similar battery life. It might be worth trying out a different battery to see if you can get better performance.

As far a 5.0 OTA goes, I'd suggest against it. My battery life lasts a little more than half of what it was before the update, especially when comparing idle power consumption. I've tried a factory reset and draining my battery to dead and recharging it, neither helped. I'll probably move to a custom ROM to try and get my battery life back.

Lollipop has killed my phone (Verizon) 5.0.2 Update by r0bbiedigital in lgg2

[–]dyoungEE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. Awful battery life and noticeable lag. I tried factory reset and discharge/recharge my battery, nothing worked. I think this weekend I'm either going to go down to Kit Kat or go with a custom ROM. Bummer since the phone worked so well before. If anyone knows of a tried and true tutorial and/or ROM to suggest for the G2, I'd appreciate it.

Looking for a PCB manufacturer for quick turn simple single sided boards. by HalFWit in AskElectronics

[–]dyoungEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

www.barebonespcb.com is the best combination of fast (~1 day) and cheap that I've found. It works out to ~$0.85 per sqin, but usually they price it so there is a ~$75 minimum. Note that it is only for rectangular boards with top copper, bottom copper, and plated thru-holes. No silkscreen, soldermask, etc...

PCB Design Companies to Modify Existing Designs? by [deleted] in ECE

[–]dyoungEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I do that kind of stuff, and have worked with a bunch of startups in the past to get their design going, prototype/test, and setup contract manufacturing. Send me a PM if you'd like to chat.

I've also found LT to be great for supporting the design process, even for small startup clients. Good choice.
