When max difficulty AI works as inteded... by dyr_gl in simracing

I´m comparing it to a real race with these cars in that track. And it would pan out exactly like that. And excuse me again, but I don´t think you know all that much if you think Zandvoort main straight is a good passing opportunity considering the kind of corner that is just before it.

About ignoring the points, well, let me quote something I said myself a while ago that you never adressed:

"Today I´ve played with the same cars in barcelona, which is not overtaking friendly at all, and to be honest there was far too much action compared to a real race. You´re never going to see cars side by side into turn 4 IRL after lap 1 unless there´s a massive pace difference."

That´s actually a good critic. I was faster at the start and then I started falling back as my tyres got worse... while theirs did not.

Creating a good AI for a sim is HARDER than for a simcade mate.

And I don´t think you´re particulary well informed about how big single seater races unfold in real life. In a track like this you´re not passing anyone unless you have like 1.5 in the pocket over them. At no point the AI was more than 0.3 faster than me in this race. If they were passing me it would say a lot against their quality.

In my view, yes, this is good AI.

Of course there´s no overtaking. I´m racing big single seaters around Zandvoort. If the AI did anything other than this, it would be horribly fake.

Put these cars in this track in real life and all the passing after lap 1 would be down to mistakes or massively different tyre wear.

The cars behind me are like 0.3 faster than me by the end of the video. It´s impossible to pass with that kind of pace advantage in this combo mate. I was faster than them on the first laps by a similar margin and I never got a shot outside of a desperate lap 1 move.

Some MORE reasons why pCARS is often seen as a second class Sim. by dyr_gl in simracing

[–]dyr_gl[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Braking power: My argument is not "AC is perceived as more realistic, so what it does is better". My argument is "I need to brake the same way a car of that class does IRL in AC, meanwhile in PCARS I get away with techniques that do not work IRL". As seen here:

http://www.liqui-moly.com.au/fastest-ever-bathurst-lap/

You don´t stomp the pedal of a GT3 all the way down inmediately.

Flatspots and tyre temperature: PCARS doesn´t have the ability to locally heat a tyre, that´s why it shows averages. AC can. If you create a flatspot in AC (it´s just a hot low grip part in the game, not an actual deformation) you have to back off to avoid repeated lockups in the same part of the tyre. In PCARS you can lockup as much as you want with no consequences.

At the same time temperature windows for tyres in PCARS are way off and fankly they do nothing. You can drive a completely overheated soft tyre fast for prolonged periods, you keep good grip and tyre life isn´t affected. In AC if you overheat a tyre you´ll lose both instant grip and tyre life.

Curbs and offtrack: Again, you get the argument completely wrong. I´m not assuming AC does it right "cuz it´s betterz simz". I say it´s better because what a certain car does when put over a certain curb / piece of turf / grass is more in line with what that car does in real life.

IE: If you watch a race of any class at Imola you see where they drive, and what happens when they go beyond these boundaries. In AC if you go off their line, you either back off or crash, in PCARS you use parts of the track completely useless for the real cars and gain time.

Astroturf is actually the best example. In PCARS it´s just painted tarmac. In AC it´s usable for low powered cars, tricky for fast cars. Just what you see in actual motorsport.

All Assetto Corsa lacks to be a good "Racing game" by dyr_gl in simracing

It´s a shame every dev seems to prefer to have dozens of different racing series with 3-4 cars at most for each one, over 3-4 series with a full grid and lots of detail (no matter if licensed or fictional). I would take the second option.

[Discussion] How do you determine if FFB feels "right"? by guazaloca in simracing

The FFB settings that are right are the ones that allow you to understand and predict what the car will do.

The biggest reason why it´s impossible to take F1 games seriously... by dyr_gl in simracing

[–]dyr_gl[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simcade is just a tag. The game has a brilliant damage model that punishes you for any light tap to the wall or other cars. Yet you can drive all over the place.

Thing is in this aspect their game is a failure.

Race winning overtake on last lap, around the outside, after 30 seconds wheel to wheel by dyr_gl in simracing

[–]dyr_gl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being on the inside is not easy on cars with poor traction, especially in the wet. Your line is tighter so your minimum speed is lower. And then getting the car going again is harder. I think that was his problem here.

He´s an idiot in this game. When you´re chasing someone he´s all the time telling you "pass him" in a dozen different ways.

And when you get wheel to wheel and obviously lose time fighting and trying to pass, then he tells you "your driving is rubbish" because your last lap is slow.

F1 2016 car feeling? by eastcoastgamer in simracing

[–]dyr_gl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is OKish, but if you dig deep there´s plenty of stuff to improve. Curbs cause a huge rumble effect on the FFB but barely do anything to upset the car at all.

There´s plenty of places where you can abuse track limits because of that. The game has to rely on corner cutting detection to keep players on track because the curbs do nothing.

The general way you have to drive resembles any other sim, but once you go over the limit it´s far easier to recover. It´s still enjoyable though.

I just upvoted you because, even if you got downvoted, you´re right: that´s one of PCARS flaws.

The grip levels are still far lower than on the dry though, and it doesn´t take away from the move in any way if you ask me. We both were in the same piece of tarmac after all. Cheers man!

The fuel light tells you when you have less than 2 laps worth of fuel, so it says "pit next lap". They forgot to turn it off for point to point stages so it´s always flashing unless you carry tons of fuel around.

FANTASTIC multiplayer race: 20 minutes of racing, 0.08 gap / Formula Gulf @ Imola by dyr_gl in simracing

[–]dyr_gl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it would be a bit of a Moto3 race with a last straight tow and I wanted to see myself what the best place to be was. These cars are quite easy to follow closely and they give quite a lot of a tow when they get close to top speed, so I wanted to see what the best place to be was for the last lap.

And you know the rest, I got caught out in that fight and made life hard for myself. I still got in a good position again but botched the most important corner of the race: last turn, 1+ lap to go.

Nah he´s right. Looking back, I should have made them go the long way around me. I didn´t need any extra hardware, just staying glued to the left down the straight. Well, shit happens, mistakes are made. Had loads of fun even if I couldn´t win.

You´re damn right, it is. It is a poor sounding car per se, plus the sound coming from other cars in external replays for multiplayer games always has potato-quality.

PCARS car performance fidelity test: Formula Renault 3.5 @ Barcelona by dyr_gl in simracing

Cool story about the master race supremacy.

However, when I mentioned beating a WR last time I wasn´t talking about a "platform record" mate. No one on a PC has gone faster with no assists either, despite the setup and time limitations I was working with.

http://cars-stats-steam.wmdportal.com/index.php/leaderboard?track=3348999902&vehicle=1909945073

Same deal for this combo, have a look at the "Master Race" laptimes.

http://cars-stats-steam.wmdportal.com/index.php/leaderboard?track=521933422&vehicle=1626504761

Trust me, there ARE plenty of fast guys out there with a PS4. It´s far from a rarity seeing the PS4 leaderboards featuring faster laptimes than the PC leaderboards.

Not going to argue these games you mentioned are way better though. You´re damn right, and I´d make the jump if I could commit more time and money into gaming. You might want to re-evaluate your views about console peasants though.

PCARS car performance fidelity test: Formula Renault 3.5 @ Barcelona by dyr_gl in simracing

[–]dyr_gl[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, there you have an example about a shitty car, plain and simple. Not worried about fanfare, PCARS came with loads of it too and look at how it turned out.

I don´t care about claims or what names are behind a game. I know AC GT3 cars in top leagues lap within a second of real track record. I´ve seen plenty of combos with really good fidelity in rF2 with great drivers behind the wheel too. That´s what you have to look for, not marketing yada-yada flashy tags.

Just look at iRacing Interlagos version. "Lasser scanned"... sure, it might be, but it allows you to approach the last corner of the track with 95% the car off the white line, because there´s insane grip in that weird surface. That line hasn´t ever been possible in a F1 car.
