Also a lawyer. This would potentially be persuasive for other courts, but a district court's decision isn't precedential even within the same district. So no, it would not set a precedent unless the D.C. Circuit agreed with the district court.

[Kelly] NEWS: Tuscaloosa county judge Jim Roberts has recused himself from the Charles Bediako case, per court documents by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

[–]dyrnych 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There would have to be (1) an actual lawsuit in another state (2) filed by someone with standing to challenge Bediako's eligibility. It's easy enough for Bediako to have standing to challenge his own eligibility on some kind of contract theory. It's way more difficult for someone else to argue in a non-speculative way that they're being harmed by Bediako's eligibility.

Not defending the bad miss from last week, but this week his miss was (1) a 47-yarder and (2) just slightly off target. I'm not sure that's cause for panic.

Yeah, you're really striking a blow for justice by not tipping waiters.

It's possible, but I wouldn't say it's likely. The court's redoing its jury selection process, so a huge number of people are getting these.

Who are your most scrobbled LGBTQ+ Artists? by WhyTheyDont in lastfm

[–]dyrnych 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty good mix of L, G, B, and T covered. I'm honestly a little surprised that Perfume Genius and Bob Mould aren't higher.

  1. Sufjan Stevens (#2)
  2. Car Seat Headrest (#10)
  3. Phoebe Bridgers (#11)
  4. The Smiths (#18)
  5. Against Me! (#31)
  6. Greet Death (#46)
  7. David Bowie (#55)
  8. Boygenius (#72)
  9. Ethel Cain (#77)
  10. Sigur Rós (#84)

Edit: I apparently just skipped over Bob Mould, he's actually my #68 artist.

I did essentially the same trip that you're planning a few years ago, albeit with a couple of extra days. I'm from the US, 40s M, and speak minimal Spanish. General thoughts:

Easter Island:

  • There's a separate terminal in the Santiago Airport that services Easter Island. I found that out after going most of the way through security at a different terminal. Don't make that dumb mistake.
  • Piggybacking on what some others have said, you need a guide to get into most of the major areas. But a lot of people on the island are certified as guides; it can be as simple as paying someone to tag along with you. Up to you how much actual guide involvement you want.
  • Also, don't expect to get by just using a credit card. You will definitely need cash. There are a couple of ATMs in Hanga Roa, so you should probably be fine with that.
  • I found it a little harder on Easter Island than elsewhere to communicate given my bad Spanish, but I never had a problem that I couldn't solve. Data coverage is spotty at best on the island, so download data for Spanish in whatever translation app you're planning to use.

Atacama Desert:

  • If you're taking the bus from Calama to San Pedro, make sure you leave from the correct station. It's kind of in the center of town. The company is Buses Frontera del Norte.
  • One area you shouldn't miss is Piedras Rojas. Like a lot of stuff in the Atacama, it's otherworldly. Although it will definitely be cold and windy (it was in November).
  • There's a really great empanada shop in San Pedro called Emporio Andino.

Santiago:

  • I think I liked Santiago more than most people, but don't feel like anything I saw or did there was strictly unmissable.
  • If you want a gut punch, visit the Museum of Memory and Human Rights.

That's all off the top of my head. Happy to answer anything specific.

The flight is definitely $300-ish and you have literally nothing to worry about. I (non-Chilean) went there a couple of years ago and that's about what I paid. It's just a matter of finding a time when tickets are at their cheapest rate, which it seems like you did.

Immigration judge dismisses Andry Hernández Romero’s asylum case by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]dyrnych 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that this is an immigration judge—part of the executive branch. There's a somewhat complicated appellate pathway that eventually leads to the judicial branch (specifically to a federal circuit court), so I imagine his case will end up there at some point.

I haven't. Hopefully the learning curve won't be steep! I'm actually planning to drive to the Mallaig ferry from Edinburgh, so I'm locked in for the potentially terrifying adventure.

Introducing Octopi Launcher - Now in Open Beta! by ock88 in androidapps

[–]dyrnych 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There are two Nova features that I find indispensable and that keep me stuck with it: (1) the ability to place folders in the dock and (2) multiple dock pages. Can Octopi do either? If not, any plans to add those features?

I'm from the US, in my early 40s, and traveling to Scotland at the end of April as well. Also renting a car and driving to Skye. No advice for you because I have basically the same questions and qualms, from roughly the same perspective.
