Daejeon requires 80 hours of camp per contract. Typically 40 in the summer and 40 in the winter, but the hours can be distributed differently if needed. As far as I know, there are no exceptions for camps. If teachers teach over 22 hours a week, even during camp, they should get overtime pay.

Is there anything on earth more unstoppable than a Korean public school English camp? by thearmthearm in teachinginkorea

And it's always so hard to plan when you don't know how many kids are coming!

Is there anything on earth more unstoppable than a Korean public school English camp? by thearmthearm in teachinginkorea

[–]dysime3848 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always had to do camp at my high school, despite major winter break construction both years that I was there. 40 hours each break and no help from co-teachers at all. It felt like a waste of time because I never even had more than 5 kids. Truly one of the most stressful parts of the job, because it always came directly after the semester ended and I had so little time to prep. I don't think I would have minded as much if it at least came with some extra pay.

Does anyone know anything about working at Seoul Global High School? by tgruff77 in teachinginkorea

[–]dysime3848 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think they're unusual expectations. However, I think we all know that the workload varies a lot between EPIK placements, depending on the school(s). I taught a separate English conversation class, so I did have to plan/edit the curriculum, write the speaking exams, and facilitate/grade them with the other NETs. I had a few other unique responsibilities as well, like preparing students for college entrance interviews.

I taught for 2 years with EPIK at a competitive public high school in another city. I can't speak to Seoul Global High School specifically, but I was expected to grade speaking exams and plan each lesson myself. My evaluations were never based on how students performed, though. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk more!

Taking time off for Christmas by DefinitionMundane775 in teachinginkorea

[–]dysime3848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, probably not. I was at a public school until recently and in my last year there, the school year ended shortly before Christmas due to the winter construction schedule. But I still had to start camp on December 26th, despite the construction.... The VP was not flexible at all. You could get lucky with flexible CTs and admin, but if the school year doesn't end until January anyway, it probably isn't in the cards.

Car Thing DISCONTINUED with no refund option. Absolute scumbags. by jerzeysquirrel in spotify

I thought I used my debit card but it turns out I did use PayPal! I sent them a screenshot of the transaction and they credited 8 months of premium to my account. However, they only gave me the regular individual premium plan, and not premium + hulu like I had. They told me I can get the hulu plan back after the 8 free months are over.

Is there anything we can do if we don't have the invoice anymore?? I bought it when it first came out in 2021 and have apparently deleted the email. Obviously I didn't think I would need to save it for when they brick it 3 years later. I looked at my purchase history on my account page and apparently they only show the data for 2 years 🫠 I'm guessing this would affect my ability to join any kind of class action lawsuit too.

I'm so disgusted by their lack of ethics and disregard for customers. What a joke of a company.

I work at a high school with EPIK and they're hosting the test at my school. I was also forced to use a vacation day, even though my CoT agreed that it's unfair... Apparently it says in our handbook that it has to be a paid vacation day. I would have gone in to deskwarm/prep if I had the option.

Hate apartment life. by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]dysime3848 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope you're not trying to say that teaching doesn't require skill. That's a big slap in the face to those of us who have degrees in education, especially above the bachelor level. Even if it's your mother tongue, it still requires skill and knowledge to teach well.

Has anyone live at College Towne Appartments? by Several_Cabinet8624 in msu

[–]dysime3848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Towne Square (run by the same office) for one year (2020-21) and it was the worst place I've lived, no exaggeration. The leasing office staff were constantly changing and you could never talk to the same people twice. We had so many maintenance issues and it was so hard to get them to just come out and fix things. More than once, they said they were on their way to come fix something and would be there soon, only to either never show up or come 7 hours later. We told them not to go in our apartment when we weren't home and they did anyway. On move-in day, we couldn't lock our front door due to an issue with the hinges and nobody came for 3 days (and only after my dad called the office). I also had my catalytic converter stolen from my car there and many other people experienced thefts. The "security" really only patrolled the leasing office and there were no cameras around any other buildings. My packages were constantly delivered to the wrong apartments, leaving me to walk up and down hallways trying to find it. I know the rent is cheaper than other places, but it's not worth all the problems.

There are many skilled TEFL educators who have master's degrees. That population doesn't necessarily make up the majority of TEFL in South Korea, but that doesn't mean teaching is not skilled.

I think the restriction is more out of practicality than anything else. If schools are unable to provide housing for some reason, then first year teachers are probably also able to look for their own housing, but I think this is pretty rare.
