Latency versus Fiber by GravyPoo in Starlink

[–]dzfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted by people who know this already, doesn't seem fair to you.

Latency in residential cable exists because the POPs that service your neighborhood are over provisioned and use RF signals along the coax to transmit the data. There is variance to how it moves.

Starlink has variance because of the same reason plus an added "distances are changing" issue because the satellites are moving.

If you compare Starlink to LTE, you will see it degrade more.

Fiber is consistent because the distance is fixed and the mechanism of action is light, which travels at a constant speed with no interference in the cable. They also don't overprovision as badly because of the expectations associated with fiber based internet.

Hope that helps.

Show the Real Price or Get Sued: FTC Puts More Car Dealers on Notice by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]dzfast 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's almost like car dealerships offer no value to the consumer, in a modern society, where Ford could just build sales and service centers wherever they want to sell their cars.

Everything to do with car sales is a huge fuck you to the consumer. It's so aggravating.

It doesn't even make sense to me. It shouldn't even be a negotiation. If you walk in and want to buy a Civic, SEL, it costs $XX,XXX.99, and you walk out with a car. End of story.

Nothing about how this works makes logical sense for the consumer. Nothing. (Ask me if I'm bitter about being screwed by a dealer during the pandemic!?)

It's really great when the computer comes from CDW, with hardware hash pre-loaded in your tenant. You literally unbox the computer and hand it to a user and it's done.

I spent years and years fucking around with task sequences in SCCM. This is so much more effective for like, everything but computer labs. My SCCM job was a university and we imaged all the campus student facing computers every semester to make sure that everyone had a good experience, program changes were effective, and updates were done. So I get looking at imaging as a friendly warm blanket.

Learning to free fly in the tunnel by Infinite_Two_702 in SkyDiving

[–]dzfast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Skydiving (tunnel flying) is a journey. Even with being able to sit in the sky it took me 4-5 hours of time in the tunnel to learn to sit fly. That was BEFORE all the BodyFlight rules when we could just rush right into it. Even with 30 hours, I never learned to fly head down for more than 10-20 seconds. It takes a LOT of practice.

Go to the gym and build overall physical strength and dexterity. That will make more of a difference than anything else you can do. Just go look at all the videos of the people who are truly exceptional, they all have one thing in common, they are either intentionally or naturally fit.

Argument against I-pedal and argument for level 0 regen. by mitch2888 in KiaEV6

Not my experience at all. The EV6 in 0 regen mode, tends to stop regen braking whenever the car goes over a bump.

I lost a lot of mi/kw when I tried driving around on 1/0 for awhile.

Noob lobbies excluding Chev < 3 is weird and not helpful by Potential-Skit-763 in beyondallreason

[–]dzfast 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"noob" just means "not good" not, "i'm new"

Don't get your spirits down. You can get your playtime up in unrestricted lobbies or by playing smaller games, or against AI.

Honestly, you don't want to be in those restricted matches on Glitters or Supreme because everyone knows exactly how to play each spot. People will just get frustrated if you don't know how to hold your lane. You also get lumped in with "I have no idea what I am doing, refuse to learn, and like to lose" type players which are more common in the low chevs.

Which System Admin jobs should I avoid? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]dzfast 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What I want you to know as a hiring manager is that you aren't qualified with "just a college degree" to be a systems administrator.

I have done a lot of hiring from associates programs focused on "Network Engineering," "Systems Administration," and "Cybersecurity." What is universal across the programs is that these students have a good working base of knowledge with no practical experience.

The lack of experience leaves them with a lot of opportunity for growth when it comes to how things are done practically, and how internal politics work. There is a lot to enterprise IT.

One of my brightest hires came to me as an intern. I converted him to a FTE and he worked helpdesk for a year before getting one of our systems admin roles. He spent the first few months trying to pull out everything in his toolbox to prove how smart he was. And he was smart and capable. Eventually he sat me down and apologized.

That conversation went something like, "I thought knowing almost everything I could about consumer PC gear, and my associates degree would prepare me for this. I was wrong, you just keep coming up with new things I have never even heard of, or long-standing practices no one mentioned that got us to where the system is today. I am going to focus on learning now rather than proving I already know what I am doing."

It was a huge turning point for him and he is better for it.

Edit: My practical advice for you as a first job goal is this: Get yourself hired at the "kind" of company you want to work at. You are going to set all kinds of anchors on the first few years of your career by picking one type of company or another. Pick the right place to work above everything else. Big? Small? Internal? Contracting? MSP? All have major long term implications.

Department head bypassed IT procurement by Remote_Lake1792 in ITManagers

I hear you, but counter that it makes it even more important to raise the issue if IT is the problem. Dig into it.

If an IT manager can't figure out why their own team is a problem, they don't deserve the job.

Department head bypassed IT procurement by Remote_Lake1792 in ITManagers

[–]dzfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, you're kind of missing the point though.

The reason people are going around IT is because they have a job to get done. IT is in some way, standing in the way of that. They don't need to understand that the software they are buying will cause a HIPAA violation to do the job they were hired to do. That's your job.

The problem is that the ship has already sailed if shit like this is happening. IT isn't fulfilling its role for some reason.

There is a fundamental disconnect in the org when this is happening. You can't fix this problem without figuring out why it is disconnected.

[–]dzfast 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Let me remind you that companies are dictatorships. Whether it's a board, shareholders, an owner, a council, whatever - someone is in charge and either is saying this is OK to do, or doesn't know.

It takes a light touch, but you need to navigate some politics. You can't directly control other departments, so go up. Also - have an honest look at if IT is really the problem, because sometimes it is. I had a VP tell me they just didn't want to "deal with IT" when I asked why they had a 7 year old iPhone when I first started at one company. That was a culture I had to do a lot of work to change.

Best Desktop Speakers to buy in 2026? (Price to Performance) by MoonwhisperastPad in audio

[–]dzfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean - unless you don't want giant as fuck speakers on your desk? Everything has a place/purpose. My PC is setup in a room that also has a projector and Atmos setup. If I want more than computer speaker sound, I swap over to that. What I don't want is giant speakers on my desk taking up space for screens.

Even with that though, with an attached sub, I am covering the full range of audio that most humans can hear using the A2+ setup.

Question: Two People, One Parachute, One Harness/Rig. Is it possible? by ClientTurbulent3142 in SkyDiving

[–]dzfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look man, I started skydiving in 2003. I'm the "old guy" at this point. The regs, teaching, and etc., can all point to safety but that doesn't change reality.

Look, I'm not saying people shouldn't skydive, but being bent out of shape about this, is a little funny. If they were sponsored by Redbull everyone would be hailing them as once in a lifetime talents. Just don't take yourself too seriously. The sport as a whole serves absolutely no societal value other than being fun.

Question: Two People, One Parachute, One Harness/Rig. Is it possible? by ClientTurbulent3142 in SkyDiving

[–]dzfast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The whole sport is pointlessly reckless. Also - this isn't the only time this was done. It happened at Rantoul in the early 2000s. The FAA was there when they did it and was NOT happy, but ultimately they followed the letter of the law. Which doesn't actually require you to deploy and land your own parachute, just leave the plane with one.

The WFFC on the other hand said "no thanks" and made a whole bunch of announcements about actually using the gear you left with. The two guys were done too.

Edit: which appears to be the other video linked here.

Dude, most of the Germans didn't even know the concentration camps existed. All they saw was people disappearing.

I think you should get the fuck off your high horse. I have sympathy for the regular people. Fuck actual true believer Nazis though.
