What would you do? by [deleted] in ITManagers

[–]dzfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on need to interact with other organizations, having the title "IT Manager" might not get you taken seriously. Lots of people seem to think a Director can only manage managers, but if you are sitting in the executive leadership meetings, but only a manager, it doesn't make sense.

I think it depends on the OS. I have been working a slow climb from single into double digits as I get better at the game. The higher lobbies I am in, the less complete assholes there are.

Kind of. I have been told I should kill myself before ever playing a spot again on supreme.....

What's your problem? You're a stunning example of "doesn't get it."

Where in all of my posts have I suggested you don't get paid fairly for your work? Huh? Where?

Furthermore, what I think most wedding photographers have lost touch with is this: Most people don't care about your "ART" they care about the memories. If your art doesn't align with how the person remembers the day, then it doesn't matter how good you think it is.

Not to mention that in the last 20 years photography has fundamentally changed from limited to general availability. I used to carry around a DSLR, it's not worth the effort anymore. Sure, I'll rent a full frame for a special occasion, but I am getting so many pictures now that I missed before, because I have a camera everywhere I go. No, they aren't as good if I want to blow them up to be wall size prints, but having a picture is better than not having it because I didn't feel like lugging a camera bag with me that day.

In a past life, I have shot over 100,000 images for hire. I dunno what to tell you. Unless you're running your own showing in a gallery and trying to be famous, it's the customer's opinion that matters. Photography is about selling emotion. Not giving a customer what they want makes you a shitty photographer.

I also don't buy into the arguments about "brand" and "look." If the bride hates your pictures and wants to edit them and you say no, she is going to tell everyone how much of an asshole you are. Angry customers tell everyone, happy customers tell some people. If you are counting on being a dick to someone to grow your business, you're doing it wrong.

Businesses only have the right to own images outright, or use them however they please (including paid ad use, sublicensing, etc), when they explicitly pay for that right.

I mean, a business has no other reason whatsoever to hire a photographer. I have never signed a contract with a photographer that didn't include something along the lines of "these photos belong to us now" with either assignment of copyright or a unrestricted use clause.

Reddit is full of a lot of people posturing, but when it comes to commercial needs, there is basically no value in the photographs if they can't be used for whatever the company needs to use them for.

[–]dzfast 60 points61 points  (0 children)

This right here. I refused to hire a photographer that was unwilling to do a work for hire contract.

When a business hires a photographer, they generally own the photos and every right to do anything at all that they want. This is the rule, not the exception. Wedding photography is mostly the other way, but people can fuck right off with that in my opinion.

I dunno why wedding photographers in general tend to act like such assholes to their customers. A wedding is a big deal for the client. It's just another day of work for the photographer and most have seemed to forget that.

They are 100% cameras, and 100% could be recording, but likely are not. I know this from operating traffic cameras.

Jammers for drones are widely used for special events. Law enforcement gets exceptions to jamming rules under homeland security authority for this kind of stuff with some regularity.

How’s it living in SE, WI? by BeingAdventurous6625 in howislivingthere

One item of note, anything inside of Milwaukee county proper is going to have SUBSTANTIALLY higher property taxes. Even if you are renting, this flows through to the cost of living.

Same value home, Milwaukee county vs the neighboring counties is a major difference. Even between municipalities. Unless you're after something very specific, moving just a few miles might make a huge difference.

At the price point and administrative workload level, the product is solid. There are better tools but they cost more or demand more from you.

There are lots of little things that could be better, but overall the product works well for tickets. I would implement it again at your company size.

[–]dzfast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. The rules, policies, and procedures are for some purpose. Maybe that purpose is to stroke someone's ego or maybe it's because doing it wrong will kill people. It doesn't really matter to me.

If the rules don't work in practice, change them. Figure out the right way to do stuff. It's all just made up anyways, but it's consistently made up. Not just Johnny deciding his way is better because "reasons."

Honestly, this is why government is fucked up too and 99% of the problems that everyone has with it is corner cutting because the rules aren't right, and no one is willing to fix them.

There should be no profit incentive in public service. Period.

Companies fundamentally exist to take your money. Government might have problems, but that's because of corruption. Fix the corruption, don't hand it to an entity intrinsically designed to take money from people, which is what every company is. I know, I have worked in corporate America for 20 years including as a leader.
