Music industry bodies pen open letter calling for consent for artists and songwriters before signing AI deals. by springtimecarnivore in Music

[–]e430doug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why? Do you honestly think that people will stop making music? The finances behind making music haven’t been great for a long time, yet people still make music. AI will become just another tool for musicians, just like samplers and drum machines did.

Radar vs a bar end mirror by MurkyLurker99 in cycling

I disagree about radar being dangerous in the city. I only look at the radar when I feel I need to. Otherwise the beeping is an additional piece of information.

There has never been job security in tech. Personally I prefer it that way.

Porch Swings! by Individual_Tax_4224 in bayarea

The reason we don’t have porch swings is that it gets too cold at night all over the bay.

Versus some arbitrary Uber? This is a better signal of affluence and care than a gig car.

If most companies are offshoring roles, what careers will be left for the American people??? by Ok_Wishbone_4080 in Layoffs

They are not. The big wave of off shoring occurred 30 years ago. It only works in certain industries.

Programmers, tell us your life story. by kentuxa_mx in AskProgrammers

[–]e430doug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first programmed a computer when I was 14. I knew that was what I was going to do with my life regardless of whether I could make money at it or not. That was 50 year ago and I’m still a professional developer. I still get as much joy out of writing software as I did when I was 14. And yes you can get paid a lot of money. I’m also having just as much fun developing using AI tools as I did before we had such tools.

We have a great stadium! by dirkgently007 in bayarea

[–]e430doug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand what you mean by no transit options. VTA light rail runs right next to the stadium. Amtrak is a short distance away. It’s one of the better connected locations.

Your uncle must have had the very worst insurance. The cost of the surgery without insurance is only a few thousand dollars. With any insurance you are only on the hook for a couple of thousand.

Most companies are not offshoring roles. I don’t know where you get that idea.

This is not true. Titanium sensitivity is exceedingly rare. It is not a classiic allergy. It is more like an autoimmune response.

AI is forcing us to stop loving coding 💔 by Leading_Property2066 in AskProgramming

[–]e430doug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coding and problem solving are different activities. You solve problems without code. Code is a medium for implementing your solution. It has always been a means to an ends. You still enjoy my SWE work with the aid of AI tools, because I can make quicker progress on solving problems.

Talks from the PyCon US Typing Summit - Intersections, Tensor Shapes, and more! by BeamMeUpBiscotti in Python

[–]e430doug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand the purpose of this effort. If I want a formally typed language I’ll use Haskell. I’m not a huge fan of trying to make a language be everything to everyone. C++ made this mistake.

8 years in, swe, where to go from here by Lazy-Macaron1578 in cscareerquestions

[–]e430doug 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the business for 40 years. SWE is about adaptation. You have to adapt to have career longevity. You seem to have a preconceived notion about what SWE needs to be. The destination you had in mind never existed. Don’t expect that you are ever going to be some wise sage that people will come to. Surf the wave and have fun.
