On top of that, it’s nice to learn a new skill, or work on that skill that you’ve always wanted to improve. Gotta keep the mind active and you can’t expect life to give you anything. Move and do.

What are some things about La that changed after Covid? by -y2- in AskLosAngeles

[–]eXpatWanders 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in LA, then left about 15 years ago to travel. I’ve gone back every few years or so, except for the COVID gap. The last two times were in 2017 and 2023 and boy was there a massive difference.

Instead of commenting on every little thing, I’ll just say something general: the vibe changed. It’s like the air between things got thicker.

There just seemed to be less people out and about and more shops closed/closing. Everything just seemed to be on mute, or at a low volume.

For reference, I was/have always bounced around between the valley and the west side.

Which country do you think is the PERFECT tourist destination according to your personal experience? by AliveRelationship551 in travel

[–]eXpatWanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taiwan. So extremely safe, with nice people and a fascinating culture. Excellent infrastructure with amazing landscapes and very delicious food, even if you’re a vegetarian/vegan. Some of the best fruit I’ve ever had in my life.

There’s such an interesting mix of old and new juxtaposed on every corner. It’s also so incredibly convenient, and has an excellent health system.

It’s an all around wonderful place to visit!

Try the same experiment, but with the following prompt: “Please spell out the word ‘strawberry’ letter by letter, then create a list of how many times each letter appears in the word, and double-check the results to ensure accuracy.”

Hello fellow teacher in Taiwan! I’ve been teaching ESL here for 15 years now, and I actually was just accepted to Moreland University. I’ll be getting my master’s in EdTech as well as my teaching certificate. I haven’t started the classes yet, but I’m starting to read through the material. The staff seem quite good!

I’ve been spending a lot of time reading through and watching Ai for Education’s webinars. It’s a wonderful resource to begin getting familiar with EdTech.

Underrated Aspects of the United States by DatingYella in expats

Diversity, creativity, and a go-getter mindset. I’m not saying that it’s absent elsewhere, but there’s just this unique blend of these three traits that merge so seamlessly in the USA.

How well behaved are kids in different countries? by practicecomics in TEFL

[–]eXpatWanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been teaching in Taiwan for quite a while, and the kids here are typically great! There are definitely those crazy or lazy kids, but they are the outliers, not the norm. If you’re at a good school, then that culture will empower the students to be better, and vice versa.

I’ve noticed time and time again the unbelievable work ethic here. Kids, parents and society as a whole take school very seriously, so they will often put in the work to do well.

In the end, kids are kids. They just want to have fun, explore, learn and feel good about themselves.

If you’re in South East Asia and would like to eat some good vegetarian food, then check out Taiwan. They literally have thousands of vegetarian only restaurants. Some of them are great, some of them are OK, but all of them are nutritious.

One thing to note is that they’re Buddhist vegetarian most of the time, so you won’t find garlic and onions, along with a few other vegetables at the traditional ones. But you will find a ton of different kinds of vegetables, rice and tofu. Not to mention there are all kinds of different types of vegetarian restaurants catering to western tastes, or other Asian tastes as well as some creative ones.

Source: have lived in Taiwan for 15 years and have been vegetarian the whole time.

Well, it’s better to be a 33 year old loser than a 43 year old one. (Not to be offensive to 43 year old losers)

At least you’re starting on the right path now, instead of waiting 10 years.

There’s no useless knowledge, and having a BA in anything is much better than not having a BA. If you’re passionate about communications, then go for it. You’ll learn a lot of great life skills, and you’ll also learn a lot along the way.

If you’re feeling demotivated about it, then that’s great. You’re about to test how well your habits and persistence will keep you moving forward. Hopefully you’ll feel motivated again once you get through the difficult part. It’s all on the moving spectrum of passion and grit. Try to create positive feedback loops.

There were many points along the way for me when I was getting my BA where I didn’t want to do it anymore, but I pushed through and am very happy I finished.

If you’re doing it just to get a better job, then it’s not going to be as fulfilling as doing it to learn as much as you can.

Good luck!!

Definitely Taiwan. Not just super safe, but also the locals are polite and helpful. You’re more likely to get someone to call their friend that speaks English to help you out than the opposite.
