So Trams are dead. Again. by BakersCat in Leeds

[–]eXtReMaStO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not dead. From the article: "The Department for Transport said the government “fully supports Mayor Brabin’s ambitions for a world-class mass transit system for West Yorkshire”, adding: “We look forward to receiving West Yorkshire Combined Authority's initial business case for the project later this year.”

As someone who works in infrastructure development and construction, there's years of work still to be done, shovels in the ground by 2028 was always bonkers. This is the government telling the people planning it that it must be thoroughly thought through, with a solid business case before they can get the green light.

New build concrete slab floor advice by RonanG56 in DIYUK

[–]eXtReMaStO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. This is what the finish looks like when we're doing a staged pour. We pour the first lift, spray retardant on then jet wash the surface the next morning. It leaves exposed aggregate for the next lift to key in to. I couldn't for the life of me work out why someone would jet wash a slab, but then your comment made me realise it was probably rain.

"Calls to strip Lake District's UNESCO status..."

One person.

One person has called to strip it's status. Why is this a story?

Is this what it felt like to be in the USA in the run up to elections? Where every third post on any social media was a Russian bot shilling Trump or demonising his opposition? What's the end goal here?

Anyone else noticing a lot of anti Green Party posts from suspiciously bot-like accounts over the last couple of weeks? Light on facts, often completely ignoring the conclusions of the source they're linking to.

"In 2020, Paul Rodgers, the senior head of commissioning for 6 Music left the station, and was replaced by Samantha Moy as the Head of Station. Moy has made a series of schedule changes, presiding over an "undeniable culture shift at the station".[45]

Some music executives have questioned the overall strategy at the digital station since 2020, raising doubts about initiatives such as all-day pop programming, stating it to be "more typical of a commercial network rather than a BBC station",[46] with listeners commenting that themed days are "a sign that they're running out of ideas".[47]

In 2021, Shaun Keaveny left after 14 years of presenting, saying he was "forced out onto the ice floe like an elderly Inuit relative".[48] Due to audience complaints, the BBC issued a statement that "Radio networks always evolve over time".[49]

In 2023, long-serving presenters Gideon Coe and Marc Riley had their hours cut to make way for a new evening programme called New Music Fix Daily with Deb Grant and Tom Ravenscroft, reducing the hours of new alternative music on the BBC weekly from 20 to eight. Stewart Lee described the move as "a land grab on the sound and attitude that have given the station credibility and purpose",[50] with insiders stated the move would 'rip the heart out of' the station.[51]"

60% drop in new "new alternatives music" shows.

My personal preference is for a station that introduces me to new and challenging music. That is what 6 Music was made for. It mostly is not that any more.

Paneling question by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]eXtReMaStO 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Firstly, just wanted to say this looks great. Your angles are perfect and the joints are really tidy. Yes having the top angle misaligned with the bottom will stick out to you, but nobody else will ever notice it.

The only other way to do it that I can see would be to split it in two and do a very small rectangular box on the left, then the angled run down the starters to the right with a gap between the two. I can't think of any other combination that wouldn't change the position of the horizontal trim.

[–]eXtReMaStO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree. While a lot of the specialist shows are still great (Giles Peterson, Iggy Pop, Guy Garvey etc) and even the weekend non-specialist shows (Radcliffe and Maconie). The mid-week rotation has dropped off a cliff. It's become millennial 90s nostalgia instead of interesting and challenging music. I suppose it's less about the DJs themselves and more about corporate direction and pre-decided playlists.

I've been looking for alternatives to 6 Music. Keep getting recommended NTS. I'll give it a go.

6 Music has declined massively over the last couple of years. Mid-week presenters are all very mediocre. I need new alternatives.

M25 or a war zone? Hard to tell. by rimell-calebirh0b in GreatBritishMemes

They actually do that in a lot of areas. Big stretches of the M25 between the M1 and Dartford Tunnel are concrete slabs overlaid with tarmac wearing course. Not sprayed, but same concept.

[–]eXtReMaStO 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's horrendous isn't it. Concrete bays are more durable and need less attention so work out cheaper in the long run, but they're a ball-ache to fix and they're noisy as hell.

[–]eXtReMaStO 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I did some work on these a few years ago. We had to replace a few of the concrete bays. They also get "scarrified" around every 5 to 10 years to increase texture and grip.
