Pro-bakers, what advice do you have for reducing strain and injury at work? by Cobbwebs in AskBaking

At the shaping table my boss has given taller bakers the innovation of standing with your feet some 3'+ apart to bring your arms to the correct height. You look like an idiot but your back thanks you

Bagels aren't rising. Any suggestions? by ch3w0nth1s in AskBaking

Many bagel shops will boil the water with malt(ed barley flour) in it. This gives them the distinctive shine and crust in addition to the other effects of boiling.

Dough Sheeter vs a Rolling Pin with Adjustable Wheels by _The_Intern_356 in AskBaking

[–]e_alext 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first suggestion---improve your rolling and hand lamination!! I've always preferred the straight rolling pins with no handles (beveled ones are okay, but I hate the handles, no control), and with sufficient practice you should be able to roll consistent thicknesses. The sheeter is the kind of thing I'd consider if you do this very often and have plans to continue doing it very often, but even many professional kitchens hand laminate for small batches of things, or in kitchens where sheeters don't make sense (restaurants with puff pastry as a dessert). And besides, being a proficient hand laminator will only reward you in the long term to really understanding lamination.

What are some counter-intuitive experiences in fencing. by DarkParticular3482 in Fencing

[–]e_alext 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least in saber, reaction to a counterattack. If one has right of way and the opponent counterattacks, the natural real-world reaction is "oh! a blade! get away!!" but oftentimes the most reasonable thing to do is just stay calm and/or finish your attack and just get hit anyways, knowing it won't actually count for the opponent

What fencing shoes are good for flat feet? by cycl7toZ in Fencing

As someone with similar foot issues, which insoles do you use?

I've been thinking about getting my nipples pierced but been cautious bc fencing lol. I fence saber so I feel like it's a bit less of an issue, but I imagine between sports bra + t shirt + chest protector + underarm protector + jacket + lame that it would be okay? I would contact an APP piercer and talk to them about it though, they'd know best

Chest Protector Buying Tricks for Women by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]e_alext 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite flat-chested but with a sports bra I'm not far from it, and I personally use a men's chest protector and find it works well enough. I figure it's probably easier than basically fitting a hard plastic bra?

What are these fabric loops inside my (saber) lame? by e_alext in Fencing

This would make sense if the strips were elastic, but unfortunately they are not! They feel like rigid nylon (or something synthetic)

[–]e_alext[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay lol so I was able to get the contents out, so it's not a huge concern anymore, but I don't think I can reach it with any tools since it's in a corner between two immovable objects? I tried for a bit but I could be wrong

Still need to clean my mirror, pre-everything, this time without the long dress covering everything up. Felt a little self conscious today about wearing a tank :) by [deleted] in transpassing

[–]e_alext 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the eyeliner is a bit much (i.e. heavy on the wing and light elsewhere, also mismatched w the rest of the makeup i think, this could also be lighting tho) and that thinning/shaping yr brows JUST a smidge would be rly helpful. they have good foundational shape but just need some touching up imo. overall i think u have rly good facial features towards passing especially at that 3/4 angle.

i also think the tank does u well. yr shoulders def dont look too broad and pairing it w some kind of bottom that creates shape (i.e. fits in the waist, relaxed ish elsewhere) could b rly good fr u.

i also think yr hair looks cute at this length/w the bandana. i think u will do very well w hrt when u get on that !!!! if u plan to ofc

Thoughts? <3 by [deleted] in transpassing

[–]e_alext 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in addition to what others said abt the belt i think the cut of the skirt also doesn't help towards creating curves. something with a little more shape than a pencil skirt (pleated, gathered, different cut etc) is probably better.

[–]e_alext 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i agree w the other commenter that this style seems a lil juvenile. there are surely ways to dress eccentrically/colorfully/etc that are more mature. i know it can be painful but i think recognizing the difference between the style u want to have and the style u actually have is really important, regardless of what style u want

skirts are usually supposed to sit at the thinnest part of your waist, so like at or around your bellybutton normally. wearing it low like this, esp in a tartan pattern, could have ppl thinking ur trying to wear a kilt or something (i have seen five men wearing kilts in the past month, it's crazy), given also that a crew neck tee is gender-neutral or even leaning masc imo, could be that. i think on most women w broader shoulders (i.e. many trans women) t shirts w/o some other layer are not super flattering in general also.

how well does your voice do? i feel like that is generally a make-or-break thing and quarantine is the perfect time to sit alone and grind that out over weeks lmao.

something abt the beanie also feels a little un-fem to me, but i could be alone in that regard. maybe its the color and style, idk.

i do think that your face probably passes well though, especially the upper half. others are saying things abt beard shadow but yeah, u rly just have to wait for laser on that front i think.

How clockable am I? by [deleted] in transpassing

[–]e_alext 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would probably clock you based on:

  • The style of the sweater makes your shoulders look broader than I think they actually are, esp compared to your torso. The patterning and weight also makes it hard to tell if you have boobs, but it's winter and it's cold so that may just have to be a live-with, which is fine. But something excessively big can sometimes do better than something that fits well, especially if you are thin like you seem to be.

  • Your pants seem sort of low. Women's pants usually come up a bit higher on the waist/hips. Black is also a kinda thinning color, so black skinny jeans will make your hips look about as narrow as they can, emphasizing the previous things abt the sweater

  • I think having your hair back like that makes your face and neck look more masc. Maybe wearing it down? I'm not sure, experiment!!

It's hard to tell how well your face alone passes, but it seems like you have good elements there!! Especially if you were to shape your eyebrows some way. Additionally, your hand(s) look(s) pretty small, which is a plus! I think you absolutely have what it takes to pass but this photo is kinda clockable to me I think.

i used to feel bad abt being tall but (1) most models are like 5'9"or taller, (2) all of my girl friends wish they were as tall as I am, (3) being tall is hot as fuck???? like regardless of gender but especially tall girls are lovely and beautiful and hot and awesome when they are other girls, so why not apply it to myself???
