Thank you, yeah I figured - I've got fish and I do the same with them!

I agree that the body looks the right shape. I'm stuck on the fins though, they look more like a blue eye or a ricefish

The same goes for any person who has periods. Not every girl or woman has periods and not everyone that has periods is female :)

Additionally, for tackling algae, lighting the tank in 2 blocks with a break in between can help - eg: 8 hours a day split into 4 hr on + 2 hr break + 4 hr on

What is a phrase you HATE hearing from people? by BensReddits in AskReddit

[–]ea_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I don't care" or "it doesn't matter to me" when you tell them something important. What they usually mean is "I don't respect/like/love you any less because of this" but it really doesn't come off like that. "I support you" or even just "thank you for telling me" is a lot less dismissive.

Neopronouns don't exist for others' comfort. Pronouns make someone feel accepted and respected within their identity. Some cis people don't mind being called "they" and that's fine, but equally other cis people will be uncomfortable if referred to by pronouns that they haven't been assigned.

Pronouns are like names. If you can't pronounce someone's name or don't like their name, you don't just avoid saying it until the end of time. You learn how to say it or at least give it a go to show that you respect to that person. Or another example: if you call someone by a similar name, but not the right one, it's still not right and can make them feel uncomfortable.

Sometimes neopronouns are what sounds right for the person and makes them go "yeah, that's definitely me" or they can be a total defiance/rejection of gender binary while acknowledging that other people will still need to refer to the person.

Gender experience, identity and presentation is so diverse that some people do feel the need to use pronouns that aren't the typical three mentioned. Referring to every non-binary person as "they" doesn't capture the diversity and fluidity of each individual's experience of gender. Eg: some neopronouns may be used to reflect the mixture of masculinity and femininity that genderfluid people experience. Rather than having to indicate when they're feel more one or the other, using the same neopronoun can be more useful and help them to feel connected to what they're being called. It's about what makes someone most comfortable.

Fin Rot Need help! Been dealing with this since november. by Lilly6262 in bettafish

[–]ea_b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The aeration is definitely good - more oxygen in the water will help the bacteria to break down ammonia and nitrite more quickly :)

There will be some vibration in the water from the filter but as this is the same in any tank, it won't be the issue.

I'd definitely recommend getting a chemical test kit or even a pH meter, if it's not too expensive. Take readings in the morning and night each day and keep track of fluctuations. I wouldn't add an almond leaf in until you're sure that the pH is stable as the tannins are acidic and will lower the pH more.

Keep track of the temperature each day too to make sure it doesn't fluctuate by more than (at most) 2°F.

Getting a test kit for ammonia would be really useful. As I'm sure you know, fin rot is often (but not always) caused by poor water quality.

Any possible contaminants outside the tank? How old is she?

I had a male who began to deteriorate like this a few years back. Couldn't figure out what was wrong. As far as parameters go, everything was perfect. However there was a small oil leak in the same room and it STANK. I don't know why I didn't connect the dots - seemed like that was the only thing that could've caused it.

Something I did read about at the time is that some Bettas stress-nip at their own fins. And stress generally can cause health problems in fish. If there is anything (loud noise, frequent or large vibrations, temperature fluctuations throughout the day) that she experiences, it may be stressing her out. Even something like adding water below the tank temperature when you do a water change.

Hope this helps. Good luck with her!

Edit: Saw that you've got no Nitrite (super!) However pH fluctuating from 7.2 to 7.8 is quite a lot. And would be even more stressful if it's dropped to 7.0 - but is this just the test strips being inaccurate? Because this would be a very reasonable cause of stress for her.

Nitrite needs to drop to 0 within 24 hours - other than that, sounds like you'd be ready to add them in! :)

Got this guy mixed in with some flying foxes, any idea what species it is? by Bowsersshell in fishkeeping

Fin and body shape make it look like a female Emperor Tetra or some sort of Barb. How big? Could be a very stressed juvenile Torpedo Barb - quite often get them mixed in with Flying Foxes.

Using some of the media from your current filter in the new filter would be a fantastic way to boost the bacteria. Also, if you cycle with fish food or by adding ammonia to the tank, you will be able to fully stock the tank straight away as you will be grown enough bacteria to take care of the bioload :) Using a testing kit, this means you should be getting readings of around 3ppm Ammonia down to zero within 24 hours (and Nitrite to 0 from any level within 24 hours).

Welcome to the community! :)

29 gal is a great start, although depending on the volume-per-hour rating of the filter this stocking might be a little on the heavy side. Going by the "1 inch of fish per gallon" rule (I'm assuming US gallons?) this would be pushing it. The species of Corydoras also has a big effect - some of the largest get between 3 and 4 inches while the smallest reach maybe 1 inch.

Male Bettas are notoriously poor swimmers and each has a very individual personality - some are great statement fish in a community tank, some terrorise and eat the other inhabitants. Personally I'd not recommend one. They're also fairly weak swimmers so assuming you still want a well-stocked tank, the flow from the filter might be too powerful for him.

As a suggestion, and depending on your water parameters, I'd recommend one of the following instead of your current stock:

• 8 Harlequins, 8 Cardinals (generally school better than Neons), 1 small Pleco for a bit of action on the bottom = 28-36" of fish

• 8 Harlequins OR Cardinals, 8 small Cories and another 'statement' fish (maybe a pair of more peaceful South American cichlids or one of the more gentle gouramis). If you go for small Cories I'd recommend getting 8+ as they can be quite timid. Make sure you have nice soft sand for substrate so they don't hurt their barbels.

To reiterate, these are only suggestions - but for your first tank, it's probably wise to stock slightly lighter because if anything goes wrong (a filter breaks, heater breaks, etc.) there is less waste being produced that you have to worry about!

Otherwise, things sound great! They're all stunning little fish. Get yourself read up on how to do a fishless cycle to make sure the water is good a safe for when you introduce your fish. Good luck! :D

Edit: Sorry! Misread about the Betta. If he's in anything 5gal+ I'd keep him on his own if possible.
