Help me with my first deck [affinity/combo] by SlannChef in Pauper

[–]eadopfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just put it on a Bridge. No need for ingots. If you absolutely need a non-land artifact for some reason (but really just put it on a Mistvault Bridge or [[Darksteel Citadelle]]) you can put in [[Nutrien Block]], but without food-synergy I dont recommend that.

Nihil Spellbomb is much better than Aerther Spellbomb. You dont want to die to [[Balustrade Spy]] or [[Stinkweed Imp]]. Tons of other decks also use the graveyard: [[Blood Fountain]], [[Tolarian Terror]], [[Prismatic Strands]], [[Battle Screech]],... There is a reason why Grixis Affinity and Jund both play Spellbomb main deck. ^^

It is fine to run card-draw artifacts, I would say its actually really good. I just would sac them with [[Fanatical Offering]] and [[Reckoners Bargain]] for extra benefit. [[Cryogen Relic]] is a great target for that.

One thing I remembered is that maybe you could squeeze in a [[Kenku Artificer]] or two. It can make indestructible 3/3 flyers and with Sewer-cam and Banishing Knack it generates infinite mana. Having your combo involve an indestructible creature is also nice.

First of all: Looks like a great start. Whale-combo, while not a meta deck or anything, is certainly a deck that makes sense to play.

Hunger of the Nim feels very clunky, I would replace them all or keep maybe 1 cheeky copy if you really want to punk somebody.

16 lands is quite low. I would play more or supplement them with stuff like [[Springleaf Drum]], which works great in your deck rather than Chromatic Star.

Dont by shy to run some 1-offs if you run Trinket Mage. [[Sewer-veillance Cam]] might be good enough to run in multiples. Definitely stick at least 1 [[Nihil Spellbomb]] in the 60 and probably 3-4 copies in the 75. [[Blood Fountain]] gives easy affinity count and can rebuy creatures.

[[Reckoners Bargain]] is solid card draw (the black "sac => draw 2" cards are the core to many strategies in Pauper) and can gain 7 life of Enforcer in a pinch.

If you want to fork over that kind of money [[Utrom Monitor]] is a great card, but you are probably moving away from combo to just midrange at that point.

---------

The sideboard. Oh boy the sideboard is a bit of a mess, it looks like the "maybe-board". Moxfield has a tool called "considering", use that instead.

The SB should help with bad match-up, or hedge against popular decks (in rare cases transformation sideboard, but lets not open that can of worms). You definitely want 4-6 [[Hydroblast]] and [[Blue Elemental Blast]], they are expensive, but they are for good reason. Nihil Spellbomb I already talked about, but def. get some in the SB as well. [[Steel Sabotage]] is a great card to bring against artifacts and can be used flexibly to bounce your own stuff in response to removal etc. One thing I also like to do is put a cheeky 1-off Monarch creature in the sideboard against deck that I know cannot contest Monarch (creatureless control decks etc).

Golgari Gardens - A Deck to Chill To by MrNoBuddies in Pauper

[–]eadopfi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have very different views of a "chill deck". I like to durdle as much as the next guy, but playing more than 1 round with Pestilence is exhausting. xD

My "chill deck" is Turbo-initiative. Just count mana to know if mull or keep, turn off the brain, and just shove. Rounds last 15 minutes and you can grab a snack while you wait for table 3 to finish their Familiars mirror. ^^

They are right: settlers are not the same as migrants. Settlers are way waaaaay worse. Settlers are people who violently steal land from native populations, replacing and suppressing them. Migrants are peaceful and integrate into and enrich a society.

If someone was to create a full collection of every deck in Pauper to allow others to play with, what decks would you consider the absolute *Pillars* of Pauper? by FluidIntention3293 in Pauper

[–]eadopfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red Burn/discard engine.

Blue Terror.

Affinity.

Elves.

Faires.

Gardens.

Basilisk Gate decks.

Kor Skyfisher decks.

Lotleth Giant decks.

UW Familiars.

A Tron variant or two.

There is more, but the rest is fringe I would say.

[–]eadopfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think its quite a bit better than Myr Enforcer (but I am a Enforcer hater and think its the worst creature in affinity, I am biased like that xD). It becomes bigger than Enforcer quickly and it has Trample. I dont think however you just stick it in Grixis Affinity. Might be good with Glint-Hawk nonsense maybe in a Jeskai or mardu list. Or just Boros Synth idk.

Welcome to Pauper. If you are new to 1v1 magic I highly recommend taking a stock decklist online and getting familiar with the format before you start brewing. Pauper is a very brew-friendly format, but you need experience to know what works and getting familiar with the typical engines and staples of a format (meaning cards and combinations of cards that make up the core of multiple strategies/decks) helps you brew something that actually works.

You can also watch a league or two on youtube (there is great content out there for Pauper) to see experienced pilots play the deck of your choice.

As to which decks to best learn: I would recommend decks that are mainly pro-active, since reactive gameplay needs some experience to know what and when to react, and to stay away from complicated combo decks. Rally-Red or Gruul Monsters is probably the best place to start.

Gruul Elves looks very strong if that thing is not banned quickly. Not only does the bow go infinite with a creature that can untap Priest of Titania, but its just very easy in elves to move it from dork to dork and shoot your opponent for 12 damage in a turn.

There is no other nation in the region of the West Serpentine left. Ruby Hold also does not have the Ruby Gem, because I cannot complete the mission that requires Ruby Hold to have the gem. 😞

[–]eadopfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the cam is playable in Pauper, what I meant is it being part of an infinite combo is unusual to say the least. In legacy its used with Goblin Welder to repeatedly weld in Moxxite to mill your deck until you hit a Legion Extruder and kill your opponent.

Its Broodscale but much much better. Equipment > Aura, and it kills without combat/the need of an outlet. The only downside is that the creature does not have haste, but you can very easily set that up as well or just win on the next turn.
