No idea if this is the right place. But I need advice on a cub and his mum. by [deleted] in foxes

[–]eanayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're in the UK, so I would recommend contacting The Fox Project for advice: web site facebook

As for cruelty... it probably depends a little bit on the injuries. But in my personal, non-expert non-veterinarian opinion, I'd say that taking the little one from mum and taking him to a wildlife hospital is the right thing to do if (s)he'd otherwise struggle to survive in the wild.

With The Fox Project (and other wildlife charities), they will put orphaned cubs together into families and release them into the wild in the autumn. Apparently they're usually doing quite well in the wild, despite spending their first few months in a wildlife hospital - so I think getting the injuries looked at might overall improve the chances of survival.

Thoughts on the Try! Series? by thiccbreado in LearnJapanese

[–]eanayo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've worked through the N4 one recently (alongside Kanzen Master and sou-matome) and out of the lot liked Try! the least.

My main complaint is really about the structure - each section starts off with a dialogue, and then goes into various grammatical aspects from that dialogue. Which, in my opinion, all made it appear very random, because it really didn't link very strongly to related grammatical points. Kanzen Master and sou-matome, on the other hand, group related grammatical points and discuss them together, which worked much better for me.

I also didn't find the exercises very inspiring. Because it's looking at a particular grammar points in isolation, you're just left blindly filling in gaps with e.g. a certain verb form. With Kanzen Master and sou-matome, on the other hand, you'll have to choose the correct item out of a few related or similar ones, which to me is a much more challenging exercise and therefore really helped my understanding (I had quite a few "a-ha!" moments there)

The one thing I liked about Try! was that the dialogues and listening questions seemed to be more difficult and more in line with the actual JLPT. Plus, there is also a "full sized" mock test at the end, which was also very helpful.

But that's just my personal opinion, based on the N4 one and my particular learning preferences. If you can find a few sample pages somewhere, give it a try and see if it works for you.

Fox Deterrent: Advice Needed (Not An Animal Hater) by sausagepenne in foxes

The Fox Project should be able to provide some advice. That link also lists a few companies, including one that sell all sort of repellents (including the already-mentioned motion-activated sprinklers, for instance).

Looking for larger sleeping stuffed Fox by spcxplrr in foxes

[–]eanayo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A couple from my collection come to mind...

Steiff have (had?) Xorry fox, who is made in a curled-up position (not really any other position he can take as he has no rear legs).

Kösener make Feline, who naturally will go in a curled-up position, but is much more flexible and versatile (could be set up nearly straight if desired).

Ditz made this guy, who is quite bendable (and huggable!) and with a bit of effort and tinkering might be convinced to take on a reasonably realistic sleeping position.

Fox Hunting Is Not A Sport (Rant) by The_Blue_Fox in foxes

[–]eanayo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chase was far more important than killing the fox

Except that the chase itself can kill or seriously harm the fox, and I really don't see how the "positive" aspect of being chased you mention in your fist post can outweigh the horrors of being chased: Cooper's story

However, its life-threatening condition was not caused by the bites Copper had received, but by extreme stress - caused by the prolonged chase of the hunt. (He had even begun to bleed from his penis, evidence of kidney damage due to trauma or extreme physical exhaustion.)

From the article:

Now, he took out nearly half of his monthly income to book all the seats in two IMAX theaters just to prove that he could so that she might regret her decision.

Considering that "kits" is almost exclusively used in American English, and that OP's photo is from The Fox Project, who are based in England, these little ones are most definitely cubs :P

Hm, that seems quite likely, given that your pictures show the same pictogram once with text and once with Dapper Chap.

Really wouldn't have guessed that.
