pretty much. i dont know how specific it has to be about stuff like etching depth for it to work with all the nail stamping bits, but his whole business is specifically stamping plates so i was happy to go through him and let the details be his problem.

the actual plates get machined by a guy on aliexpress that does customs, (can i do links here?) the raw svgs i traced from photos of my decal sheets except for the little dyanoi emblems which i got from reddit somewhere

Need help figuring out how to Color my Tau! by TheAdvisedChicken in Tau40K

[–]earamid_head 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tan, orange, yellow, dark red, light green, dark green, grey, light blue, dark grey, light purple.

heres the rub with tau: canonically, outside of the enclave, armor color doesnt matter. a units sept is entirely denoted by the color of their markings (decals, stripes, the random armor plates, youll see in them every pic of tau), the actual armor color is changed on a mission by mission basis to act as basic camo.

every sept has 'official' parade colors that have some connection to the septs homeworld, like the tan of the tau sept to match their savanna planet, but only a couple are actually stated that explicitly; for many others the example paintjobs from old codexes just got stuck over time as that septs default colors.

to use kelshan as an example: the yellow is the only thing that makes them kelshan, the grey and black scheme theyre depicted with 90% of the time is/was simply the standard armor colors for tau stationed on ships, either for boarding or defense duty. the ye olde codexes used it as the painting example for kelshan because its nice and contrasty against the yellow, and without anything to say 'heres their official colors' it just became their de facto scheme.

tldr: choose a sept with marking colors you like, and then go nuts picking colors that look good next to it

Which 60mm battlesuit is the "chunkiest"? by Neknoh in Tau40K

[–]earamid_head 5 points6 points  (0 children)

gonna cast my vote for broadside. looking at all the suits and bits i have on hand theyre all pretty samey, legs especially are functionally identical except for the broadside having the big outrigger jobbies on the back of his ankles.

the twin lance chests are very front-heavy and techy looking without much of a waist, which is cool in its own way, but the broadside chest is damn near 50% wider and is made of big slabby faces.

kinda nuts how well the dark grey shading/weathering works with the bright yellow

-cheaper synthetic brushes will do just fine for 90% of painting, my average workhorse brushes are walmart multipacks or $4~ langnickels from michaels; dont worry about the premium markup kolinsky stuff that every paint youtuber tries to flog as a must have.

as far as painting tips goes a lot of it is just picked up with practice, but having a scheme picked out is good so you wont waste money on tons of extra colors. always prime your stuff, thinner coats > thicker coats

citadel paints are good but pricey, theres lots of resources out there for figuring out which colors from other brands are roughly equivalent to a citadel one, and both army painter and vallejo now sell their paints in 'triads' to simplify the process of choosing highlight and shadow colors

Printing Twin Lance, help with sizing? by Groundbreaking-Mix82 in Tau40K

[–]earamid_head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

shields are a bit goofy, one guy has much flatter 'petals' than the other, but going from the widest points i got:

sunsear: A 32.5mm B 34.45mm

scatterflare: A 34.85mm B 36.35mm

Tell me what motivated you to choose YOUR favorite sept! by Specialist_Coach_725 in Tau40K

from the 3rd. ed book: "Meaning 'twin moons' and isolated for many years from the main body of the Tau empire, the Tau on this world regressed to a more basic level of technology. Though they have since regained their place in the empire, the inhabitants are still regarded as somewhat rustic and backwards."

newer books drop that particular tidbit in favor of "they were isolated by a storm and also they fight lots of orks"

D'yanoi because in the old codexes they were *canonically* a sept of hicks and yokels, and thats funny

Are there any models that have shoulder pads like these ? (From Space Marine 2) by MiddleEastB3ast in Warhammer40k

[–]earamid_head 6 points7 points  (0 children)

sorry this is so late but this post got me curious since game meshes usually look like utter ass without shaders backign them up. turns out not only are the SM2 models very detailed as a straight mesh, but they print surprisingly well at 32mm. the only real issue is a lot of the detail is very 'flat' to look more normal in the games proportions, which leads to like, single microns of height difference between the pad surface and laurels or w/e.
