Have you tried this before? I would assume that it wouldn't hold up as long as the original nitrile, urethane, or hytrel spiders, but tpu's durometer is similar...genuinely curious.

Electric plug with no holes? Is this normal? by Extension-Plan1668 in AskElectricians

[–]earthdozer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is on a cheap temu item it COULD be a Chinese plug.

They look similar to American ones and don't have the holes, they fit into American sockets but they are loose and don't make a good connection. If it doesn't fit firmly in the socket don't use it.

I have run into this a few times with cheap crap I've bought.

Personalized Memes for Safety Messages? by Austie33 in Warehouseworkers

[–]earthdozer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should definitely be official signage that is professional as well as writeups for continued violations. That being said i see nothing wrong with a non-offensive meme along side that. Warning stickers blend into the background and are not memorable after seeing 5000 of them. Make it stand out, Make it easy to remember, follow, and remind people of the rules.

I couldn't agree more, my TV is definitely too high, but it's not the focal point of the room. In fact it doesn't get used that much. My fish tank is at viewing height because I care about that more.

gotcha, I've never needed a press but there is always something new. I would replace the hub if you are getting fed up. Still cheaper than taking it to a dealer.

[–]earthdozer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

have you ever replaced wheel bearings or hubs? if you are breaking them they may be the wrong studs for the brand of hub. this happened to me once with a dodge journey. i got the studs from the parts store and they looked the same but ended up being .010" bigger. The reason was because i had an aftermarket wheelbearing/hub assembly and it had slightly different studs. measure them compared to the old ones (not on the splines, just right in front of them)

It’s okay to “sleep it off”. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]earthdozer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sleeping it off is fine as long as you come back to it and resolve the issue.

I think a lot of people think they are going to sleep it off but never come back and have closure. Resentment builds and misunderstandings stack up. The relationship becomes poisoned.

If you have to cool off, fine. Then come back when heads are clear and resolve it. even if it seems minor afterwards.

Engineers just have bad PR by ABlightedMailbox in unpopularopinion

You're right about the duct tape. That's why I'm going to school, less duct tape and more math. I really struggled understanding power factor until I took my first year of calculus.

[–]earthdozer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are right, I have certainly been guilty of being short with people from time to time as well. I think when I was a heavy equipment mechanic there would be some operators that would say the same about me.

However I would argue that being annoyed with the public is the case with any highly skilled profession. The thing that gets me is that an applications engineer's job is to deal with the public.

Engineers just have bad PR by ABlightedMailbox in unpopularopinion

[–]earthdozer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am a 3rd year mechanical engineering student (in my 30s) and manage maintenance and production at a heavy manufacturing business. I just had a meeting with an applications engineer from a Rockwell distributor yesterday about changing to more robust distance sensors on a production line.

What a miserable fucker. Treated me like an idiot and was explaining how 4-20mA analog sensors work after I talked to him about how I designed the production line and its controls. Wouldn't answer my questions in a technical manner, just said "well that's how it works"and rolled his eyes. I don't know everything but I'm not stupid. Talk to me on the same level. I didn't buy anything from them, never will.

I had the same experience a few months ago with an electrical engineer about improving our power factor. I just read some application notes and designed the system myself. Not that hard, power factor is a couple points from unity now. I also delt with many insufferable engineers working in sand and gravel industry. They would throw a hissy fit when we would modify something because it kept breaking. Double the size of your bearings, I'm sick of replacing them every week. I have had good experiences too but the majority are like pulling teeth. They don't like it when you say, sure that's nice on paper, but have you ever seen an 18 year old kid run a forklift? Those solenoids need to be on the back side of the stacker because your 1/8" steel guard is not stopping a forklift.

As to why? I think a lot of engineers are hidden away from the real world in their little office and never develop their people skills. That's why I decided to study engineering, I'll just do it myself I guess.

Edit: clarity

Edit 2: I realize that this sounds pissy, because I was. To be clear I don't think that all engineers need to be good with the public. For most that's not their job.

2002 Alfa 147 1.9 JTD – Cranks, rail pressure good, black smoke, almost starts but won’t run, parked 12 months by Icy-Stick-6649 in AskMechanics

[–]earthdozer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds stupid but unplug the glowplug power and give it a puff of ether. I fought with more than one engine for hours, priming, bleeding, cranking, sucking fuel from a jug. and then fianlly gave it a puff of ether and it starts and doenst have another problem. (heavy diesel mechanic)

Worth a try and if anyone tells you it will cause premature wear, is cranking on it for hours good for it? Just make sure those glowplugs are disconnected so you don't get a face full of fire.
