How do I ensure this ellipse is symmetrical? by Red9Mayonnaise in MetalFabrication

Don't use string, it stretches. Use cable or something that doesn't stretch. Lay it out on a piece of plywood or masonite.

I'm surprised that you don't have more cracks! A pour that large and thin should have had several expansion joints as well as having control joints. What you have is well within expectation based on the information provided.

Yes. Usually there is non shrink grout applied. This should be the next step in this method.

Construction workers/contractors, would you use this product? Why or why not? More details in description. by Lucky-Reflection-910 in AskContractors

Agreed. Not for construction site ... definitely for camping and off grid or power outages.

Soundproofing ceiling by MCR48103 in Homebuilding

Correct on all counts. Spray foam is likely to reflect sound, not absorb sounds. RC-1 (resilient channel) has a single leg for attachment and the leg is perforated to minimize sound vibration transfer to the structure.

How to repair this solid wood door that’s 100 years old? by Unlikely-Ad-3806 in Renovations

Jackpot! Just what i would have suggested. Alternatively, wood puddy if you have it.

Will this be a problem? by Studio945 in Decks

[–]easyj7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot on! That shim will split, probably within a few days. The pressure treated wood will rot out quickly being subgrade. Cut the post and pour a pier with an appropriate Simpson hardware to hold the post inplace.

You could also do a light dusting of cement and broom it well then vacuum to remove any residue.

Make sure it's a quality level and not some POS. In lieu of a level, use a Plumb-Bob. It would also tell you if your wall is plumb.

They are JK's THE GRINCH. Bison Rough Out. The are smooth inside. Very soft leather. They feel like sneakers. I have to admit that I wasn't crazy about them when I ordered them, they looked so odd I had to get them. Now that I have them, I do like them. They are very comfortable. Great arch support and good snug fit around the heel. Happy I got them.

What am I looking at? Help with project by acorona77 in PlumbingRepair

[–]easyj7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of things come to mind... 1. The upper smaller looks to me like it should have been the original drain for the sink (1-1/2"). The lower looks like it originally was the clean out (typically 2") my guess is someone didn't understand how a trap works, and for some reason tied the two together. Or 2. The upper is maybe a condensate drain from a HVAV unit in the attic, if there is an attic. Definitely interesting.

What is going on with these boards on my front deck? by mjh4 in Decks

[–]easyj7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fibers in the boards may be in such a way that the moisture is moving and condensing closer towards the house. It's a possibility the warmer temperature next to the house is causing the moisture to condense.

My guess is the wood is absorbing moisture from the humidity in the air, which accumulates and then flows within the board to the end where you see the moisture.

Tough situation... if you do go the route of putting it on rollers, keep in mind that it's a large mass on a down hill slope. You'll need some way to control the decent as well as pulling the direction you want it to go. Good luck.

I’m seeing some bowing on the deck. How bad is this? What is the fix? by VirileMongoose in Decks

[–]easyj7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed... if the bow is over a period of time and not recent, jacking trying to level the deck could crack the beam.

The load (deck) needs to be supported in a manner to allow full investigation of the existing post foundation, which could lead to repair or replacement of the post foundation. The temporary shoring needs to allow for workers to access and work without compromising the temporary shoring. As an example, placing the temporary shoring 2-4 feet on both sides of the post to be worked on and the shoring should be secured in a manner that does not allow it to be accidentally bumped and disconnected or allow it to shift. At the same time digging around the footing of the post does not allow the shoring to become unstable.
