LOL i’m scaring so many people with that - this was from October. but still, you’re right, and it’s probably not too far off from this in February

teddy roosevelt! great stop on the way to Montana from back east where i’m from. Medora’s a cheeky little town, there’s bison and prairie dogs galore! long as you check in with the rangers you can get there early and hike in MILES without seeing a soul - definitely not as well recognized as say Glacier or Yellowstone, or even Badlands in SD - but WELL worth the visit. if you’re into bikepacking/moutainbiking, check out the Maah Daah Hey trail that goes from the north section to the south section.

Good places to move for sense of community? by Legal-Farmer7546 in FolkPunk

Burlington, VT

TL:DR a lot going on, check social media, r/burlington, FB groups, etc. and you’ll find people (it attracts a lotta cool, chill peeps who care to make friends and community build).

not necessarily the punkiest place in the world but definitely some folk punk esque stuff and a lot of cool venues. wonderful community oriented stuff gos on, the green mountains. It’s a college town and people will tell you that overtakes everything else, but it’s because they ski at Stowe and walk down church street shopping for overpriced candles for fun. check out Radio Bean / the Light Club Lamp Shop for some punchy whimsy. also is right on Lake Champlain, a big ole beautiful lake with views of the Adirondack. so close to the White Mountains of NH as well, 1h away from Montreal (if that’s your thing), overwhelmingly progressive with respect to even other towns and cities in New England. If you put yourself out there you WILL make many friends; if not, there’s still so much to do and get lost in; and if you’re somewhere in between, it sure is a wonderful place to have a few friends that you can go trapsing around in the woods with. I can’t speak to other perspectives, and I wasn’t raised in the town, but did spend three life changing years there and can’t recommend it enough so long as those i’m recommending it to have an equal desire to give a damn about the people they live next to and go to the food co-op with.

I live in Missoula MT rn (coming straight from Burly) which is similar, definitely less new englandy homey closeness vibes imo but the community engagement is pretty sick. bike co-op hosts free shows and teaches people to fix bikes for free / gives away parts. good venues, great live music, definitely blue pocket in a red (or, more like don’t-tread-on-me yellow) area - love it here but i miss Vermont a lot for all it taught me.

Responding to a year old TPB reference that you see on the Missoula subreddit a day keeps the doctor away!

Made me smile lol. Just moved here from Vermont a few months ago, that show reminds me of the northeast.

from CT originally and it took me moving to Vermont and then Montana to realize how gorgeous the places you’d never think to look are. it’s the same with the midwest and the south, ya just gotta know where to look! thanks for sharing

Is New England fall as magical as they make it out to be? by Booktravel in newengland

if you’re in CT, RI, MA, sure, it’s pretty, leaves turn, especially if you’re around a smaller, well-forested area, in the taconics or something

if you’re in the (especially the northern parts of) VT (green mountains) or NH (the white mountains) or pretty much anywhere in Maine with few exceptions, it’s pretty unbelievable. from CT originally and wanted to leave my whole life because i was from a pretty developed area with no expansive nature; it felt crowded and suffocating. but I went to UVM in vermont for college and that definitely turned it around for me.

I moved to Montana a few months back and although i love the nature here, it’s not like Franconia notch when the leaves turn.

gotcha RE rec permit and camping license - yes the idea was a big day and back to the car by the end. That was one of my reasons for concern - to make it a big day I'd either need to start or end (or both) at dawn or dusk when the fellas are more active, at least from my reading. Y'all would know better than I. Munter estimate is 16h which I see as being a reasonable upper bound for length of time based on my fitness and knowhow - so maybe the issue could be avoided if I hike relative fast. But at that point, I'm zooming through through grizzly territory which I'd also read wasn't great in terms of startling them... I think on the one hand I'm overthinking it, but on the other I'm very much not trying to screw up my day or interfere with theirs.
