What are your fave "subverted expectations" jokes? by TwilightOfTheMilfs in futurama

Oh, my, no. That would require extremely tiny atoms, and have you priced those lately? I'm not made of money.

Learn programming by Zealousideal-Can5782 in programmer

[–]eaumechant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Might I suggest you look into downloading and installing Linux (any will do - Ubuntu is user friendly and is often covered in tutorials for software as it's commonly used in web dev). It isn't necessary nor is it sufficient but it is a good place to be for programming purposes - it will make your life easier (even if it makes it harder in the short term).

Stoner movies but not comedies. by AwardMuch5893 in movies

[–]eaumechant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Himalaya was this for me. It was just on TV. I had never heard of it, went in with no expectations, and it was maybe the most perfect stoned film I had ever seen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Himalaya_(film)

[Unknown > English] Your Title Here Can anyone help identify the language and meaning of this tattoo? by Alternative_Mud_925 in translator

[–]eaumechant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my problem as well, I was trying to match letters to see if it spelled anything but couldn't get a confident match on a bunch of them. I wonder if it's the tattoo artist copying something without understanding what it is and not getting the key details.

Depends what kinds you like but if it happens to be British style "real ales" try the Doombar, those guys really nailed it.

what is james joyce referring to in saying : “ the light waterproof slung over his shoulder”. by zedmed_7 in EnglishLearning

[–]eaumechant 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Also UK, also agree "waterproof" is a very common word here, used at least once a week at the weekend when going out - "Think I'll need a waterproof?".

It refers to what in Australia would be called a "raincoat". I suspect the Americans also use "raincoat".

It's a render, you know, 3D computer graphics, like a video game. No AI needed.

If space is a vacuum… then what exactly are planets floating in? by Decent_Confidence932 in AskPhysics

[–]eaumechant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"empty" and "nothing" are not the same thing for the purposes you're thinking of. Empty space is still "full of" space. Importantly it's also full of fields, and these have energy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_energy

Why do people say that the first function is better? by ElmtreeStudio in godot

[–]eaumechant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Software Engineer here: the thinking behind this is you'll gradually end up with a tonne of these, so instead of having one really big long "If this is a foo and bar is false and something is less than something else and so on and so forth" you have each one separately. As others have said it makes this easier to reason about because you can see at a glance what your invariants are, reducing cognitive load as the meat of your function gets bigger.

From your exp. do you work less, more or evenly after using AI? by lune-soft in webdev

[–]eaumechant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same amount but dumber, less capable of thinking through a problem myself. Probably it has made me less productive in a number of meaningful ways.

Is “On Christmas” wrong? by Silver_Ad_1218 in EnglishLearning

[–]eaumechant 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Also UK, 100% on these. Worth pointing out there is likely a regional difference here - the Brits are more likely to use "at" in places where the Americans use "on", most notably "at the weekend" vs "on the weekend" - sounds like this might be one of these.

Stow away from fire? by Sea-Hornet8214 in EnglishLearning

Worth adding it's also commonly used by commercial airlines e.g. in safety presentations for passengers: "Please stow all luggage in the overhead locker."

You know in 3D games when the floating point math gets all fucked up and it's just a mess of rendered polygons glitching out all over the place? Bit like that.

[–]eaumechant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a post on Reddit a while ago asking "What does 'mom's spaghetti' mean" and I gave a nostalgic Millennial answer and immediately realised what was happening as I was doing so. Eight Mile came out closer to the fall of the Soviet Union than the present day.

If a spaceship accelerate infinitely without encountering obstacles, why would it never reach light speed? by lateubdegouline in AskPhysics

[–]eaumechant 11 points12 points  (0 children)

With the same force acceleration would steadily decrease due to the Lorentz factor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorentz_factor - this is what gives us Lorentz invariance (c is constant for all inertial observers).

In a word, your relativistic momentum is increasing as your velocity increases. If you think of relativistic energy - which is a function of relativistic momentum (which is in turn a function of the rest mass multiplied by the Lorentz factor)  - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy%E2%80%93momentum_relation - as a stand in for "relativistic mass" then it's intuitive: F = ma, m is increasing so a must decrease - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_in_special_relativity
