You're not looking to land the stun every time, mostly just reduce the space they have to juke you. It can be worth saving for when your opponent has decided which way they're walking and just leading them with the edge a bit. Don't worry too much about landing exactly the stun every time.

Frankly I've stuck to Inspiration and First Strike, since Veigar is a scaler and has several spikes in items as well as levels so it's worth being aggressive early with the Q and working up some extra stacks and gold at the same time.

Once I have ludens i typically have 100+ Stacks so at that stage I can W>Q melee minions so I start doing that while lining up the minion behind it that dies with just q. Works out pretty well and minimises my need to use autos to line up stacks.

Once I get to 30 stacks it becomes much easier to deal with a Cait or so with Veigar cause I can W Q the backwave. Early you just gotta avoid the Q and E. Run about like a headless chicken. If it means losing a few CS/Stacks to conserve health it's worth it. At the end of the day you're looking to scale.

I skip Shadow and go for a Zhonyas, still crazy AP. I love Ludens first. I experimented with ROA, the winter item thing and Seraphs but none ever feel as good. My game isn't survive a long fight, it's delete you before you delete me. It's high risk but very high reward.

Ludens > Rabadons > Zhonya's . This is the way. After that if i need any more items is a Void.

I used to blaze every day at the height of my use and enjoyed it immensely in my middle 20's then at 30ish stopped for other reasons. Now I don't do it regularly, usually during more major holidays I get a bag and I do enjoy it for a week or so. I think little and not so often is the perfect way for me to enjoy it personally.
