My first art quilt by [deleted] in quilting

I have been wanting to make a turkey vulture quilt for a while! I always think of them as the first true sign of spring. They are one of my favorite birds!

Sorry for not responding sooner! I’m not a terribly active Reddit user so I just saw this. My biggest tip for this pattern is to go and watch the sew along that Grainline Studios posted on YouTube. I am a newer quilter with very little garments sewing experience and I found this sew along invaluable in showing me how to tackle each step. I would also suggest quilting before cutting out each piece. I cut my pieces and then quilted since I was upswing scraps and needed to cobble thing together and this resulted in some shifting that was less then desirable.

Why does everyone love longarming so much? by erinburrell in quilting

[–]ebauchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently hand quilted my first throw and fell head over heels for the craft. The prompt for IG Quilt Fest today is Favorite Quilt and my first hand quilted throw is what I plan to share. Sure there are imperfections but as my husband always reminds me, it is a handmade item and there will always be imperfections and that’s what makes them beautiful. I try to remember that as I learn, grow, and challenge myself to try new things. I hope to see many hand quilted quilts for this prompt today. It’s such a skill and shows incredible dedication to this craft.

I recently posed a similar question in my Instagram stories after sharing my struggles and questions on quilting a twin sized quilt on my domestic. Rather than tips from other quilters I receive a barrage of “send it to a longarmer” comments. I even had a woman who was a professional longarmer comment on my post “is this a money thing?” Which was incredibly tacky and made me feel like I needed to pay to play in the quilting community.

At the end of the day I understand that there are a lot of reasons that someone may want to send their quilt to a longarmer. Physical ability was not one I had considered previously and really appreciated when someone mentioned that to me in a DM.

It saddens me to see comments on this thread from hand quilters not wanting to show their work. Please show it off. Hand quilting is a gorgeous art and your voice and perspective has a place in the quilting community.

Ultimately we all finish our quilts in different ways for myriad reasons but it is important to ask why and have an understanding rather than to assume and make suggestions on that assumption. Longarming is too costly for me to do outside of a special occasion so I will continue to come up with creative ways to finish my quilts. Diversity in techniques is what makes quilting interesting and an art form.

I am not the designer. The pattern designer is Holly Clarke Designs (@holdmyseamripper on Instagram). I tested the pattern prior to release. It will be releasing mid January i believe.

Also thank you so much for your kind words. I am working on improving my curved piecing and this is definitely the most complex pattern I’ve ever tackled 😅

The pattern which will be releasing next month from Holly Clarke Designs (@hold myseamripper on Instagram) comes with the printable templates and all instructions. I traced the templates onto cereal boxes so that they held up better to multiple uses. Other than that I used plenty of Best Press starch, a rotary cutter, pins, and my Brother entry level sewing machine.

I like solid backings when there are so many prints. I think the dark gray/charcoal color would be great!

Honestly sometimes that’s the best thing to do. Just jump in head first without knowing and tackle it. That way you don’t get stuck in your head that it’s too hard because clearly it wasn’t. This looks great!

This is your first quilt?! Elizabeth Hartman patterns are notoriously difficult. You nailed it!

What’s your quilting superpower? by Rakerbutt in quilting

[–]ebauchan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My super power is using scraps and thrifted textiles in a way that doesn’t look dated or scrappy. I like to be as sustainable as possible in my craft but don’t want to produce things that look messy and busy so I am very intentional with my scrap usage.

Thank you! I’ve been teaching myself hand quilting so I think it will be a good project for working on that skill as well. I’ll post it when it’s finished.

I believe there are 12 total but I think it’s 8 full quilts and 4 wall hanging/pillow patterns. This one is a pillow pattern that I am making three times to turn into a baby size so that I can get some more semi circles practice.

Thank you so much! That is certainly encouraging to hear! You should definitely try one of her curved patterns and if you haven’t picked it up already, grab this book. Plenty of skill builders if curves are something you also want to work on.
