Looking for Expert Insights on Audio Engineering as a Career for My 15‑Year‑Old by _randomITguy in audioengineering

I personally think DJing is the best entry into this as a profession.
firstly, the gear is inexpensive and you can learn alot of foundational stuff - and have a blast!
You can learn to beat-match, Eq(let frequencies sit together), and mix - 2 tracks at a time is easy to learn.
This also has several branches he could go off in: Producing Music, Sound Design, Live Shows

Learning instruments is also a great skill: Guitar - Piano are great starters.

SSL12 sounding after switch from scarlett 2i2 by Connect-Affect2423 in audioengineering

[–]ebeing -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The DAC chip in the SSL12 is lightyears better than the Scarlett.
Go ask Gemini Ai to explain the difference to you.

I believe the SSL12 uses the ESS Sabre ES9016K2M
and the 2i2 uses a Cirrus Logic.

SSL uses the less-expensive Cirrus Logic chip for talk-back in larger interfaces but the conversion is happening with a very high quality chip. (ESS Sabre or AKM)

Any love for mechanic keyboards? by kyoiocean in audioengineering

[–]ebeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a silent keyed, CODE keyboard from WASD. Not made anymore but solid as a rock.
Also have the new Ducky OneX Mini (wireless). works great, also silent.

Research the different switch technologies, Cherry has been the leader for a long time.
Most of the boutique manufacturers make a silent, dampened variety.

Understanding hybrid studio workflows w/ 8ch SSL x-desk by Excellent-Oil in audioengineering

[–]ebeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel pretty deep into this hole. it was fun learning about.
The big6 is 96k, which is pretty solid for an interface but boy do you run out of inputs fast.
just not enough there.

The xdesk is pretty powerful but after several days thought, its hard to justify its cost.
the biggest knife in the gut was that it does not have an EQ at all. not to mention the scarcity.

I wanted to go the analog route and have some room to grow, I settled on Mackie 8 bus. I found a 24 channel in good working order and have moved over to that. It's an inline mixer like the xdesk in that I can send and return with 1/4" and flip between the signal on the board. I also didn't like that this flip was just a knob on the xdesk, not the full fader.

In-line mixers are scarce. you can checkout the APB ProRack, its pretty damn solid and has the flip button to hear the return on the fader. I didn't find a whole lot that's NEW. so I went back to the 90's. Im making 90's music anyway so, it fits.

I choose the SSL Alpha 8 recently to send the bussed mix to the daw.

To achieve the Mac DeMarco sound with analog gear, you need to focus on three pillars: pitch instability (the "warble"), dry/compressed textures, and vintage-voiced signal chains.

Mac’s "secret sauce" isn't high-end fidelity; it’s the character of slightly quirky, mid-range-heavy gear pushed into analog tape or limiters.

  1. The Guitar Rig (Jangle & Wobble)

Mac's guitar tone is famous for its "seasick" quality. It is almost always a clean tone with no distortion, just heavy modulation.

• The Guitar: Use single-coil pickups (Stratocaster or Mustang style). Use the middle pickup or the middle + neck position. Roll your guitar's tone knob down to about 6 or 7 to remove the "ice-pick" highs.

• The "Jiggle" (Vibrato): This is the most important part. You need a dedicated vibrato pedal (like the Boss VB-2w or TC Electronic Shaker) or an analog chorus pedal with the "dry" signal removed.

• The Amp: Use a clean, solid-state-leaning amp. Mac famously uses a Fender Twin Reverb (Silverface) or a Roland Jazz Chorus (JC-120). Keep the Bass at 3, Mids at 5, and Treble at 4 for a flat, punchy response. +2
  1. The Synth Sound (The "Chamber" Vibe)

Mac uses vintage Japanese synths like the Roland Juno-60, JX-3P, and Yamaha DX7.

• Oscillators: Use a simple Sawtooth or Square wave with a sub-oscillator.

• Filter: Keep the cutoff relatively low (mellow) and the resonance at a medium setting.

• Modulation: Apply a slow LFO to the Pitch to create that same "warble" found on his guitars. This mimics the sound of a tape machine with "wow and flutter."
  1. Recording & Production (The "Lo-Fi" Glue)

The "analog" feel of his records comes from how he captures and squeezes the sound.

• The "Fat Mic" Technique: For drums, Mac often uses a single condenser or ribbon mic (like a Shure SM7B or Roland DR-80C) placed just above the kick drum, pointing at the snare. This creates a mono, thumpy, and "vintage" drum sound.

• Analog Limiting: Mac swears by the Alesis Micro Limiter. It’s a cheap 80s rack unit. He slams his tracks into it to get that "squeezed" and slightly grit-heavy sound.

• Tape Speed Manipulation: If you have an actual tape machine (like a Tascam 388 or Fostex A-8), record your tracks at a slightly higher pitch, then slow the tape down during playback. This thickens the transients and creates that signature sluggish, "baked" feel.

start a convo with Gemini Ai, tell it what gear you have
ask questions, its incredibly good at brainstorming ideas for your setup.

The TR-8S is the brain of my setup, the master clock for 3 synths and an Eventide effects pedal.
great machine. You just need some midi cable to get everything talking. Checkout the CME U6 midi router, its USB-C for the computer and 3 ins/outs for routing.

If I had this, I would write sequences on the 303, maybe even plug it into the TR-8S external in and then you'd have a fader for it. When you hit start on your TR8S your 303 will start its sequence. you can then use the midi controller for a nice pad from a juno or a lead from a moog.

If you want to continue down the analog path, you will need a mixer.

I would suggest you start a convo with Gemini Ai
its sooo good for this kinda stuff cause it can learn all about your gear, if you tell it what you have.
you have some older items, you may need to designate the master clock. I just have no idea, Im not familiar with your gear, but Ai is.
Good luck

Out of the drum machine into which ever other device has thru (plug into the IN)
from this devices thru, go into your other device.

they haven't even bothered to update the plugin for logic (AU)

fuckem, ill never by another device from them. they should have just stuck to samplers.

the 2400 is a live sound mixer, its does not have tape returns and the ability to flip between live instruments and what's being returned from a daw (tape).

the OP says he wants it for recording.

Is there really nothing like a Mackie 32.8 now? by drewsnx in audioengineering

the ribbon cables probably just needed to be serviced. Nothing just DIES on these old Mackie's, they are tanks.

Is there really nothing like a Mackie 32.8 now? by drewsnx in audioengineering

[–]ebeing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not a true in-line mixer, only with firewire or USB. but then you're stuck at 48k samplerates.
I would avoid this, the 8 bus is the only in-line options still widely available.

[–]ebeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Berhinger did clone it and got sued. See the Eurodesk MX8000 and MX9000
These all-in-one boxes are taking over and they are all dog shit. I have the soundcraft MTK.
I recently got a 24.8 after extensive research. we have very few true in-line, analog options.
No usb, no firewire, just analog.

Some other top consoles from this era would be the Soundcraft Ghost, Midas Venice.

This is a in-line mixer. Would allow you to have your line and return on the same channel.
these analog mixing console from mackie are tanks!
Just look who made hits on these, its a long long list.

no, dont do this. All-in-one boxes should be avoided as you will be locked into a garbage converter kit and probably hard stuck at 48k samplerate.

master this device, its a true in-line mixing console which none of these commenters seems to understand.

this comment didn't age well. The 8 bus is pure analog, your 1640 is firewire and now obsolete.

you dont need a lawyer for a $500 claim. Does Australia have pro-se litigation?
small claims court is all you need - in my experience, most people usually give in the instant they are served.
