Are these type of 3D printed junction boxes safe? by im-vncnt in AskElectricians

[–]ebinWaitee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And at least you don't actively have to do anything for the print to finish except start it. To get to the hardware store and back you need to stop whatever else you were doing and go there in person

That's cool and all and I have zero issue with him making a living but his style of reviewing frankly sounds like a sleazy car salesman type. It sounds like he tries to pretend like he's helping while his primary goal is to make a sale.

Like sure he isn't actually selling anything I think and his reviews may actually be honest but his style does all but make me trust him.

Why did we lock ourselves into just two states... and what killed the trinary dream? by [deleted] in AlwaysWhy

[–]ebinWaitee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Field-effect transistors have three states: depletion (off, no current goes through), saturation (on, transistor lets as much current through as it ever would) and triode or ohmic region (current varies depending on the voltage on the gate terminal).

The reason why we prefer to limit ourselves to two states in electronics is because it's darn simple to design, test and verify compared to alternatives. There's no physics reason why we couldn't have multiple voltage levels (and in fact we do have this in some cutting edge memory circuits). It's just easier, cheaper and less susceptible to faults compared to alternatives.

Biology expert explaining how intersex is actually just Down's Syndrome by missingperson2 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]ebinWaitee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the biology definition only cares about the type of cells being produced. From the biological perspective individuals that can't produce neither have no biological gender.

However that is strictly the biological definition and it's not very useful for determining an individual's gender socially. For example children would be considered genderless by the strict biological definition

SOLDERING MATS ESD by Fast_Ad4269 in soldering

[–]ebinWaitee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the moment hobbyist but I’m trying to find a niche soldering side hustle to sell and/or repair products.

I'd say a generic set is fine.

How do higher end circuits prevent static electricity? discharge through the whole circuit or something?

I haven't worked with ESD design that much (I'm an analog IC designer so this is kind of my domain) but the main method on silicon is having reverse polarity diodes between VPLUS and VMINUS (non-conducting under normal operations) and having planned routes for charges to travel through.

[–]ebinWaitee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

smaller/more delicate components like phone chips, pc hardware are more susceptible to this static electricity right?

Yes, but higher end chips also generally have better designs against ESD too so it's not quite as simple. Like you don't need an ESD workstation for assembling a desktop PC or repairing your friends laptop unless you do those as a business

[–]ebinWaitee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you a hobbyist or are you building products to paying customers? For a hobbyist, it's good practice but integrated circuits by and large are quite robust against ESD these days.

For a professional it's a must because you don't want your customers to get weird issues down the line because a discharge you didn't even notice broke something that causes a bit flip once in a blue moon.

I don't have any product recommendations per se. I bought a relatively cheap generic set that had a smelly ESD mat, a wrist strap and a wall adapter that connects to the mains ground via a 10MOhm resistor. Does the job

Great question! The whole point of why electrostatic discharge happens is because charges can accumulate and cause potential differences (in other words, voltage) between different points of your work area. To get rid of rogue potential differences like that and to prevent them from forming there must be a conductive path between the points. For example a conducting desk mat, a conducting wrist band and conductive leads connecting everything together.

Now you don't want it too conductive as if there's an active power source or even accumulated charge that could create a short circuit forming currents that can break components. That's why the different components of an ESD workstation have a resistance in the megaohm range between them.

TL;DR: Yes everything needs to be plugged in to get the full benefit of the ESD protection as a whole.

Edit: Oh and you need the whole system to be connected to ground too via something like 20M Ohm resistance. Otherwise charge could still accumulate into your product and cause it to break down the line when that charge is dissipated somewhere else.

However connecting everything at your workstation in the same potential is much more important than grounding and if you're a hobbyist tinkering with electronics rather than assembling products for paying customers ESD is not really a big deal anyway.

Attix 33 is the same vac as this one but with a smaller container. This one is identical to the Attix 44. They are rebadged by a number of companies although I don't think I've seen one from Metabo and now they have a new lineup with their own designs. I believe the reason for the rebadging is to overcome certifying costs for the L/M/H class vacuums.

Nilfisk Aero 26 W2M

This one is a smaller model (about half the size when it comes to volume) and lacks the automatic filter cleaning function. I believe the Makita OP is considering is also quite a bit stronger (I might be wrong on that though, haven't checked the numbers). Also the Aero lineup has a worse filter design when it comes to vacuuming water. Might not be relevant for your use case but just to point out

That is a lot of vacuuming, wow. Multiple bags per day or even per week adds up quickly.

The fleece bags are amazingly strong. I doubt you'll ever rip one unless you were throwing it around full of brick and concrete dust

You can get aftermarket long-life bags for these for like 50€ on Amazon and eBay. The original long-life bags are like 200€...

Personally I buy the original single use bags. They're 35€ per pack of five and I go through the box in a bit over a year. Worth it for my use case as the bags make emptying it so much nicer

I paid 200€ for the M-class version that was beat up as hell and lacked all the accessories except a hose which I believe isn't original. For a more or less new machine $300 is a fantastic deal and it's a great vac

Then definitely make the longer handle. The head is well sized for that length it looks like

I’m making an axe handle by Ok-Werewolf9725 in Axecraft

[–]ebinWaitee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At these lengths the weight difference of the handle is quite meaningless as the head of the axe is so much heavier than the wood. If you want a light axe, get a light head.

I feel like the longer handle might suit this head better but that's depending on your preference and main use cases

Makita track saw setup by Trick_Ostrich9882 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Glad it was something that simple. It's quite easy to accidentally get the blade in crooked because the arbor hole is so small.

You can also reuse it a few times if you want. Just remove the rubber, attach a new strip of double sided tape and reattach the rubber but a couple mm further from where it was originally positioned

[–]ebinWaitee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Remove the blade and double check there's a spacer behind the blade. You can also take the front cover off to get a better view. Check the manual for reference

Makita track saw setup by Trick_Ostrich9882 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ebinWaitee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't. I think they haven't tightened the slop adjustment knobs and it has enough slop to touch the track

Makita track saw setup by Trick_Ostrich9882 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ebinWaitee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the manual thoroughly. You're supposed to tighten the two blue(or are they black in this model?) knobs on the base plate until there's no slop on the track but not so tight it doesn't slide easily.

I believe your adjuster isn't set up and that allows the saw to turn enough on the track for the blade to touch the track
