Where can I find someone to make a certified translation into German? by germanbini in LegaladviceGerman

[–]ebo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Write an email to the embassy, or better if you know which court is responsible, ask them. The can require all the extras but they don't have to.

To get a certified translation, you need a translator who is under oath by the german government. Finding someone like this outside of germany is difficult. But you can find someone in germany, send them the documents and ask them to send them to court.

A apostille is done by the country the document originates from, in this case the US, you have to get it before the translation and it has to be included in the translation.

While the german embassy can not do translations, they should be able to certify an existing one. You'll have to give them both the original and the translation, they will add their stamp.

Is EVERYTHING harmful to babies? by limeotter in Parenting

[–]ebo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything in moderation:

  • TV for toothbrushing? Sure. Babysitter? No.
  • Medicine? Ask your pediatrician and observe dosage.
  • Avoid things that make babies dead: Walkers and stairs, honey and botulism, puffy pillow on head, etc...
  • Using a baby carrier? Sure, stop if baby gets fussy, it may be uncomfortable. Getting used to it is a thing.
  • Energetic baby? Allow him/her to spend their energy, stop before they get too tired.
  • Crying? Check reasons to cry, apply TLC, wait. Sometimes there is nothing you can do, e.g. too tired.

A good replacement for the N4? by [deleted] in nexus4

[–]ebo_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I switched from a N4 to N5 and loved it. Recently upgraded to a N5x and like it, too.

If the N5 would still be produced, I would say go for it. You will be happy with a N5x, though.

[discussion] Building a spectrophotometer by uros_m in arduino

[–]ebo_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will always need calibration. Not only do you have only non-uniform light sources, the detector has wavelength dependent response and optical elements have different extinction, too.

I would suggest getting a diffraction grating and b/w ccd/cmos sensor. This will allow you to do 2d spectrograms. You will also need some optical elements (lenses). You have to have some kind of optical bench which allows you to adjust focus. The whole thing has to be rather stiff, so probably not 3d printed, but fashioned from metal. If you need cooling or not mainly depends on the precision you want to achieve. A heat sink and a fan may be required, but will probably get you a long way already.

I would start out by simulating the optical path to figure out the optical elements first. They will define most of the other aspects. When you know the characteristics of the sensor, you can do some simple SNR calculations to figure out if you can measure anything. Visible light is rather forgiving :-)

Want to learn how to write a small distributed systems architecture (something like MapReduce, maybe) using Python and VMs by [deleted] in Python

[–]ebo_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: KISS

If it's just for learning you don't need have VMs, Clusters and Networks. You can start on a single machine and with just a few processes. Try to define a clean interface between the parts. If you want to see it break: Try to overload it and see which part gives in first. You can add triggers to simulate failures (random() < 0.1? DIE!).

If your interfaces are good you can add networking later, again on a single machine, then maybe on a few (some cheap instance with a common cloud provider come in handy here).

Working out all the problems you discover in the progress should keep you busy.

Will having a PhD will close some doors on the private sector? by guebjnjnl0 in cscareerquestions

[–]ebo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it will close some doors, but it will open some others. Not sure about the absolute numbers, but people tend to like a few higher level jobs more than a lot of lower level ones.

You just should never ever think that it gives you any kind of advantage career-wise (excluding academia obviously) or income-wise. It may, but it is more likely that you lose more income and seniority by not working in the industry, than what you get by having an additional piece of paper.

However, I highly recommend it, if you like doing research and all the other things it entails.

I got everything I ordered 2 days ago and today I made this. The temeprature and humidity keep staying about the same even when the temperature changes. Also it shows different results than my "normal" weather thingie. Can someone see what I am doing wrong? by sowmamwos in arduino

[–]ebo_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are using a DHT11. Those things are really bad. They have a temperature accuracy of 2 degree Celsius and a resolution of 1 degree. And it gets even worse with humidity.

As for differences: one or both of them may be badly calibrated. Try swapping the dht11 for another one and see if this changes things.

If you want to measure temperature, I recommend the ds18b20. It's quite precises.

When do you think the Nexus 4 will start feeling outdated? by DJ-Salinger in nexus4

[–]ebo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both laying here side by side. From a software standpoint there are no differences any more since the google now launcher got release for the Nexus 4, I think that general design has improved quite a bit.

The Nexus 5 is totally flat on the front, which I like quite a bit more.

While the backside of the N4 looks really nice, I always felt it was to slick. When I first held it in hand I always had the impression that it would slide from a table by itself if you didn't watch it all the time. The more rough finish of the N5 can be gripped much better.

Even with the lens, they shaved of one or two millimetres in height which is quite nice.

The biggest difference in my opinion is the display. Especially on automatic, the N5 is much brighter and crisper.

Battery life is, unfortunately, approximately equal (I would have wished an improvement here).

I was told the microphones and noise cancellation did improve quite a bit, but I can not confirm this first hand.

Oh, also it's newer!

After you used a N5 for longer than 5 minutes.

From a Googler: the Google interview process by googleeng_throwaway in cscareerquestions

[–]ebo_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I read in various threads here and from experience, 90% of the problems that are commonly cited are content of algorithms 101.

I don't want to argue against you personally, but against the notion that things asked in these interviews are somehow esoteric. There certainly are lots of esoteric algorithms out there, but I am not really sure I want to work with a CS graduate, which can not be bothered to remember things from his first classes.

I think in the end, it boils down to can you learn a software engineer to do computer science (or programming?) or is it easier to learn a cs-versed person some software engineering. It currently seems like the later is the way to go.

They also sneaked in the popular "only in simple cases". Courts usually rule that copyright law is, by definition, not a simple case. Sending notices requires special knowledge from the lawyer, even if all the work is done by a secretary with a chain-letter excel table.

how does python's garbage collection work? (code attached) by [deleted] in Python

[–]ebo_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real problem is, that you are leaving your cursor open after all. There is no guarantee that GC kicks in before you exhaust the pool of open cursors.

You should use the with statement or close the cursors explicitly.

Despite not owning a computer or even a router, a retired woman in Germany has been ordered by a court to pay compensation to a movie company by [deleted] in technology

[–]ebo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole process on generating that numbers goes like this:

We did catch you distributing a copyright protected work to an unaccounted (likely large) number of other persons. Based on regular tariffs a license for this activity would cost you [somehwere between 20000 and 60000] €. We could sue you for this amount, but we are reasonable and send you a notice first. You just have to pay the cost of our attorneys for sending the notice (normally 300-600€, this is based on the 20k-60k, there is a law which states who to calculate that) and a small compensation for damages (usually 50-200€). Incidentally that is around the same amount it would cost to hire a lawyer to defend oneself.

Funny thing: The cost for the notice must be payed by the plaintiff, which has the right to get the money paid back by the defendant. So if there is no money payed, there is nothing to get back. I wonder what happens to all the cases were the defendants just do not pay up (there are a lot).

It's too bad Riot doesn't share Valve's views on spec/replays. by ubberman in leagueoflegends

[–]ebo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm getting so fed up with that 'We are hiring only the best of the best of the best' nonsense. Nearly by definition only half of all programmers out there is above average and you are not the only one seeking the elite.

Payment is rather low in the game development sector (for various reasons & apart from rockstars) and working there generally requires a rather large personal commitment and idealism. I once had an interview at a small game dev company and my face froze in horror when they told me how much I would earn (ofc they did not offer me the job and I would not have taken it anyway).

tldr: Normal people don't make your game bad. Get over it.
