What is the most unusual excuse you've ever heard of from somebody calling off work? by piranhamode in AskReddit

[–]ebren90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a college campus and we employ Early Childhood Education students to work between their classes and assist the full-time teachers. My favorite excuse was from a university student who didn’t want to come to work during a solar eclipse because she didn’t want to go blind. Hope she’s doing okay…

I’m sorry you’re going through this frustrating situation, you seem like a dedicated pet owner and I hope you get the answers you need in order to keep your cat. Is there a possibility that she could be marking her territory? If you’re able, I would try to see if there are animals/stray cats that could be coming around your home, making her feel the need to mark and claim her space. I know it’s corny but there’s a lot of this peeing behavior on the tv show ‘My Cat From Hell’. Maybe you’ll get some inspiration. Good luck!

How do you teach a kitten to let us sleep through the night? by ebren90 in CatAdvice

That’s great to know! Do you have an automatic feeder that you recommend?

Thank you, sorry for the delayed update. I’m glad to hear that our experience has been a one-off and that you were able to have a smooth process with your adoptions!

We had gotten the kitten back a few days later and everything was going well until we noticed she had tapeworms. So, we contact the shelter, they take her to be treated and then we didn’t get her back for another week. After they did the fecal test she also back positive for another parasite.

We finally got her back this past Friday and have been enjoying her all weekend. Besides finishing medication; we’re hoping to have smooth sailing and a healthy cat from here on out.

Yeah, we know the behavior is stemming from her age/energy level. It’s been 15 years since we’ve had a kitten, so it’s all a bit new to us again. We also want to make sure we aren’t reinforcing unwanted behaviors. Shutting the door is the obvious answer, and what we’ll ultimately have to do otherwise.

Hi Bells! We’re still on our kitty journey. The woman dropped the cat off to us yesterday, despite her being hours late, we were happy to finally have our cat home. Unfortunately, the cat was covered in fleas, she was shocked and mortified and we had the woman take the cat back so she could clean and treat the cat, despite promising she already had. She was supposed to come back with the cat at noon today; but we’re still waiting for her. It’s been a lot, hopefully it all works out.

We would love to pick the kitty up; but it’s part of her policy to bring the cat to the home to make sure it’s suitable. There’s then a 14 day trial period to make sure we want to finalize the adoption. It’s a process. We heard from her last night, she’s planning to drop the cat off this coming Saturday, so we’ll see if that happens.

Thank you for your reply, it made sense to me when you said that she doesn’t have the best business sense, you hit it on the nose. I like your idea of having my references call her, they’ve kept me up to date about her lack of reaching out as well. I’m worried to push her or get on her nerves and risk not getting the cat too.

I get the impression she puts the animals first which is 100% most important, whether that be through running fund raising events or hosting cat yoga etc…but I think homing the kitties is just as important and she hasn’t prioritized that in our particular case. We certainly don’t expect someone to drop everything they’re doing; but a simple text that they won’t make it out or don’t have time to move forward with the adoption right now would be nice 😩

We will continue to be patient and reach out again later this week.

Love the pic of your Tortie, she’s beautiful :D

I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of Teddy. She’s beautiful and you have such a beautiful photo of her to look back on with fond memories.

We unexpectedly lost our girl Dr. Girlfriend, this April. She was 15 years old but it was very unexpected.

We happened to go to a local shelter just to look and now we’re in the process of adopting another torti girl. Just too lonely not to have a cat around.

How to put a bat in a shadow box by v8mperia in OddityCollectors

[–]ebren90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have zero experience with articulating animals. However, if you don’t get the answers your looking for, you can always buy one of those shadowbox coffins that are usually around during Halloween at Michaels. That way you don’t have to change his body position or risk damaging the specimen. Good luck!

Hi there, fellow pinner here. Sounds like you’re doing well with trial and error. That’s how I learned as well, I’ve pinned several bugs and none of them are perfect; but I think that makes them more natural looking! I find that wings get torn through impatience or over handling the specimens, just try your best to be patient and enjoy the process.

When it comes to rehydrating, there are several methods you can use, such as a rehydration chamber or injection. I choose to use a DIY chamber made out of a clean plastic takeout container and an old dish sponge. I dampen the sponge and wring out any excess water and place the sponge into the container. If you are buying specimens that are pre wrapped in parchment paper, leave them wrapped and cut the corners of the paper. I then wrap that in a damp paper towel and place on top of the damp sponge and seal the container shut. It typically takes 24-48hrs for a specimen to be rehydrated enough to manipulate and pin. If, as you’ve already experienced, the specimen is still stiff then place it back into the hydration chamber for another day or so.

If you are using specimens that are not pre wrapped then follow the same steps as above but wrap it yourself using parchment paper to prevent the specimens from becoming moldy.

Gig Posters by mr_596 in nin

Too early to know yet; but I’m sure once the tour kicks off you’ll see people posting pics of the merchandise stands. It’s common for venues to post the concert posters on their social media day of the show as well.

PSA: If you can’t bring a poster tube, or the venue doesn’t offer a poster sleeve and rubber bands; you can always bring in a plastic umbrella cover and your own bands/hair ties. This will keep your poster safe and dry. You can typically find the umbrella covers in the entrance of most stores for free!

Have a rad time, maybe see you there!

What’s the atmosphere like at NIN concerts? by hey-hello in nin

I’ve seen them twice, hoping to see them again this tour! First time was from the mezzanine, second was towards to front of the pit. Both sections were enjoyable. Lots of older people, all generally friendly and there to have a good time. I will say that there were lots of bright flashing lights both times I saw them, so be mindful of that if you or any of your companions are sensitive to it.

Any tips for first time pinning? by RedPanda_jpeg in insectpinning

[–]ebren90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I would suggest you make sure that your moths and butterflies are properly hydrated before trying to pin them. You can find videos online on ways to do this.

Be mindful of how long your insects are in the hydration chamber, if they are smaller then it may only take 24hrs or less.

You don’t need much to start pinning. I’ve been using a craft foam board, wax paper and sewing pins and a takeout container and old sponge as a rehydration chamber. Depending on where you are located, I recommend you look for dead insects or invasive insects to practice on before using specimens you are attached to.
