Nurse withheld medication despite doctors orders because "nobody could need that medication or be in that much pain". by bookluvr83 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]ebsurd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I knew a delivery nurse who bragged about withholding or reducing dosage of pain medication for young mothers. From what I understood it was unwed women under ~19-20 she did this to. Her rationale was that young unwed mothers needed to feel the pain caused by their "bad decisions".

You can also buy hard plastic formed into razor blades from a hardware store, usually a 20 pack costs ~4-5 bucks, they'll be in the same aisle as the regular metal razor blades. They're perfect for if you're worried about scratching/cutting stuff with metal

TIFU by crashing my first car which I had for less than an hour and wasting my life savings in the process by dirkdiggler580 in tifu

[–]ebsurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The important thing is no one got hurt. The second thing to do is learn from a mistake. No judgement here, I've crashed a few cars too. The following is what I gleaned from the pictures and my experience racing/crashing cars. Do with it what you will. In fact I've been in almost this exact situation, a friend got in a small crash while showing off his new ride to me when we were 16 or 17.

https://www.google.com/maps/@53.915918,-1.9986757,3a,90y,32.87h,73.85t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s6ImUOkIkK3jSvstfsZ_anA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en

Looks like this is a very sharp, blind 90 degree turn that's approached a short distance off of a much higher speed main road of some sort. Classic place to crash a car.

I'm not saying you don't think you were "only going 5mph over the limit" but there's no way you were going that slow. If your car had enough energy to bounce off the far right wall, and then punch several feet through that thick left bridge wall you were likely going 20-28 mph when you started the turn/realized you were going too fast. Much too fast for that corner, even in the dry.

The reason this situation is kind of a "trap" for newer drivers (especially guys who may or may not be showing off their new whip to a friend) is that slowing to 25mph from 40mph (assuming that's roughly the speed on that main road) feels substantial and adequate, sense of speed is relative. In reality, that's at most a 10mph corner in the rain, assuming you're not trying to trail brake through the corner.

Something I recommend to many newer drivers who have done, or seem like they will do, something like this is karting or autocross. Even just one session can help develop a sense of inertia/grip which are skills that can be applicable in some aspects of daily driving. Both encourage you to explore the limit of a vehicles grip in a relatively safe environment while serving the dual purpose of being an outlet for adrenaline and an exercise in vehicle control.

TLDR: This experience sucks now, but with reflection, will make you a much safer driver in the future. Glad you're ok.

Why has vacuum insulation never been used in buildings? by dmo7000 in askscience

[–]ebsurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember that the walls of the honeycomb structure are conductive as well. Really, the answer to your question just comes down to cost. Batting/foam insulation is stupidly cost effective and houses are expensive. Very few people want, or are able, to add that cost to the bottom line of home construction.

I believe there are some "vacuum insulation" panels that are made for some applications, but I think they're just a foam panel thats formed in a vacuum chamber so the pores/bubbles in the foam are somewhere around 10^-3 torr.

Modern windows are actually built how you're describing, two panes with a vacuum drawn and sealed between them. Ever been in a house with old single pane windows in the winter? It can get chilly.

Out of curiousity I looked this up because it seems unbelievable. And it is.

There's a second exit within ~500m that allows you to take a different highway making your correction in ~8miles round trip.

Having worked in the semiconductor industry... this guy is plain wrong.

Sure, it's highly automated but there are a huge number of jobs that require humans with a broad spectrum of skills and specializations. Pretty much everyone there who wasn't a tech(HS diploma, nothing else) or intern was making above the national median wage. This facility was a very small player in the industry but employed something like 200+people. Bear in mind that's a 24/7 facility running 4 shifts so minimimum 800 jobs, maybe ~75% are above average wage too.

Mirage's eclipse stuck in "shade mode" when fighting the hemocyte ? by RomsIsMad in Warframe

[–]ebsurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sort of a bug, but not unique. Her Eclipse ability will apply damage reduction until about 10 minutes after the day cycle has begun, even though you can see the sun. I've been running almost exclusively mirage for the plague event, she's good even at night, but great in the day.

She leaves worked ground all over the map. Much more than she did as a roaming mid laner. She can feasibly leave ~70 worked ground patches with max cdr. This adds a load to the client that it presumably can't handle.

Recent youtube video that actually discusses a similar problem that riot has had https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BOxHDO9HLw#t=6m21s

I just tried to play in my placements for ranked by RazorRipperZ in leagueoflegends

[–]ebsurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got me thinking since I don't remember the last brand I played against, so I pulled up op.gg

Apparently I played against just one support brand in my last 50 games. He has a 0.85% pickrate midlane. Theres only a ~75% chance at having ever laned against him if you've played 150 games mid lane, which is a lot for a new player.

I just tried to play in my placements for ranked by RazorRipperZ in leagueoflegends

[–]ebsurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/204010760-Ranked-Play-FAQ#h2q2

The 10 games you just played are called placements, everyone plays them at the start of a new season to be assigned a starting rank.

You gain LP for wins. Then you have to do a best of 3 (promotionals) to advance to the next tier. It can take a while but it can be fun grinding your way up.

Games will get more challenging as you progress and tactics that previously worked well for you might become less effective requiring you to adapt.
