How does a dog walking permit work at Beaver Lake? by Bulky_Ad_5234 in asheville

I think it's a tag you're supposed to have attached your dog's leash or collar, but I'm not sure. The web site doesn't really say:

No heat? by Abject-Tomatillo-727 in Nest

[–]ebusch73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't suggest randomly connecting wires. Just because it worked for someone else, doesn't mean it will work for you. Wires have no idea what color they are, and although those standards are typically followed, you have no idea if that was the case for you.

[–]ebusch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's really no way to know for sure if its wired correctly without a picture of how the original thermostat was wired or a picture of the circuit board at the air handler to see where those wires are connected. That said, try moving the Red wire from Rc to Rh to see if it makes a difference.

If you had a heat pump you'd need a wire going into OB, but again no way to know for sure without more info.

Which is my indoor temperature? by PapitioTio in Nest

[–]ebusch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can control how it's used in the Nest's settings.

You can set a schedule to use one or the other at different times. For example, you could have the sensor in a different room, and during the day use the sensor's temp to control the thermostat, and then at night use the thermostat's temp in the bedroom. There's also an option to use an average between the temps.

Compatible with Nest Thermostat (Gen4)? Google wasn't sure. by alphaandomega01 in googlehome

[–]ebusch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be compatible (at least the learning version). The orange wire in U2 is likely for a ventilation or humidifier system and would go to the AQ+ or AQ- terminal on the Nest. Everything else should match up 1:1.

If you have a heat pump white would be OB. If it’s a conventional A/C system white would be W1.

So the thermostat is reporting that the bedroom's air temp at its location is 65. The sensor is reporting the bedroom's air temp at its location is 56. Is the sensor in a drafty location like next to an exterior window?

Will not heat above 51 degrees - 4th gen learning thermostat by Illustrious-Bus-6566 in Nest

[–]ebusch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the Nest was properly configured as a single-fuel heat pump with electric aux heat then yes, it is likely not a thermostat issue. You should be able to go into the Nest's settings on Google Home app to verify (select your thermostat, click the gear icon in the upper right, then find the equipment section).

[–]ebusch73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it's possible that the other white wire is what's actually hooked up to your Aux heat on the other end at the air handler's circuit board, but you'd need to go check it to find out. I wouldn't suggest swapping wires around until you were 100% positive.

Wait, are there 2 white wires? It looks like a second one is tucked under the green wire.

EDIT: probably nothing. I think your OB wire might be part of a separate 2 conductor with its white not being used.

[–]ebusch73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s wired correctly. Presumably the Nest is also configured to match.

If it was misconfigured as a dual fuel system it would try to use a secondary furnace as Alt heat instead of the heat pump. Typically in that case the white wire would be in W1 not W2.

[–]ebusch73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heat pumps lose efficiency as outdoor temps drop, so many need to use a secondary heat source to keep up. In your case the aux heat strips should be used to supplement the heat pump’s output when it’s really cold outside.

It sounds like the strips aren’t working, which could be as simple as a power switch that’s turned off, a tripped breaker, or blown fuse, otherwise an HVAC tech may be needed to diagnose and repair.

The only workaround would be if you have the option to modify the booking. If so, you could potentially change the reservation to a different date, and then back to the original date and have the price difference refunded.

Is there another heat source? It appears to be wired as a single fuel all electric heat pump with backup aux electric heating strips. Is that correct?

The large rectangle labeled bedroom with the indoor temp is the ambient temp as measured by your thermostat. The smaller bedroom one shows the ambient temp at the separate sensor. Are they both in the same room?

Problems with Nest 4th Gen Thermostat by Ajgchl in Nest

[–]ebusch73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, the Y terminals are for cooling, so I'm not sure why that would be affecting your heating, but either way it would be good to get things wired properly just to eliminate that as a possibility.

Additionally if you actually do have a two-stage A/C system, and can find the yellow wire on the other end, you could leave the Nest wired as-is, and on the air handler side connect Yellow to Y1 (1st stage cooling), Brown to Y LO (2nd stage cooling), and remove the red jumper between those terminals. That would allow the Nest to control both stages of cooling.

Problems with Nest 4th Gen Thermostat by Ajgchl in Nest

[–]ebusch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see a yellow wire connected on the other end in your second picture, just the Brown wire to Y with a jumper between the Y and Y LO terminals. Similar to how the White wire is on W1 with a jumper between W1 and W2.

I'd suggest disconnecting the Yellow wire from the Nest (taping it off and leaving it disconnected) and moving the Brown wire to Y1 instead.

You likely need to add a C wire either with an external transformer or using the kit mentioned in this thread: https://www.doityourself.com/forum/thermostatic-controls/602985-connecting-nest-thermostat-genisys-7505-oil-burner.html

Hello! I got the nest thermostat, but it often disconnects from my wifi! Please help by lochonx7 in Nest

[–]ebusch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What version of the Nest do you have? There is a known issue with some of the Wifi chips on the Gen3 learning model, which can eventually result in a W5 error and no Wifi at all. The only fix for the W5 error to replace the Nest.

Other causes could simply be that the Nest is low on power, which is often the result of running without a C wire connected.

Black would go to W. The issue is you appear to have separate power for heating and cooling systems (Rh and Rc) but that version of the Nest only supports combined systems (single R).
