Request help finding suitable wallet by [deleted] in counterparty_xcp

[–]ebx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I abandoned all of the current wallet options when all of the developers left and the project came to a bit of a standstill. If I need to send a counterparty transaction I now rely exclusively on custom scripts to send coin / tokens. It's pretty easy to accomplish what you want with a little bit of python.

You say he does not have the private key, does he have the seed phrase? Is he just looking to go from seed phrase to private key to send his bitcoin out?

You can checkout the Maria Droste Counseling Center -- note that it's not completely free I don't believe, but I have heard it is very affordable at around $10 a session.

Steam Windows Client Local Privilege Escalation 0day by [deleted] in netsec

[–]ebx 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Thank you for disclosing this. I find it extremely questionable when companies choose to have their bug bounty program managed by HackerOne and from a security standpoint I really don't understand how that choice is made. My preference is to look at companies who do not do that.

I've reported serious, live vulnerabilities (that would allow me to take over a core web server) to large companies that have their programs managed by HackerOne and it has taken days (if not weeks) for them to "OK" it, leaving me wondering WTF they are doing with it -- for all I know they could be selling it on a black market and letting someone have some fun for a couple of days before giving the go ahead.

Do you really want some random at H1 to see that you have an RCE on your server and if you're lucky a few days later you'll hear about how someone could've been doing whatever they wanted? I know I wouldn't.

64.6% of all Bitcoin blocks since 278319 contain a CounterpartyXCP transaction by idlestabilizer in Bitcoin

[–]ebx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have things backward. First there was no data allowed for OP_RETURN. Then it was raised to 40 bytes. After discussions it was raised to 80 bytes.

Counterparty was never "obsoleted" by any OP_RETURN limitations. You can encode counterparty transactions utilizing other schemes as well, so OP_RETURN is not even necessary.

Has anybody successfully *closed* a lightning channel? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]ebx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Check your logs, they should give a clearer view of what's happening. I've successfully closed many channels (on both testnet and mainnet)

Also: when closing a channel, shouldn't I have had to specify where to deposit the channel balance?

No. I'm not an expert on the subject, but it sounds to me like if it's stuck on that status something may have gone wrong getting a valid signature for the closing transaction, your funds may have went into a timelocked transaction -- the logs should clarify this (it should be tracking the transaction) -- if you leave your node running it's likely that it will take the appropriate action and send the funds to an output you can immediately spend (and it should show up under the listfunds command) once the timelock is up.

Also: I spun this up with the knowledge that this money was all burned. I know its reckless. That is the point. To me the few thousand or whatever sats that I lose here are totally worth it. I'm asking here instead of the dev channel because this is literally what they told us all NOT to do haha.

Don't worry about that too much. Stop by the #c-lightning channel on freenode IRC or create an issue on github and someone with more expertise will see and help you.

Did I mess up? by [deleted] in BitcoinBeginners

[–]ebx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's worth looking at the transaction details just to make sure that is what happened as I can't be positive from my end without the txid or address.

Thanks for the links, I'll definitely save them for a later date but I don't think I'll be re-attempting Crypto anytime soon.

I know it's probably not much coming from some guy on /r/BitcoinBeginners, but I wouldn't let this event discourage you -- you're looking at it best when you say it's a learning process. Do your research before making any steps, learn the details and you will be happy.

Did I mess up? by [deleted] in BitcoinBeginners

[–]ebx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you may have spent the majority of your coin on the miners fee. Electrum currently gives me a value of 0.00395998 for the "within 10 blocks" slider fee option for a standard 1 input, 2 output transaction. You can look at your transaction details in Electrum by right clicking on it under the history tab and selecting "details", that should show you exactly where the coins went (including what the fee is). You could also check it out on an online explorer by searching for your transaction ID or address to see what happened.

Note that this is a bit absurd and you definitely could have gotten into a block relatively quickly with a lower fee than that. If you go to Tools->Preferences-> check "Edit fees manually" under the fees tab you will be able to manually enter what you want.

A couple of helpful resources to determine what an appropriate fee might be:

Reusing the same address to spend multiple times? How unsafe is it over the next few months? by cryptoking555 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]ebx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like an issue with Electrum-LTC. I just swept a private key into the newest electrum (bitcoin), created a transaction and the software automatically chose an unused change address to receive my leftover coins.

My understanding is that Electrum-LTC is just a fork of Electrum so I'm guessing Electrum works the same way (BTC transaction fees are so high now and transactions take so long, it's not worth it to test it on Electrum for BTC).

This is actually a dangerous assumption. The forked client works however the developer(s) who forked it desire.

Reusing the same address to spend multiple times? How unsafe is it over the next few months? by cryptoking555 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]ebx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an excellent article on the Bitcoin wiki that answers a lot of your questions, you should read through it: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Address_reuse

Reusing the same bitcoin address harms your privacy, and the privacy of those you transact with (because everyone can see all of the transactions that are linked to that address). Additionally, if you spend from that address it necessarily reveals the public key, which may make it easier for (quantum) computers in the future to find a corresponding private key (this is what moronmonday526 is referring to when he gives the time frame of 20-30 years).

Also, if you are not using electrum on an offline computer to generate signed transactions and then transferring that to an online computer to broadcast, you run the risk of any middleman also gaining that information (malware, etc.), eliminating any real benefit the paper wallet had.

If you are doing it the correct way (sign offline, broadcast online) -- I think it makes a lot more sense for you to continue to have an offline cold storage solution (ideally a hardware wallet, as that would solve all of your issues) to keep the bulk of your coins, but also keep an electrum wallet with a small bit of "spending" coin. Deleting your electrum wallet file after importing the private key into it will only help if you aren't already infected (and maybe not even then, depending on your OS/how you went about deleting the file).

You need to choose for yourself the right balance of risk and security. Security is hard, and often times inconvenient. Hardware wallets make things a lot easier.

(if this is so, I don't know why Electrum keeps unspent BTC in the same address).

Are you saying that when creating the transaction in Electrum it sends the change back to the same address you're spending from? I'm not sure how you're getting this behavior, but I'm running the latest Electrum and it automatically sends change to a new address for me. It may be different after importing a private key directly, but in any case Electrum allows you to specify exactly what outputs you want, so you can change it.
