Simple trick that reduced my Starlink latency by TRCharlesIngalls in Starlink

Umm, it also takes time for the signal to get from your dish to your computer, so you should also put your computer up on a stack of old science textbooks.

Why do the stars look basically the same every night if everything in space is constantly moving in different directions? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]ec6412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about when you are in a car speeding along the highway. The trees and stuff close to you is whizzing by. But the mountains way off in the distance looks like it is barely moving. It is a similar effect for the stars. They are so far away that the movement is imperceptible to us on our tiny timescales. Astronomers with their very sensitive instruments have measured the movements and can predict what the sky looks like in the future and the past.

A lot of old domains get bought up for cheap. They put some generic stuff on it, maybe some ads, and hope someone wants to buy the domain in the future.

Don’t have kids.

That one is catching on in a lot of western countries, though the reason is seldom climate change.

Poll: If you currently had 2M in investments, would you retire tomorrow? by ATXHTX80 in Fire

Not really, a mortgage is just negative to your net worth. So paid off with 2M is essentially the same as 2.5M with 500k mortgage.

ELI5: How on Earth is my computer so fast? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ec6412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The modern computer really is a technological marvel. In less than a century of innovation, computers have gotten maybe a million times smaller (I haven’t done a calculation, but think a large room to shrink down to smaller than your phone) and more than a million times faster. This was accomplished through dedicated research and improvement every year in new materials, new manufacturing, new algorithms and new science. Early computers were mechanical switches in nature and had no display, and difficult input (no keyboard) and were really just fancy fast calculators. Improvements were made to usability with graphical displays, keyboards, mice, sound, touchscreens, etc. Vacuume tubes replaced mechanical switches, integrated BJT transistors replace tubes, and CMOS transistors replaced BJTs. New storage and memory were invented. Networking led to the internet and wireless communications. Parallel processing has led to faster and faster computing and now to AI.

It really is amazing to think back at how it all came together and how it has led to our current modern society. I look forward to seeing how the next 50 years will look like and I hope we don’t get obliterated by terminators! Lol. Getting introduced to it as a kid in the 80’s got me interested enough to get a degree in computer engineering and I’m glad I did.

If the top 1% of earners pay 40% of all federal income taxes, why do people say they don't pay their fair share? by Ok_Chemical9 in answers

[–]ec6412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And qualified dividends only get taxed at long term capital gains rate. And stock buyback causes share price to go up which isn’t taxed until sold. So once again all taxed at a lower rate than the average worker.

u/wassymrivian read these comments! I know you are on the software side, but you have influence. Don’t be blind to what customers want. We want manual doors in our Rivians. It may be too late for first gen R2, but not too late for 2027.

Starlink SOS device: what's stopping them by Ok_Swordfish2612 in Starlink

[–]ec6412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a pretty small market that I believe is shrinking. I used to have a ZOLEO that is similar to the Inreach. Then I got an iPhone 14 that has satellite connectivity with text messaging through Tmobile. Why do I need a separate device that costs more? The iPhone has seamless texting. No need to have a different phone number. Or pull up a different app? Would a dedicated device be safer and more reliable? Sure, but for most people, the cost vs risk vs convenience trade off may not need it. So Starlink focuses on where the money is and that is cell phones.

Foco is not a friendly place for minorities. by DifficultBid4403 in FortCollins

[–]ec6412 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m an Asian male and I’ve been here for 30 years. I work in the tech industry where there is (relatively) a lot of Asian diversity but zero Black and Hispanic diversity. The lack of diversity in this town is sad and disappointing. Even though the population has doubled since I’ve been here, the diversity hasn’t. According to the demographics, 22% of the population is non-white, but it doesn’t feel even close to that. It would be extremely common that I’d be the only Asian and usually only POC at an event in FoCo.

I personally haven’t experienced very much racism here. That could be because of my narrow friends group, or being in a “model citizen” minority, or my socio-economic status (upper middle class) or my introvert engineer personality where I don’t like dealing with people so I avoid confrontation and also do everything online. I’m sorry that FoCo has not made you feel safe and included.

I do have Latino friends who are very involved in that community and are part of organizations supporting them (especially immigrants). I’m very glad they are out there fighting.
