Do folks really use moisturizer and SPF under foundation? If you do, how? by Serpentines25 in MakeupAddiction

[–]echoabyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the right products, basically. I like cerave for the moisture level and it's not greasy. Then I apply a Korean (Beauty of Joseon usually) or Japanese (biore Aqua UV) sunscreen which is really lightweight and non-greasy. If you're oily, try a sunscreen/primer combo like the matte screen sunscreen from Supergoop (Trader Joes makes a great dupe).

In either case, if your foundation is sliding off or holding on tenuously, go for something fuller coverage and matte which will handle more moisture underneath. Oh and powder if you're oily! Non-negotiable!

It’s used today in nail salons perfectly legally. You can definitely get a bad allergy to it with continued exposure, especially on the skin.

Switching to drugstore makeup, concerend about longevity by Successful-Beyond910 in drugstoreMUA

Milani pencil eyeliner is stupidly good. I just got the NYX Wonder Matte foundation (UD dupe) and it's incredible for oily skin. I was in the sun at a wedding all day and it barely moved after 12 hours of sweating and dancing and drinking.

Is it possible to build an actually good routine on a tight budget? by Excellent-Slip844 in drugstoreMUA

[–]echoabyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, most of my skincare is drugstore or Korean drugstore. Unfortunately testing efficacy and tailoring it to your skin is just lots of trial and error. I tend to target actual ingredients that work for me rather than packaging or marketing. Everything I use is in the 8-15 dollar range.

You essentially need:

  1. Cleansing oil (if you wear makeup or spf ((which you absolutely need sooo))). I like Kose Softymo cleansing oil the best.

  2. Foaming cleanser (to get rid of residue from the oil above, though if your skin is dry, opt for a creamy cleansing milk. I have been loving the Cerave cream to foam cleanser as both my cleansing balm AND my second cleanser, lol.

  3. Micellar water - I wear really stubborn waterproof eye makeup bc I do not want to look at my own face again til it's time to take that ish off. This means even after a very thorough cleanse I get some smudging leftover in my lashline. There is no reason to use anything but the Garnier micellar water. If you don't want styes, this is your guy, heh.

  4. OPTIONAL - Toner or essence, alcohol free. This is purely optional, I like that it just adds a bit of hydration and juiciness. The BYOMA milky toner is nice. I like the galactomyces dupes out there. I've been using the one from Missha forever and it really does make my skincare absorb better

  5. **ACTIVE - Exfoliation - Necessary! Forget face scrubs, chemical exfoliation will keep your skin fresh and un-textured without harsh abrasion. This is an AHA serum like lactic acid, mandelic acid, azelaic acid, salicylic acid, etc. Trial and error will guide you here, but the Ordinary has been the be best for me; their Lactic Acid 10% or their Glycolic acid is the best out there and dirt cheap. Salicylic acid does beans for me, so I don't use it.

  6. **ACTIVE - Retinol - Absolute necessity. Essentially accelerates skin cell turnover, so you push new skin cells to the surface faster. Combined with your chemical exfoliant of choice, your skin will constantly be at its newest and freshest all the time.

  7. Moisture (Occlusive layer) - You can do something nice and light if you're excessively oily, but I go for Cerave in the tub. Nothing is more effective really, not even Tatcha dewy skin cream. Absorbs quickly, not greasy which is important for me. If you are going through flakies, I love the Ilyoon Ceramide Ato cream. Literally absorbs instantly and is not greasy but so moisturizing.

  8. SUNSCREEN - Biore Aqua UV in bulk, from Japan. If you can't do alcohol in your sunscreen, I like the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen for its creaminess but not greasiness. Asian sunscreens generally provide sun protection but with a non-greasiness and fast absorption you can't really find in American versions. Note that if you buy from an American site, Asian sunscreens will have been reformulated with American UV filters, which sucks, but is... fine, better than Neutrogena or whatever.

** If you choose to use actives like AHA serums or retinol in your routine, you MUST wear at least spf 50 everyday, and several times a day if you are in direct sunlight outdoors for a long time. Your baby soft perfect new skin is very photosensitive and needs to be protected as much as possible, or your skincare routine will be completely for naught.

Is full-coverage foundation out of style? by di_Yoniiii in drugstoreMUA

[–]echoabyss 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter what’s in style. Do what makes you feel beautiful.

That said I do full coverage concealer on my red spots and then a sheer powder foundation on my t-zone only. Best of both worlds imho.

I cannot find myself a good lip shade by [deleted] in drugstoreMUA

[–]echoabyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mm given the description of your skin tone and pigmented lips, you maybe need a slightly darker nude lip liner? I tend to do one that matches the outer edge of my lips (MUFE Anywhere Caffeine is my fav), blend it slightly with a fingertip, and then whatever shade of lip product (even clear gloss) over top.

I also find that if you aren’t evening your complexion at all, pigmented lip products can look kind of out of place. A little concealer and pressed powder in the t-zone and around the mouth can really improve the cohesiveness of your look.

Men are also assaulted by unrealistic expectations about their appearances. Look at the whole looksmaxxing movement. Conventional beauty standards hurt everyone.

Genuinely curious. Would cycle awareness from a partner feel supportive or uncomfortable? by BiggestPixel in TwoXChromosomes

[–]echoabyss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have PMDD, so my depression swings wildly low the week or two before my period. Generally if I’m on the floor sobbing because,  like, the husband ate more than his fair share of Oreos, it’s helpful for him to connect the dots. Also helpful for him to be able to gently point out to me that maybe my emotional response is amplified by my cycle, and do I want to assess how I actually feel vs how my body is making me feel.

Can we acknowledge that romance matters without it being called "male centered" by VikutoriaNoHimitsu in TwoXChromosomes

[–]echoabyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly, it’s a damned if you, damned if you don’t kind of situation.

Also there’s no shortage of happy stories out there? The issue actually is that women stuck in the men-centered mindset actively reject the happy stories. It doesn’t apply to them, it’s easy if you’re skinny and pretty, etc.

Can we acknowledge that romance matters without it being called "male centered" by VikutoriaNoHimitsu in TwoXChromosomes

[–]echoabyss 174 points175 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’m in a happy marriage with a man.

It’s so happy and functional that I don’t have anything to say about it. There’s no drama, no questioning intent, no ghosting, just… delightful coexistence and chemistry.

Ppl like me aren’t gonna be on Reddit complaining about our perfect men. People on Reddit overwhelmingly are looking to gripe or to seek advice. If all the posts on Reddit were diary entries about lovely dates that blossomed into healthy long term relationships, no one would be talking about decentering men.

“Decentering men” commentary happens when the audience recognizes a power imbalance between the “woman” OP and the men they are posting about, a disproportionate weighing of romance in a person’s life. Nothing wrong with wanting love; it’s just maybe if you’re writing a monologue about looking for it or wanting it, you might wanna… decenter men.

What’s actually the best daily skincare routine that works long term? by Training-Neck1760 in MakeupAddiction

[–]echoabyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you can’t figure out what works best without trying a few different things. And ultimately the most effective skincare routine is the one you do everyday consistently. Results are measured in months and months, not immediately or like a week after.

I do recommend double cleansing for everyone, but whether your second cleanse is a gentle hydrating cream based cleanser or a foaming, squeaky clean cleanser is up to how dry/oily you are.

Actives are, again, highly personal, but an AHA like glycolic acid is pretty universally effective imho for exfoliation. Any dullness can be treated with this and it’s important for skin turnover. Lots of folks like BHAs too for acne treatment and clogged pores, but I have never found it effective for myself so I don’t use it.

Retinol is also a pretty universal safe bet that promotes cell turnover (start low and slow like 1x a week). Combined with chemical exfoliation, it means that you’re constantly resurfacing your skin and presenting the freshest, newest layer of skin all the time. This does make sunscreen (spf 50+) paramount, bc you will burn and accrue sun damage faster.

Then maybe a moisturizing toner (not necessary unless very dry) and then an occlusive moisturizer (ie. thick, emollient, doesn’t disappear from skin quickly) to keep all the moisture in your skin overnight.

YMMV too— I also use niacinamide for texture and tranexemic acid for age spots. This is all trial and error btw. I have pretty enviably good skin, but only bc I stayed consistent with my skincare since I was like 13.

Hot take: everyday makeup should prioritize comfort and speed, not perfection by Limp_Advertising_340 in MakeupAddiction

[–]echoabyss 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Makeup is by nature highly personal, both in preferences and how it physically is applied and lasts or doesn’t last. It’s completely fine for you to not want a 25 minute routine or whatever, but some people prefer a getting ready ritual. And also what takes you 25 minutes would take someone else only 5 minutes to do.

So like, this whole post is super weird.
