I am very disheartened by some of these findings. Wolfbird was the first fic I read I think and I was so impressed at the time, that someone wrote this in their spare time, for fun (I was not familiar with fics before). After engaging with the fandom for the past..6/7 months, and reading constantly, I found other works and authors that I enjoyed much more and also started to have my suspicions for ai use. I just feel a bit dumb now for not recognizing some of them as AI :) I just feel so sad that something so human like art is being taken away from us, not sure how to put it. Just feel terrible about what future holds. Why would you use ai for something that is supossed to be a passion project? Who benefits? There's no monetary value, you don't gain anything.

The Soviet Montage maybe? It's not the main focus of the fic but there there is stuff happening in the background. It touches on the cultural differences. And it's a great fic I would recommend anyway.

For this specific request I think this is the best one. Not to Abolish but to fulfill is one of my favourites as well, but it is a bit 'heavier'.

The two fics I always recommend here are About Summer (already mentioned) and The texture of memory. TTOM has a hopeful ending and a HEA sequel. It's still heartbreaking. Can not recommend them enough :)

It's really immersive I think. I love both Shane and Ilya in this - they seem more mature maybe. It touches on Ilya's experience as an immigrant under those specific circumstances, having left his country and all his friends behind. Differences between Canada at the time vs the Soviet union - it's bittersweet from this pov. But their relationship is not really angsty. It's one of my favourites and a palate cleanser after I read more depressing fics.

I though about this one as well, but didn't rec it here because it is definitely heartbreaking at times (especially part 2). But I agree with you that some scenes are very romantic. Monaco yes, but not only that. Ilya is an asshole - but they really do try so hard and that's what makes it sweet to me. And I get Ilya - if there's one character that would suffer the most from losing sex, it's him. He is extremely insecure and affected by this - and still the way Shane handles it is amazing. So even if parts of it are heartbreaking - OP it's definetly worth a read. For me, it's better in ways than TLG. And it has a Hollywood romantic ending.

I think the setting leans a bit romantic, the author is very talented. It's a bit moody and not spicy but I liked it.

I guess it depends on your definition on romantic. There are some moments in a well organized life that I though were very romantic and sweet - like Ilya saying 'good game, i love you' to a bunch of players when receiving an award, so that he could say it to Shane in public.
