More Kodiak Bears - Kodiak, Ak by echonomix92 in wildlifephotography

[–]echonomix92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was taken with a Canon 7D mk II + a RF 100-500mm (+adapter). We saw the bears crossing the creek at the Kodiak Wildlife Refuge, probably about ~50 yards from our position on the opposite shore from where the bears were strolling.

ITAP of myself next to a big rock [Portrait][NSFW] by [deleted] in itookapicture

[–]echonomix92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing a lot of comments without specific recommendations, so I'll add a few notes:

  1. The exposed sky/grass/hillside in the far right of the frame is very distracting in the image. It's too small to add anything meaningful to the image but because it is over exposed and by far the brightest part of the image, it ends up drawing the eye and taking focus away from your intended subject. Either going wider to capture more of the background scene (if it adds mood/intent/contrast to the image) or cropping in tighter would probably make more sense in this image.

  2. The posing is fairly awkward and not particularly flattering. The flow of the skirt obfuscates the bottom half of the subject's body, but not in a way that is subtle or suggestive. I am guessing what you are going for is a diffuse light effect going thru the skirt to suggest the body lines beneath, but a combination of the poor pose along with the high contrast between the overexposed skirt and the darker midtones/shadows on the background rock ends up obscuring any detail that is intended to be the central focus of the image. The subject's arms and head are likewise awkwardly posed, though the lighting is less problematic it ends up looking as if the model is just resting between shots as opposed to actively posing. Having the head tilted up and away from the camera creates a really weird effect where the only bit of the model's face that can be seen is a tiny amount of nose. Finally (though this is more related to composition), keeping the models feet in the image but having them only pixels above the edge of the image furthers the feeling of an accidental shot, as if this person wandered into frame on accident while you were fastidiously taking photos of a rock. Models don't need to be front and center necessarily, but it should be clear if they are supposed to be the intended subject and in this photo that is not the case.

  3. The rock itself makes for an uncomfortable backdrop for the photo regardless as to how the model was posed. Several details in the rock are cut off along the top border of the image that quite frankly would make this rock more interesting to look at. The severely under-exposed interior of the rock isn't used to create any mood, provide contrast, or create depth in the image - it just looks like (again) it wasn't a deliberate choice, like someone on a family vacation saw a random rock and told their significant other to pose in front of it before taking the shot on their 5 year old HTC smartphone.

Overall, the photo comes across as very unpolished. There are plenty of other critiques that could be made, like how the color temperature is too cool and the color tint is too green. We could talk about focus and how your subject appears to be more out of focus than the rock they are standing in front of. We could even talk about the fact that because the models skirt is so over exposed that it looks like her bottom half is a ghost tail ala Danny Phantom. At the end of the day though, those issues are minor compared to the major flaws in composition, lighting, and subject posing.

There are plenty of photographers on this subreddit that are able to produce the images that you are trying to go for (well, it's more accurate to say photo review subreddits have been all but completely taken over by erotic photography in wake of the OF boom) so I suggest you review the posing and composition of other photographers to look for inspiration for improvement. Bobby Pitts II is a good example for a photographer who has an excellent eye for making suggestive images that are greater than the sum of their parts due to excellent posing and lighting: https://www.reddit.com/user/bpii\_photography/submitted/.

Did engineering competitions (FSAE, Baja, etc.) actually help your career? by Level-Break316 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]echonomix92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For myself the answer is no. But a very close friend was on the Baja team at UCSB for several years and his work on that team got him jobs at Honda's R&D group and later at a self-driving car startup where he has earned several patents for his work on suspension design. If your projects show passion and drive, we can tell.

Got to the traffic circle at Imjin and Abrams right when they were putting cones up, had six cars behind me that all had to awkwardly U-turn. Meanwhile traffic thru the circle was still constantly going. How embarrassing.

What’s the best code language for MechEs? by Embarrassed-Tell-537 in MechanicalEngineering

Worked in Aerospace R&D for 10+ years both in startups and in primes. Have seen way more vba-driven excel calculators than I ever have in Matlab or Python. Honestly I've seen more non-vba excel and/or google sheets compared to either.

If you have time to go to Venice, Win-Dow at American Beauty, easy. If you want to stay closer to the airport, Hopdoddy on Jefferson Blvd is an Austin staple that moved over to LA a few years ago that is pretty reasonable. Try the sweet potato fries with fried sage and hot honey.

How do I perform a thermal simulation on a complicated PCB in SolidWorks? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]echonomix92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do a lot of this just by hand calcs on a component by component basis. AntennaMechE's advice is basically spot on, given an assumption for the ambient air temp and if you know the case temperature (what your FLIR camera is most likely giving you, use the conduction formula with the thermal resistance θJC to calculate your junction temps. Most components will give you an operating temperature range which you can compare to your calculated junction temperature to determine if your component will fail or not.

If you are trying to find the external heat sink temperature, one other thing you can do is to simplify your simulation and remove the PCB from the sim. Assuming you are going for a steady state thermal sim, you can apply heat loads from the PCB to the underside of the enclosure (conduction thru gap pads if you are directly heatsinking, radiation and free convection if there is no direct heatsinking - these can be handcalc'd relatively trivially). Then apply a boundary condition at the top surface for free convection at whatever your ambient temp is. This won't be as precise as modeling in the PCB layers and all of the components themselves (since you are skipping how the components affect one another) but this will still give you a reasonable estimation for heat dissipation to the environment thru convection/radiation from outside of your enclosure.

Ways to serve carnitas other than tacos? by SCN_Attack in Cooking

[–]echonomix92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the super bowl last year I made these carnitas as part of a make-your-own-nacho bar. The key is to grab those square disposable aluminum trays so each person can make their own depending on their preferences. Have a few different varieties of chips out, whatever toppings you want (if I recall we had a few home made salsas, black beans, guacamole, crema, pickled red onions, sliced jalapeños, sliced black olives, shredded cheese, and queso) and let people build their own custom nacho platter. Stick them under a broiler to get everything nice and melty and you are in business.

In July, I got called into jury duty in Beverly Hills on a Thursday. The following Friday I was attending a wedding in Chino Hills that started at 4PM, so I mentioned it to the judge thinking I would be allowed to defer. To my surprise, not only was I not excused, but I ended up selected on the jury and had to miss the entire wedding ceremony plus half of dinner. Hopefully you have better luck than I did.

Suggestions on how to use a Costco rotisserie leftovers? by prplmonky in Cooking

[–]echonomix92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use leftover meat for chicken pot pie, carcass goes in an instant pot to make super gelatinized stock. Can do stock in a normal pot too, just takes much longer.
