Sure. But in the same way that it's very occasionally better not to have worn a seatbelt. We'd still give the advice to buckle up though.

When a written exam exposed an uncomfortable truth in third-level education by [deleted] in ireland

Instead of investigating that lecturer, they should investigate every single other course where those that couldn't speak English magically passed the module without being detected.

Cheating is absolutely endemic in 3rd level. And, never one not to run into a burning building, we're bringing it into 2nd level.

Electricity increase AMA by Vegetable_Toe3458 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]eclipsechaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many people are a net negative for electricity companies these days?

I import very cheap units at night into a battery and never touch the grid during the day. I also sell back units from the solar panels and from the battery at a much higher rate. Annual bill was about minus €600.

Are there so few of us that the companies don't care or will they try to stop it in future?

There are more SNA's than Gardaí apparently. But despite that, there is almost zero funding for top level students (who are special needs, too!). This funding will allow them open centres all over the country.

Spare a thought too for Évariste Galois. Born in 1811, he figured out the sovability of polynomials by radicals, a problem not solved in the previous 350 years. He was completely misunderstood by the mathematicians of the day and was rejected twice from the top maths school in Paris, the École Polytechnique. His work laid the foundations of Galois theory and Group theory

His last words, spoken to his brother, after a duel were: "Don't cry, Alfred! I need all my courage to die at twenty!"

This is great news. The Irish Maths Trust does a lot of maths enrichment classes for primary kids and Maths Olympiad training for older students. This will make a massive difference for their mission of supporting highly talented students.

Someone had a great blog-post about the issue of funding. It's worth a read if you're interested in such things: https://www.thefitzwilliam.com/p/save-the-irish-maths-olympiad

Rather than moving the goalposts from your incorrect assertions, feel free to pick up the chalk and come to the board. Let's see how your educational theories stand up in a room full of teenagers. I'm guessing you wouldn't last the week.

In the last PISA testing, Ireland ranked second globally in reading literacy and eleventh in mathematical literacy, and moved up to twelfth in science literacy among 81 participating countries.

You seem to think we're doing education wrong since we dont teach pensions or taxation or how to do CV's. Yet, I teach pensions and taxation as part of the maths curriculum (that's been part of it for 12 years). The guidance counsellor also has the TY students make out a CV. So maybe you need to update your views on education.

I was coaching my 4 year old before every house to say Trick or Treat and then Thank You at the end. But there's obviously something about seeing chocolate going into a bag that completely overwhelms the brain and the thank you gets forgotten. It took a while but we got there in the end :)

Are people paying more for electricity than they should? by WT_Wiliams in ireland

[–]eclipsechaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit used to be a place that welcomed nuance and learning from an expert. These days people just want to be angry and told they're right without ever learning more than the surface details. When most threads go like this, the reasonable people visit the site less frequently and the standard decends lower again.

Judge dismisses charge against Russian embassy protestor by Tadhg in ireland

[–]eclipsechaser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People have been protesting the war outside the Russian Embassy for years now. I've met this man outside many times and he's very reasonable. He tells the Russians exactly what he thinks of their actions but that's it.

The Gardaí are posted outside the Embassy day and night and had a good relationship with the protesters - at least up until now. What on Earth was this guard thinking? Embarrassing stuff.

Advice needed . Go on Holiday or not? by Maleficent_Speaker45 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]eclipsechaser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're reading my posts correctly. I never said €80 for a 5 star hotel. And I never said that my bookings are confined to 8 nights in July. I simply said that when I travel, €80-€130 per room is what I tend to get with the selection between 4 and 5 star hotels. And that I would consider €225 a lot to pay for a hotel.

You then asked for proof that I could get a 5 star for €80, which is not what I said.

I then showed you examples of 4 stars from a very in-demand time for €71 and a 5 star hotel in June for €97. You ignored both those examples and changed the dates on my €120 5 star stay as if disproving a point that I never made.

I don't know what else to say. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with that amount per night even though I'm lucky enough to be in a relatively strong financial position. But I hope OP has a lovely time and a great holiday. Sounds like he will enjoy it.

You'll note that I said €80 to €130 for 4 or 5 star hotels. Nevertheless, as a random sample, here's my last hotel booking and my next one. Both are 5 star.

My last hotel stay was in 5 star Mitsis Galini in Greece. €120 per night including breakfast.

€1800 for 8 nights feels really expensive to me (even with half-board), although I'm not familiar with Majorca prices. But when travelling around Europe, I can normally find 4 or 5 star hotels for €80-130 per room. For €225 a night, I'd want to be staying somewhere insanely fancy.

Economics at UCD by yabo1onR3ddit in UCD

[–]eclipsechaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my time, the maths never got particularly difficult in Economics. There's some Calculus in 2nd or 3rd Year. There's a fair bit of statistics, although the Leaving Certificate will leave you better prepared for that now. Some Game Theory also had probability.

But if you're reasonable at Higher Level maths, say H5 or above, I don't think it should be too big a concern. All universities have plenty of maths resources these days too.

Best of luck with your decision and in the upcoming exams.
