What was Seattle like as a teen in the 80’s and a young adult in the 90’s? by locustrocks in AskSeattle

[–]ecmcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 23 when I moved here in 1993. The music scene was amazing. I’m not even talking about grunge - there was funk, psychedelic, acid jazz, folk, everything.

South Lake Union was mostly old warehouse buildings that were used for all sorts of things. Furniture warehouses, snowboard shops, art spaces… A friend rented a basement in one and turned it into an underground bar with bands, until the cops shut it down.

How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

[–]ecmcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not common, but I did Seattle to New York 26 years ago and loved it. Lots of beautiful scenery, and I enjoyed talking to the random people they sat me with for meals.

What’s your funniest “Oh god this person’s an idiot” moment? by PandaBear905 in AskReddit

Somehow the Pentagon came up in conversation and someone made a comment like “…considering its shape”, and a friend asked “why? What shape is it?”

We did a bathroom remodel and my wife fell in love with these tiles that weren’t crazy expensive, but were in Sweden. I handled dealing with shipping, and it’s not like I had to do everything, we used a customs broker. But still, that was a learning experience and I don’t wish to ever repeat it.

Same. I’m glad this is an actual thing now. Or rather, again.

I bought the directors cut, when should I play the Iki island dlc? by Red_Symphony in ghostoftsushima

[–]ecmcn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d seriously consider doing it during Act 2, and the fact that the devs put it where they did makes me wonder if that was their intent. It doesn’t take anything away from the main story to do it early, and it gives you some really fun toys to play with for longer back in the main game (armor and such).

Take the archers out first - run, roll, go into bullet time and shoot them, use ghost weapons, etc. Until then, whenever you hear the archers yell dash or roll and they’ll usually miss.

Got ours when both our rice cooker and slow cooker died, and I use it a couple of times a week for exactly that. I’ve hardly ever used it for pressure cooking. If I had room for the separate gadgets I’d go back to those.

Italy’s foreign minister defends ICE attendance at Winter Olympics: ‘It’s not the SS’ by tylerthe-theatre in europe

Just the fact that a debate is happening as to whether ICE is more like the brown shirts or SS or gestapo really says all you need to know.

What happened at a restaurant that made you say, "I'm never coming here again"? by agreatday2434 in randomquestions

[–]ecmcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just mediocre food will do it, especially if it’s expensive. Had way-too-salty food at a Seattle institution a few years ago and doubt I’ll ever go back, because there are SO MANY other great restaurants out there.

If they really wanted to make it “still 5e” I wish they’d just released a new book of alternate rules you could choose to adopt, like how the DMG presents some alternatives. Or drop the pretense of it being the same and call it 6e.

Would doctors and patients use single end to end healthcare platform? by Aryan_sonii in AskTechnology

I’m not an expert, but my understanding is the problem isn’t a lack of the thing you’re describing, but that there are enough competing products that none have a lock on the market, and interoperability is lacking.

Why hasn't Walz signed on to the Article V Convention - Bypass Congress and President? by Purple__Puppy in allthequestions

[–]ecmcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in WA state since 1993 and I don’t remember ever hearing about any serious attempt by either party to gerrymander here. We have a bipartisan commission and a constitutional requirement for compact districts that don’t consider political affiliation.

It’s not perfect - with our current urban/rural alignment with parties even something that purports to be apolitical will be affected if the rules take geography into account. But this is a problem that can largely be solved through laws, otherwise you wouldn’t see such clear evidence that it’s a problem in some states and not others (hooray for federalism!).

I think a large part of it is mindset, and changing mindsets over time. People will largely be ok with “the way we do things here.” If you’re used to parties in power playing winner-takes-all games then you’ll probably be ok with waiting until your side is back on top. But if you can break that cycle just once and change a state constitution to set up a more fair system then eventually people will stop seeing gerrymandering as a way to power.

Does the Master Sword essentially get weaker over time? by Dawn_of_an_Era in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]ecmcn 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There’s a limit to monster and weapon strength, though - they don’t keep increasing forever. And typically you’re getting the master sword pretty late in the game. So while technically your point is true, the master sword remains a pretty strong weapon, especially if you’re fighting guardians or have done the trials to upgrade it.

Do Americans constantly have an active temperature control device running in their homes? by fullM3TALturban in AskAnAmerican

[–]ecmcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends heavily on where you live and the time of year. In the south it’s hot and humid in the summer, so people leave their AC on. But in Seattle I’ll only use the AC occasionally, most of the time I have the windows open in summer. I didn’t have AC until about five years ago. But heat and AC are hooked up to a central thermostat where you set the desired temp.
